Default How good are Impact Metal Tracks

Can any one tell me how good/bad are Impact metal tracks ? Are they just for Tamiya or will they fit Heng Long as well ?

Is it difficult to remove the pins to split the tracks with this brand and are they worth the money ?

I use impact metal tracks on my Tamiya King Tiger, and they are fantastic. Brilliant quality and finish. I can't tell how the will work together with a stock King Tiger since I got the metal tracks when I had plenty of upgrades installed.

Looks, sounds and preforms very good. If you are into scale and realism you will not be disapointed with the metal tracks, adds alot of wheight to the tank and you get a compleatly different hang on the tracks.

I have never regret the purchase so far, and I guess I never will

I have many tanks with Impact, Kenny Kong and Mato metal tracks. Impact are very good for detail, but miserable to take apart. The pins are press fit into a blind hole, meaning you must drill out the other end of the track link, and then drive out the pin. Kenny Kong's are much easier to disassemble and about the same price.

Mato's are ok, but made of substandard metal. You'll end up replacing about 5% of the track due to the metal falling apart. Then again...they are cheap. Did I say they are cheap?

For the money, I think Kenny Kongs are the top of the heap right now but only because you can replace links easily.

Drill out the end of the link?????!!

I have Impact tracks on my Tiger and Sherman. I use a small pair of wire cutters to grab just under the pin head and edge them out. No cutting or drilling here!

Thanks for your posts on this, but the fact that there is an issue on removing the pin/ splitting the links has put me right off. When you consider the price, the pins should be able to be removed easily and yet when inserted remain securely in place.

There is no problem with removing the pins read the post from UnionPac above.

I have them on my panther and they are fantastic, the only problem I have is that occassionally a pin comes loose and has to be threadlocked back into position.

For the price the Asiatam metal tracks are also very good.

Cheers

Alan.

They can be removed easily!

The first pic is of the blind side. The second shows the pin head with the pliers I use to remove them.

Why in the world would one post put you off??

Thanks for the pics, It wasn't just this one post that put me off. I spoke to an Impact supplier and he said the Tracks are top quality, he uses them himself, but he told me the pins were difficult to remove. so much so that on his KT, he removes the drive sprocket to get the tracks off. Rather than rush in and pay a lot of money, I want to make sure they are right for me. Your pictures have given me a change of thought though.

Thanks.

Shoot I remove the drive sprocket even on plastic tracks its easier the only time you should need to remove pin is a link is bad or you need to add a link or remove one unless you want to paint your tracks some do .

thanks

Some of these tanks have resin 'center caps' and removing the sprocket each time isn't a great idea for they will break.

I have them on 3 Kings, early and late, 2 Tiger 1's, 2 (soon 3) Panthers, a Sherman, a P3, and the JT. Only time I ever pull a pin is when I have to adjust length for initial installation, as on the JT where they have to be lengthened. They all work grand. Only problem I ever had was this past weekend. Had a guest's child, 10 year old lad, running one of the Kings outside in the drizzle, as they were too noisey for inside and the baby that was visiting also. Left him alone for 10 minutes, and returned to find the King immobile, tracks jammed solid with the local acc type mud. After cleaning about 2 kilos, literally, of mud off the tank to get the tracks off, I found that the final drive shaft gear and his mating HPC steel gear had eaten each other on one side. Have a pic or two. This is what NOT to do. I have spare parts, so the damage is repaired. This set of TU's has seen action for years, first Danville and Jax, and then here. Ate stones and rocks with not a problem. Tracks, by the way, were not damaged at all. Cleaned them up, and off the King went. However, if this mud here ate THAT transmission, I can guaranty you that stock or other aftermarkent transmissions would not last 2 minutes in it. Lesson learned. Don't run them in the local soup, and don't leave a young lad unsupervised in same. Wasn't his fault, and he will never know of the damage.
