Don't remember the exact setting, but you need to configure the switches on the DMD/MFU into "test" mode.
(Check the manual, but can't find it. Must be in the instructions that come with the TBU)
Be sure to reset the tank back to the proper Light/Med/Heavy setting when done.

To answer that question best, use a white (color) reflective type surface like an art board for signs or a white wall with a gloss finish. When I first started out, that's what I used to test mine and, in a small room you can actually bounce shots off the wall onto unsuspecting enemy.

I've done that, test fine but have not been able to do it in real mode. With white wall or mirror I can't get it to respond..

You can't hit yourself in "normal" mode...it would cause too many false hits whenever you were battling near any objects (the IR LED has a somewhat wide spread). The CPU just ignores any incoming signals until you finish firing.

The reason why you can only shoot yourself in test mode is becoz, in normal battle mode, when you fire your IR(main gun) the MFU "turns off" your receiver at the same time so you do not shoot yourself. That is also the reason why sometimes when 2 tanks fire at each other at the same time, neither gets hit, though sometimes 1 tank does get hit due to the slight difference in the timing of the 2 shots.
