Hi Tomas,

In honor of another brilliant Texas rc tank, seemly, close to being added to your collection, I have created a Jagdtiger commander figure kinda based upon your mug. In response to your last email, perhaps now, you'll retire your goose stepping brown shirts and that kraut uniform rc play suit, 'cause now you'll have a 1/16 scale "Kraut Tomas" that you can just drive around the battlefield with and also be able to dress more comfortably during that mid-day Texas heat.

Again, very cool tank and please email me your mailing address and I will get little Tomas right off to you.

Kindest Regards, John

My, that's a pretty kitty. After seeing Bob's (sevoblast) up close while in Jacksonville, I'd say you won't have much competition as long as the enemy is towards your front.

Thomas, if vco and I ever get back to the States, I'll bring mine down to one of your meets. Two JT's will be pretty much omnipotent. At Danville, we used to fight in 4 man teams. With the JT, it was allowed 3 tanks, the JT and two support Tigers. JT had IFA. Here's what Chuck saw in Jax. JT is in the midst of a ground up overhaul and rebuild, but he will be painted very dark again when finished. Vco and a lot of the locals call it "menacing", so dark it is.

Say Bob im still new to the battle tanks is the apple on the back of the JT because no other tank could get past its frontal armor it could only be taken out from the rear .

thanks

Yes, Jimmy. The Jagdtiger has Invulnerable Front Armor. or IFA. The front 90 degrees, 45 degrees each side off centre, is blocked on the apple. I moved the apple from the commanders hatch to the rear deck about a year after I built him. The repositioned apple worked well and gave no additional advantage with the position on the rear deck. Care was taken to make very sure he could be hit from the remaining 270 degrees.
There is a way to kill him, but for OPSEC I will not tell how. After all, once you learn the trick, it makes things much easier for the opposition to do so. Still and all, like the real one, he is a formidable fighter.
When we battle here, all tanks are set for "light", 3 hits and you are dead. Exception is the KT, Tiger 1, and Pershing, which are set for medium, 5 hits to kill. JT is the only one set for heavy. Tamiya KV when he arrives will probably be changed somewhat, and will also be set to medium.

Nice JT Tomas. It turned out quite nice. Congratulations! JT's are a nice ride. I've been battling mine for over a year now, and it is a rare day when it is destroyed. I believe its only happened once or twice over the course of 10 or so battledays.

Very nice JT there. I do like these and that is one of the nicest I have seen.

Is the trick to beat these not attack with a pincer movement with two or more tanks with an attacking angle between the two and the JT of about 60 degrees? The JT has to turn to take on an opponenet and you then expose your rear to the other tank(s) in the pincer movement.... Not wanting to give the game away but that is how I would tackle the JT with my Pershing and a mate with his. During WWII they would pit several Shemans against the bigger (JT, KT) tanks in a simlar manner with 5 or 6 to 1 odds. You may lose some but in the end you would get the big kitty

cheers

Thanks, gorehound. Thomas' in my opinion looks better. Mine at the moment is undergoing a ground up resto and update.
In actuality, the History Channel scenerio is somewhat incorrect, as is a lot of their episodes from what I have read and been told by vets. My father was a Master Sergeant in the 101 Airborne, dropped on D Day, fought in Market Garden and Bastogne. We only really talked twice, and that after considerable amounts of hops based fluids loosened our tongues, He had a big problem with his sons making the military a career.
Anyhow, his only comments on Tigers was that when his unit heard them start in the dawn the drill was to withdraw, let the Tigers come in and shoot up what they wanted, and then when they got low on fuel or ammo or it was beer and wurst time they would go home, and the unit would then go forward again. However, when he heard the enertia starter of one of my Tigers in Jax some years ago, the colour drained out of his face and he asked me to turn it off, which I did, so I think there was more to the story than he said. However, he passed on some 6 years ago. I strongly regret not getting along with him and talking more about his experiences, not only in the war but of life in general in his time. That knowledge is gone now.
Tanks rarely fight alone. A pincer movement as shown on History Channel would set you up for a tangle with the other 2 or 3 tanks in support of the JT and /or the supporting infantry unit. JT was a good defensive weapon, as are most hunters. Also, the Tigers in general were not the ponderous monsters Allied propaganda made them out to be. Read up on what the crews themselves said about them, and what the Allied tankers said about them. A good read also is "Death Traps", of which a friend just sent me a copy to read. Excellent book about the repair echelon, something rarely covered in books.
One of the things the old man mentioned was he had on more than one occasion seen Sherman commanders refuse to go out and tangle with the Tigers, even with overwhelming numbers, if there was no air and arty support. He said he saw on one occasion, and I don't remember where it was, 8 Shermans go out looking for them, and only one came back, and he was a shot up wreck that did not burn only by the Grace of God. True? I don't know as I was not there. However, the old man was not a nervous wreck of a man who was traumatized by the war. He was a quite successful business man who rarely lost his temper, and I don't remember him ever telling me a lie.
As stated, there is a way to kill the JT in our combat system, but those of us who have them will not divulge the secrets. Otherwise, we are eventually dead. Just read Jeff O's post. He has not died often, nor have I at Danville. In actuality the only time I died at Dville with the JT was when I made a mistake...twice if memory serves.
So, if you see one on the IR battlefield, I would say give him a pretty wide berth, and a small prayer may well be in order also.

Hi

An interesting last post and I can appreciate the effect the sound had as it is exactly as the real Tiger sounds - see link below

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCsS20WJfBI[/link]

I am glad the Tamiya one requires somewhat less effort though

I would love to take the JT on with some Pershings to see but unfortunately the Atlantic Ocean is in the way. We do not get much in the way of these battles where I live but one day I plan to go to an event somewhere in the UK, perhaps Bovington as I believe they do them there sometimes.

Does anybody know if the rumours on an HL Jagtiger are true or is it just wishful thinking. I would like to get one and mate it up to the Tam lower half as it would be more economical than converting the Tam one using the conversion kits available. I would hate to go ahead and start on the Jagd only to find out the HL one appears as soon as I get going.

cheers

It's too bad Imperial Models didn't offer an affordable Jagdtiger like they did their Sturmtiger.

Maybe they know something we don't.

Well, actually the ocean is not between us, but most of Europe is. I am TDY for the time being in Sevastopol. However, if you ever get East, let me know. It's an interesting place in it's own right, but don't come to most of the former SSSR without either being on a good guided tour or a having a good friend to take care of you. There is no tourist infrastructure here to help you, and I have yet to meet a local cop who a. spoke any English and b. was interested in anything but how to enhance the weight of his wallet.

Yes, the Tam is exactly the sound of the real thing. Not as long a wind up, but the sound is there, enough to put the memory back in my father.
Would be nice if someone else did come up with a JT. Mine was scratch built, finished about a month before the first viable and pretty correct, but as you said expensive, kit came on market. I used a barrel and mantlet that was not correct, but it was the only game in town.

Panther: Dunno if they know something, but I would think with the longer hull needed and the excessive detail on the cabin it would not be a simple and cheap kit. I know the Wecohe kit is pretty exacting, for as you know that is what I am using in the overhaul, mainly for increased accuracy of the model.

thanks Bob nice read .

My Grandfather served in one of Pattons divisions growing up in the 70's at his house some times he would talk about ww2 and what he did but only once or twice my mother told me about a story he told her as a kid on how he got a watch off a German female he had to kill before she shoot him with a pistol he gave the watch to my mother she still has it but like your dad he did not talk much about the war unless he had a few drinks in him and then very little he died in the early 80's .

Thanks

Sorry to hear he is gone, Jimmy. Normally vets who have "been there and done that" don't speak much about it, especially to those who have not experienced it. Here, there is very much more respect for the military than in USA, but still, they don't often speak of it. I know quite a few vets of Afghan, and when we get together over some vodka, then yes sometimes we will speak, but only if the women are not in the room. They don't need to hear of it.
As stated, I very much regret not talking more to my father, both for information on the war and how life was in general when he was growing up in the '20's and '30's. So many of the vets are gone now, and with them their memories and information. Here, on the 09 May Victory Day celebrations and parades, even I can see a marked difference in the number of vets from the Great Patriotic War from the last 3 years. Sad, but they are all quite old now.

Well, today was the day.... it was muddy, but cool.... so we held our battleday under the covered pavillion adjacent to our battlefield...

Here is the finished product... again, thanks to MOONSHADOW for assembling, scratching and detail/painting of this incredible model!
and also special thanks to those of you who emailed me photos of your JT's installations...

It was a "HIT" at the battleday... went undefeated as you all had mentioned it should/would...
just made sure to keep "support" tanks to my back side and I kept the opposition in front of me,,,never let them get my tail...
This thing is massive and different to drive/operate since you cannot just "fit" in places like a Tiger1 or PzIV...

OVERALL I am very happy with this SUPERHEAVYTANK... looking forward to adding kill rings to my barrel!!!!!

Gorehound,

The UK club has a weekend battle meeting schedualed for August 15th/16th down in deepest, darkest Devon -If I can make itfrom all the way over from Detroit (via Pete-bog-horror)with 2 (hopefully 3!) tanks then you have no excuse not to attend!!
Any more UK tankers up for a battle???

I know our efforts will be poor vs Texas Armour's battlefield, but we have to start somewhere...

Mart

P.S. Tomas, If I manage to hang on to my job long enough, Iwill be looking for food and lodging down your way next year - you battlefield is way to tempting not to make the trip!!!
