Default Beginner's Guides

Hi,

im very new to this hobby, and haven't built anything RC before.

Im wondering if anyone knows of any websites or books that are good for a newbie to get the hang of the electronics for these tanks, and how to change from HL to another RC set.

Cheers for any help,
Rik

Using the search engine and asking questions here will yield you the best information possible on the subject. Sometimes I think this is an HL only board. Welcome to the hobby, hope you find what you are looking for.

Thank you pcsguy88.

Im just starting, but i've bought a Pershing and a Tiger. The tiger is the one I really want to rebuild. The pershing will be mostly a paint job once the Tiger is finished.

The painting im fine with, electronics can confuse me sometimes, lol.

Mainly I want to know is it worth replacing the HL boards with someting else, such as El Mod, and if so, does anyone have a guide to doing that?

Cheers,
Rik

Just jump in and do it! When you get stuck, ask questions. See my signature!

As for El Mod, why their site has instructions for you to download for each component. However, they are made to work with HL or with aftermarket ESCs. See my Tiger build for wiring diagrams and info on El Mod.

Welcome to the "collectors union". You'll find that 2 is really not sufficient when you get to running them around. Also you will note that there are a number of corections to be made on both tanks is you want to have them authentic and add/dfelete things that the maker didn't think about. Good luck

Thank you for all your advice.

Swathdiver, I have been reading your build thread, and I love the work your doing, it looks awesome!

If I was to get rid of the Hl electronics and go for a full prop El Mod, what would you recommend I need ESC and controller-wise?

Patton commander, im very sure i'll buy more, as money permits!

This may seem like a silly question, but what are ESC's? And where can I get replacements?

I was told a 6 channel Tx is good for El Mod, I saw this one on the famous auction site;

[link=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Futaba-6EX-2-4-GHz-6-Channel-Radio-Set_W0QQitemZ270281233511QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item2 70281233511&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2% 7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14]Link[/link]

Would this be good for elmod?

Can I still use a proportional smoke generator with this?

Also, would I be able to say use one of the switches on the top for ignition?, and one for the MG?

Cheers

Rik

Hi Rik,

Welcome to our addiction!

PM blitzkrieg65 for El-Mod questions (he's the US dealer for El-Mod and a really helpfull guy).
His website (www.rctankwars.com) recommends the Futaba 7C (next model up from the 6EX) for guaranteed El-Mod compatbility.

If you want to keep the smoker, then you might want to consider his RC2HL kit, which interfaces between a regular receiver module and the HL motor control board (and also adds a bunch of other stuff like IR combat capability)
Its still limited to the performance of the HL board (ie 5 speeds rather than fully proportional), but its alot cheaper than El-Mod if you want to go all out and have the sounds and IR capability.
The Futaba 6EX would be fine with that system, you may even get away with the Spektrum DX5e (which is much cheaper, at least here in the US) - but I haven't tested that as yet.

Martin

PS. a friendly word of advice: posting Ebay links upsets the mods here...

Thank you Ex Pat.

The 7C is a bit out of my price range, im going to ask if the 6EX is compatible.

Im not fussed about IR, im going to get one of Creepingdeaths turrets, but I would like to keep the smoker.

Ideally, id like to ditch all the HL electronics, and go for the more robust El-Mod stuff, just for reliability, and for the much better features.

Don't be in a hurry to lose the HL electronics. They are easy to use and they work well. The El Mod stuff and Darkith stuff interfaces with them fine. Biggest drawback is that they are limited to 6 channels, but I understand that Heng long is addressing that, with other frequencies in the future. Darkith sells a Battle module that interfaces between HL electronics and a standard radio to open up the spectrum of channels.

You can even have both I.R.battles or BB battles if you do it right you dont have to sacrfice one for the other you can have a detachble I.R.system and still keep the BB working the only thing you wont have is muzzle flash in the end of your barrel but there again you could make it detachable.so dont jump all in one direction I.R. battles are great fun and nothing gets damaged you start blasting away at another tank with a creeping death gun and your going to start knocking bits of or even knocking holes in someones pride and joy and they wont be happy.
