The volume knob can and does go bad, but if I read it right you changed that also?

HHmm that is a strange one mine just started working all by itself but it did work very quietly on max volume

have you tried the volume switch ??
and the two strips that sit in the middle of the board in an "L" shape and gave them a good "wiggle"?? Circled in yellow in the Pic

The wiper contact thingy (shiny) on the little volume board can bend outwards and loose contact, check the 3 wires going from the function (big) board to the mini volume board, push the wiper and see if you get a noise. Also, have you at any stage mistakenly plugged the speaker in to DP2 (Smoker socket)? If so, the speaker may of been damaged but rest assured another will be easy to come by.

If you're unsure on the speaker, find another small speaker to test, or quickly hook a small battery to the speaker and if it "thumps" (moves) if it does it should be fine to make noise.

cheers for replies guys....
blitz..don't think its the volume knob as its a new one and have got a noise from speaker...
rob..tried wiggling those boards about and apart from one single burst of noise as i picked up board can't get anything...
wacky..it would be entirely possible for me to connect speaker to smoker socket but i know i haven,t (this time)..! tried the speaker on a battery and got a noise and also had the one single noise from speaker so that should be ok..not sure what the wiper thingy is..? is it the black shiney blob on back of cards..? tried the 3 wire data cable and have had a general poke/prod/wriggle about of things but nada...![:@]
starting to think its the replacement board i put in which will now probably be replaced with another replacement..!![:@][:@]
they've about doubled in price too since last i had to buy one..?!
cheers, rgds stuart

just an update guys...all sorted..
after having ordered a new board, got fed up waiting for it to arrive and was looking closely at board for the 10th time and noticed the big grey resistor(?) wasn't quite making contact with the board..? so one blob of solder later, full sound..!!! not bad for a £20 "faulty" bulldog from the fleabay..!!!
and tomorrow morning i will be one 4 year olds hero..!!! priceless..
cheers guys, rgds stuart

Excellent. That big resistor sticks up a far bit and no doubt sitting in their factory stock it could get caught on other boards and become loose. I have heard of two other cases where one end of the grey resistor comes unsoldered/dry joint, but these were upgrade (non-factory installed) boards installed by electronics amateurs. Nevermind, an easy fix - glad you're back in business!!
