Just wondering what everybody in our community might think about a RC Halftrack being done by Tamiya or someone else??? I for one would love to add a German Sd.Kfz.251 to my collection.
I have seen others here talk and attempt the project of RCing the 1/18 21st century halftrack ,but never saw if they were able to make it work,...if it was able to work ...what was used and how was it done??.
Just like to know how many others might be interested in a RC Halftrack and if there is enough does anyone know a good way to get a message to Tamiya.?????
Also I guess I couldn't expect a "Full Option" with sound and all ,with the limited space but .....maybe it is possiable???

Been doing a lot of thinking on that myself and was figuring, for a US halftrack like the
M-16 or M-3, building and towing an ammo trailer could carry the battery and the electronics. The motors could be under a "tarp" in the rear of the 1/2 track and a short drive shaft to the tracks. A similar setup could work on the 251 series. Cramped and not much working area, but I believe someone with time and a bit of engineering savvy could get them RC'd up and running. Now, with the M-16, to get the quad 50 mount to traverse and fire with fiberoptics in the barrels,, I'd put out a few $$$ on that.

i gots an idea now. dont know how well it would work but take a 2wd rc truck guts, make a rear drive shaft with locked dif or unlocked dif for the tracks. then make the front actually steer it. use that trailer idea for battery and heck even radio guts! make it looks like a supply trailer with an antenna! it might just work.

sounds like a feasable idea. OK, take a truck frame aready set up fpr RC and put the half track body on it. M-16's always had ammo trailers full of tombstone boxes because you just couldn't supply enought ammo for the 4 hungry ma deuces, and halftracks were alrays towing trailers. Now, find a 1'18 scale truck. Anyone energetic?

hmm ya. 1/2 track from what brand is another question. never seen one in real life to say what would work better. I have a 1:16 team losi mini baja, but that was a 200 dollar truck. would work but im not going to hack it up. has dual 360 motors, a gear box, and is 4wd, has dual steering servos to. its overkill.

anyhow i don't know if a locked or unlocked dif would be best. if its locked then both treads move the same amount, making it more unlikely to hang up or have one tread spin in the air etc. dif lock switch would be nice but makes it more expensive.

I'm not sure what the stock 1/2 track front ends are like. I assume its all molded stiff suspension. I would change that out with springs etc from like tamiya semi trucks. just make a home made spring hangers and spring to a front axle.

also and idea for cables from trailer to truck is the tamiya semi's again. they have a multi cable from truck to trailer. bundles them up nicely. i don't recommend the actual cable though. it would be too light of wires. you would just need 2 or 4 wires for motor(s) + servo wire.

HI Guys Trumpeter are to release a 1/16 static M16 halftrack maybe an R/C version will follow as that is what they did with the T34.

Uh Guys...

Someone actually DOES make an R/C Sd.Kfz. 251, and uses the same method that the German modellers did to make the first R/C ones: used the Academy 1/25 Panther chassis & running gear, and went from there. You can get one for 190 to 200 euro, depending on which model you want.

tried to contact Kinderwelt to check shipping of an RC 251 halftrack and a Sig 33, but the site says they will only ship to Europe. I just sent them a VERY pointed email, in German, requesting clarification or if we need to present our rabies shot papers to order. Waiting for response.

When in doubt...

Ask Willy if he'll ask as a purchasing agent, or if Bob at ETOArmor will do it. I would advise against doing it through TankZone... the price will easily double (compare prices for similar items there and at ETO or BYA.

Maybe BYA would be willing to negotiate a deal and be his North American agent? I might want one of those MAN transporter cabs to go on my Panther 8x8 chassis.

i would have bought it by now, but the fact no-one clearly states shipping to canada cost bugs me. waiting on an email.

also what ratio do you guys think would work better? was thinking of making this my tank hauler mover, but it might be too small to pull a semi trailer w/ dolly.

The conversion is strait forward, I used a motor setup from a 1/18 RC Panz4.

My 1st vehicle is Tamiya compatible combat ready with 4 IR sensors and 2 hit LEDs. It also has firing and hit sound.

Combat circuit is from Tankhobby. Because the vehicle is light armor no TBU was used. The 4 IR sensors were installed so that all 4 sides were covered.

Vehicle takes 2 hits to knock out and 5 seconds between gun firings. Upgrade includes gun azmith of +- 20 deg by Rc.

Vehicle #2 is nearing completion, upgrades track installation and gun azmith.

They used Prime Movers for big jobs, like tank recovery and hauling large artillery. I think a hanomag would have a heart attack if it tried to pull a tank

i guess my tank hauler gets put on the shelf a little longer. was thinking a tamiya 1/14th semi, but the scale is probably way off.
