Desert Leo
Recently I Bought a second hand leo for ard SGD$200 from someone whom wants to give up on RC tanking, as a lot of parts were missing, I bought a static kit for SGD$540, so in all I spend ard SGD$900 on the tank including a few metal upgrade parts. As I did not want to paint it the same nato scheme as everyone, I decided to paint it desert scheme.
I have yet to weather the tank as I am unsure how to proceed. I would just liketo share what it looks like now.

RE: Desert Leo
Planedev,
That looks really good in a desert scheme. First one I have seen, like you said everyone usually does the Leo in the NATO three-colored camo. Yours should stand out quite nicely. Can't wait to see how it looks once you add some weathering. Please post pics of your progres.
Nice job so far!

RE: Desert Leo
Just a few more pics of the tank to show the various details.
Btw I used a rare earth magnet on the bottom of the rotating light and a piece of metal similar to the one at the access hatch, glued under the top turretto allow it to attach anywhere are the turret top. I wanted to do that as teh real one was movable too
Also thanks to all for the nice comments.

RE: Desert Leo
The Canadians are using Leo2s in Afghanistan at the moment. They started life with the standard NATO camo however what they did is paint out only the green with a sand yellow colour leaving the red brown and black still there. It is a good look and would be authentic too.
In winter the standard procedure is to paint the green out with white.
You could do that and have your tank look exactly right and at the same time different as the other Leo2. I wish I had done my one like that as lighter colours make the weathering stand out more.

RE: Desert Leo
How about this one, its Danish. Its not the Nato 3 color, but its a more interesting desert scheme than just sand color. However that is still a beautiful Leo you got there.

Dear Planedev,
Very nice! your work reminds me of my friend's Leo (his name is Ronz Sarvis known here at RCU as CAV SCOUT...
Heres his work...
I also wanted to buy a tamiya Leo and would want to do the Leo 2 PSO version (Peace support operation)
see the last picture..
Keep tanking

RE: Desert Leo
Nice desert leo caragan, I think my desert colour was a bit too dark as I used tamiya desert yellow, the one you showed is a nicer colour, I think it is tamiya deck tan.
sir francis, that is a very nice danish leo with a nice desert scheme. I wished someone would make a conversion kit as teh danish leo is a lot nicer than the original.

RE: Desert Leo
Your tamiya yellow has a pretty good tone. Just a bit clearer in this picture but not too much different depending on lights.
I prefer it to mimetic danish leo. Look at this sort of gillie suit.

Hey Caragan!! how ya been? happened to drop by the forum tonight and saw there's a desert camo LEO post...just had to see it...Outstanding work there "Planedev"!!
I thought about converting to a PSO version...did some research last year but it's probably going to be late 2011 before i start that project...got a lot of WWII stuff going right now. The way my mind changes on models though, who knows.
Planedev, the color i used (at least the yellow-ist color) is PS "U.S. Desert Armor; Marine/Army"...or something close to that name. i washed the desert armor color on over Krylon Sand Stone. Don't really matter though, yours looks great; no way to really tell about the hues/shades/tone-weight of a color other than to see it in person, and then it depends on the light source (how it's gonna look to ya). I'm no color expert but I was a color mixer for a while. i got "perfect" color discrepancy they told me (LoL); in that i can line up all the colors in the spectrum from one end to the other as they gradually change in hues/tones...yeah, i always passed the test without error and could remake a color that was nearly the same, but never really the same, cause the color drifts with each remake, the shading room is some how different (more/fewer people in it or a stack of papers in the right place to change the lighting) and of course the light bulbs ain't the same age the next time the color is shaded against the standard, so it comes out a tad bit different. can't go off memory, gotta go off what you see. You won't be able to perfectly match the colors from the photos, at best, they will only give you a "point of departure", a place from which to start...in the end though, you will most likelly use a color that "feels" right (your gut)..after all it's your model and you have license to do what you want. No two tanks in the same unit at the same time look the same color, they only appear to be the same. things weather diffently...too many variables...perfect match, can't be done (LoL). attached some photos of the same model... different camera, different lights, different backdrop, different room.
great work, can't wait to see your progress. now i gotta check out all these other posts...lots of great work going on in RCU.

RE: Desert Leo
Wow, I am simply amazed by the level of the paint work done on your leo, I really like all the dtail you have in there. I hope that my leo can look half like that, prolly send it to a paint expert friend of mine to do the chipping and weathering if I botch it myself. Also love the invasion markings on it, what colour you recommend for those? flat black?

RE: Desert Leo
hey check this out..i don't chip paint like that anymore...i did it all wrong...there's a panther in this forum that's got the ticket on chipping. i'll have to look up the author, the thread is "Panther Rebuild", i think. try doing the chipping yourself...i botched his one, it's over done and not a lot of thought put into the chipping at the time, other than where i knew there would be chipping, the rest is just random. thanks for the complements but i got things to learn yet. seriously though, you've layed your paint on very good and it'd be quite enjoyable to weather your own tank. you can apply washes, drybrush, post shade and even go back and use salt or rubber cement chipping techniques where you want. this is just brushing on some water and then sprinkling/arranging salt then when the salt is stuck to the model, just paint over it and then brush the satl away to remove the paint (of course you would have to paint a darker under color to reveal the chipping. the rubber cement can be applied with a tooth pick and then painted over then rubbed away to remove the paint. you could use a darkened metalic color and a fine detail brush to apply the chipping effect to your already painted tank. i read all these on this and other forums, in Fine Scale Modeler or either other modelers have told me how. oh yeah, and in a book by Sheperd Paine.

Nice to see more Leo's being modeled, a much under rated model. You guys really show the Leo well with your paint and weathering techniques.
The Leo may be the last heavy fighter for quite some time so keep a hold of your models!

RE: Desert Leo
Our club has 6 leos, 4 of which are nato colours and 1 is a custom camo scheme and the last is my desert leo. Another member is contemplating a leo too. I think the problem with teh leo is that there is no counterpart for it to battle thus not many battlers get it. Most leos I know are bought by collectors than RCers.
Hope tamiya comes out with more modern armour then.

Hi there my friend CAV Scout (A.K.A Ronz), glad to hear from you! how are you? Hows the family?
Hope everythings A-OK! I wish to know more about your latest projects, I know those will be amazing tanks
keep it up my friend!
Planedev's Leo reminded me of yours!
Its nice to see some amazing unique Leopards out there, As Planedev mentioned I hope there would be some serious
modern battle tank to play the leo with.
What happen to Hooben's 1/16 T55? I was hoping that would be a nice tank to play against the Leo.
Does anybody know what the latest about this tank?
Patrick C.

Patrick:
The thread got buried, but latest comment in mid Jan said its been delayed to late April. I'm gonna be watching for it as well - t want my 'Beast' (sorry, T5447)
D*mm*t, now I gotta get antibiotics for a re-infected right lung (again, gonna be chronic after the april '07 post-op acid regurg & pneumo) I can't wait for the TPN so that my weight and health can bounce back up... Being too tired to work safely on my R/C's is a pain!
