Default IR version T34 to HL saga

As part of the quest to make the WSN T34 more "user friendly" I decided to take the plunge and convert the internals of what is a brand new tank, into a HL S&S machine. Doing this should give me a much better control using HL circuitry. Unfortunately this also means that the Infra Red "battle" circuitry has to be lost. Seeing as how I only have the one WSN tank anyway, and that this IR system is solely WSN specific, removal was not going to be a great loss.
Following the advice of Wackywheels and using his excellent schematics, I took the plunge and "gutted" the internals, removing the battery box with a bit of "dremelling". I did try the cotton-cutting method at one point then realised that I was cutting stuff I shouldn't when I was on the "blind side", so the dremel was used!! I then glued the battery cover over the hole, and will eventually get around to filling the seams / holes. The board / cables had already been removed, (unfortunately I made the bad mistake of cutting the cables thinking that it would be easier to re-wire the new boards...bad move!!) so I decided to fit the main board to one of the original pillars using the other pillars as supports (they didn't align with the holes anyway). The small board was also attached using one of the pre-drilled support holes on the tank base. Both boards seem nice and firm, so I'm quite happy with this for now.

Then came the wiring!!

The original motor wires had small plugs which were a brilliant fit ....for the smoker and sound sockets!!, but alas, off they came, as the wires needed to be attached to the S&S boards with solder. The speaker was attached with some double-sided sticky pads to the tank base, then plugged into the board. Both boards were then connected and the task of sorting the wiring started. Thanks to Wackywheels pictures, this was made fairly easily, although wacky's tank was a non-IR version, and his tank wires were a different colour, but his labelling certainly made it easier to locate the wires when you knew where they were coming from. So with a bit of patience, the wires were sourced and connected, with at least one exception...a black wire.....mmmmmm now where does this go??????

Lots of face pulling (not enough hair to pull anyway) and grunting later, still no clue!! OK, leave this one for now, but hang on, what about the other ten or so thin wires that are not connected???? Ha!! the IR stuff, Oh dear, there are a few of 'em arn't there???? Errr.... now what do I do???

fv432 to the rescue..."Rip 'em out" he cries....."What??? says I, "Sell 'em on the 'bay" says he...."Good idea"!!
So, last night, one by one, off they came, and as I took them out, I collated a schematic so fellow tankers would benefit, I hope, and someone out there might find this little lot useful.
I'll add the schematic for now (I hope) and continue the T34 saga anon.

Bye for now fellow tankers

The schematic:

Please note that this was my machine, and if the manufacturer is anything like HL, the wiring colours MAY be different!!

I've not done anything like this before, so please excuse my deficiencies.

Turret circuit board:
Connections as follows:

Connections:
1A – Thin Black - To middle 2 x connections (wired together) on turret top IR sensor
2B – Thin Green - To front left leg of turret top IR sensor (this then goes via a green cable to rear right leg of IR sensor)
3C – Thick Yellow - To front right leg of turret top IR sensor (then this goes via yellow cable to rear left leg of IR sensor)
4D – Thin White - To cannon end flash / IR emitter (??)
5E – Thick White - To microswitch on cannon body (returns via black cable to ?)
6F – 2 x Thin Black - To black wires on the 2 x r/h side turret “hit†bulbs
7G – Thin White - To cannon warning LED on turret roof
8H – 2 x Thin Red - To red wires on the 2 x r/h side turret “hit†bulbs
9I – Thick White - To 2 x thin black wires for the “hit†bulbs in the commander’s cupola
10J – Via a resistor (grey) - to red wire to cannon warning LED on turret roof, then via 2 x red wires for the “hit†bulbs in the commanders cupola.
K - Thin orange - goes to cannon end flash / IR??
L – Red - goes to red side of the 2 x turret “hit†bulbs
M – White - goes to black side of the 2 x turret “hit†bulbs

N – Red - goes to elevation motor terminal (marked as "2" on that diagram)

Ok guys, how was that? any use do you reckon?
Hopefully they can be of "some" use to someone.
This is the tank as it was:

Edit: Sorry about the grainy pics (wife's camera was the only one available at the time, and I don't know how to use it...please don't tell her I'll never live it down)

Hey steady on Tim, us firefighters have a reputation I know but....(I only kiss on the second date!!)

Glad to know this is useful. PLEASE have a really good look at Wackywheels excellent S&S conversion overview for the main tank board change. I could not have done any of this without that guide it is superb. The only difference is that you'll have to have a good look at the wiring colours from the main components (recoil motor, elevation motor, turret traverse, turret elevation), and then follow them to suss out what wires need to go to the S&S boards, as they are different colours to those on Wacky's machine. OK?

Good luck with the change, and if you can suss out the connections for the recoil / cannon sound / tank recoil....please let me know!!

Cheers
Tanx

Tim

Not sure if this will help, but, here are my connections for the connector from HL electrics to the T34, using Wackywheels guide for the first 5x connections:

Edit: THAT DIDN'T WORK, LET ME THINK ABOUT THIS.....

Yep...the cannon has now lost the end "flash" (only since removal of the IR system), the cannon recoil ONLY works with the Tx left stick UP (not synchronised with the tank recoil / cannon sound).
I've deliberately disabled the very annoying mg firing that accompanied the cannon elevation, but need to somehow connect this to the main mg to fire simultaneously.

If I recall correctly (I'm losing it!!) the black wire was connected to the microswitch alongside the cannon....but not sure. Sorry. Need to have yet another mooch inside the turret, trouble is that each time one of the plastic hand-holds / attachments gets broken-off when I do this, they are so flimsy, but hey, not to worry, they will be replaced with wire versions!!

Oh and one final thing...the button / wires that morph this into the Tamiya Leo 2A6 seems to be missing. I'm sure I ordered it when I bought this....!!!

the black wire is to switch the cannon flash L.E.D on/off
didn't you install the "transform"/"morph" button on the warp drive plate like i said

..the warp plate drive..oh no, that was the first part I pulled on the IR change. OK guys forget all that stuff above, its going back in!! LOL!!

Fv OK, so the black wire connects to what on the S&S board connector, please?

you need to find the airsoft firing warning L.E.D that is linked into the BB motor
try this link for wiring the cannon L.E.D to the main board using the "k" button but it wont fire the cannon recoil on the T34 just noise ,flash and track recoil heres the link http://www.dougstigerparts.com/led_cannon_flash.htm
going to investigate further how to do it using the BB motor up stick only as i did sort it on my tiger gun upgrade (forgot to take a photo ME BAD) and it works a treat

fv: going to try that tomorrow, looks good

I've also been looking at the wiring diagram and putting a few more of the main wires on, you know; lights, etc. So have a look. I've even added the big black wire from the cannon recoil microswitch!! [X(]

That latest wiring diagram, is it the original or the HL S&S???

don't worry tim i'm as confused as everyone else[][][]
not sure at the diagram i'm thinking it's the wsn with I/R less the Heng long bits[]
(If that makes sense)

Sorry Guys trying to be too clever there!!

Right, the last schematic includes the wiring needed for the T34 headlight and hull mg to operate. This uses the HL electronics via the connector block. If you follow the advice from Wackywheels thread, he uses a cheap multi connector strip to mate the HL wiring loom with the WSN cabling headed for the turret. In the UK we sometimes know these connectors as "chocolate blocks" because of their similarities to a bar of chocolate, but basically they are just lots of screw terminals in a long strip.

I've shown the wires FROM the HL loom coming in on the l/h side of the connector block. All the wiring on the right hand side is WSN stock colouring as per my machine. The only wire I have a problem with is the thick black wire which sets off from the cannon mounted microswitch. I have routed this to the connector purely because with my limited electronic ability, I don't know where it SHOULD connect. I assume it has something to do with the cannon flash, but as to where it would need to be attached ........
So, in a nutshell, other than the wires entering the connector from the left side, this is all WSN turret wiring. I omitted the wiring inside the hull because Wackywheels had done a far better job on his thread than I ever could.

By the way, this IS a WSN machine, (it says so about ten times on the box and transmitter!!)

One final update guys:
Missed-off a wire!! On the Recoil motor at the green wire connection, there is also another blue wire attached. Now I somehow missed this and I "think" it went to the mg alongside the cannon on the mantle to the thin black wire, but unfortunately this wire has snapped-off in all the moving around, so cannot be 100% sure on this.
I was hoping to double-up the wiring for this mg so it fired with the main mg, but once again one of the LED legs have snapped off at the LED base, so the cables are useless, oh well never mind.

Tanxalot,

For your mystery blue wire, I have a thin red wire and thin black wire with a resistor on it running off my turret MG. There are 3 wires coming from the cannon, thin red, thin white, and a thin black to thick blue. (Not sure if this helps you)

Ok, I have followed your wiring diagrams and:

-gutted the main board
-removed the existing IR system (although I have not been able to find the IR emitter, is it in the cannon????)
-prepared the turret wiring for a new wiring block.
-wired the turret MG to the Hull MG.
-Removed the battery compartment and glued the battery hatch on.
-Removed volume switch and RC Crystal hatch that was glued shut (***!)
-Put filler in all the holes left in the underside.

Question:
I am mounting an RX-13 board inside the T-34. What colours are the positive and negative wires running off the motors?
