Default Prime Plastic?

I have purchased a can of Tremclad primer for my metal parts, but do I need to prime plastic parts as well prior to painting? Are there other choices available from hardware stores for plastic (instead of Tamiya products)?

Thanks again!

I use KRYLON for just about everything. Tamiya primers are nice but I always find myself out of it when I need it and the local stores around here carry KRYLON and it works on plastic, metal, wood and glass.
