Great work Tomas, she is looking good! Thanks for the detailed assembly instructions and photos. Keep it coming!

John - It is good to hear your considering the subject of this thread to be your Tiger's new playmate. We also can agree to disagree, taunt each other, yet still remain diplomatic enough to cohabit this forum and our little battlefields without hating and literally trying to kill each other. Maybe countries will even be able to do that some day too.. Maybe they could even have RC tank battles to settle their disagreements , instead of real ones.

We can be friends, but where our little battles are concerned I don't think it would be appropriate for us to sign a German-Soviet non-aggression pact.. That would most likely lead to us painting flowers and peace signs on our tanks, and well, I think our little skirmishes would get kind of boring then.[sm=confused_smile.gif]

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program of KV Heavy Tank Assembly at TX Armor Tank Factory!

pcomm1,

I raise my vodka glass to you and say

"Death to the Fascists Pigs"

pcomm1, in all seriousness I am enjoying the discussion. I am relatively new to the hobby, and want to get into battling, alas both my HL's are bone stock. One has an airsoft and the other has an HL battle system. I need to convert to a Tamiya compatible system. Also need to find some RC tankers conveniently located in my area of the foothills east of Sacramento CA. To take on your Tiger I will also need to convert a KV-1 into a KV-85.

Ciao

Default RE: TAMIYA KV-1 - TX ARMOR ONLINE ASSEMBLY

Monday July 13th was a GREAT DAY AT THE TEXAS ARMOR ARMORY/ KV-1 PRODUCTION FACTORY!

We laid out all the components for the electronics.

Connect and set up the DMD, MF UNIT and receiver...
First find the stranded communication cable and uncover the dmd/mf unit connection points, then install the cable.
Using some double sided mounting tape mount the DMD/MF UNIT as shown in the manual.
Then using the included "Y HARNESS" connect the leads of the MF/DMD UNITS together.
Follow the manual and lay out the route for the wiring where it is to go between the speaker box and the hull sides, this goes for the on/off switch as well. Connect up the 4 wires that go to power the electric motors.
Fit and install the speaker box.
Grab a charged battery pack, along with the receiver you are going to install,
Follow the included labels to connect the leads from the DMD to your receiver.
Connect the Battery pack and lay it in the hull.

NOTE HOW MUCH ROOM THERE REALLY is in this tank.... should be fine... no need to modify the speaker box as of yet!

Next connect the brake light and mount it with double sided tape to the speaker box. I use heavy duty black duct tape to fasten the excess wire to the speaker box and also to hold the wire/LED to the brake assembly vs using the included almuinum tape.
Note how everything seems to fit so nicely...

Once everything was in.... I took a deep breath and fired her up!

Similar to the Tamiya M26 Pershing , this KV-1 has the throttle hold, park position feature which is a good thing. You must move the trim tab up then move the throttle fully up/down before it will leave the park position. I like this as it will keep you from driving your tank off a table during start up!

LET ME TELL YOU ALL,,,,, THE SOUNDS are AWESOME! THE MAIN GUN sound is a little different, but the engine sounds.. C'MON... THEY ARE INSANE!!! Love the sounds ,,,, especially start up !! HAS THAT FEROCIOUS GROWL!!!

I drove it all over the house and then outside for an hour it seems.... I KNOW, I KNOW... get back to work... but I couldn't help myself!!

I did more work,, but I am out of time tonight to post it.. MORE REPORTS TOMORROW!

Tuesday night report is on the UPPER HULL ASSEMBLY!!! STAY TUNED!!

Love what you had to say about the sounds! Also like the "park position" feature. I've seen a couple tanks go flying off tables at the local battles that I attended. Most guys stick hard foam blocks underneath the tank to prevent the tracks from making contact with the table top. I turned a Sherman on, only to have it go charging into an obstacle head on, because I had forgotten to set the notched throttle stick to neutral after I had last shut the tank down. But the "park" feature adds extra security in preventing your tank from getting airborne!

I would be horrified to watch my $700+ tank go charging off the edge of a table like that, as they don't fly well at all[:@] Its probably a feature they really should all have..as it sounds fairly idiot proof.

So far, your pleased, I'm pleased, and even the Kremlin is pleased! I'm staying tuned Tomas!

Tomas, really nice job on dealing with the wiring, clean.

RSEA: "That would most likely lead to us painting flowers and peace signs on our tanks, and well, I think our little skirmishes would get kind of boring then."

Image below: WWII German 12.Pz.Div. symbol (1941-1945)

Well comrade peon, just a tip, you can't trust anything about those elitist pagan fascists. Peace symbols and their variants on a WWII German Jagdpanther ain't going mean what your sorry hippie mind set thinks it means. And if my Jagd don't kill you, my 12 Army Group, First Army. 3rd Armor Pershing will put you peacefully away, just because your you. And the krauts used a tree – bush camo pattern late in the war to hide their tanks in forests and I'm sure they would have used flower patterns too, if it would have better concealed their armor from P-47s etc (Jabos).

Kindest Regards, John

ONE UPDATE ON THE ASSEMBLY BEFORE I GO TO WORK!

page 17 , STEP 22 UPPER HULL DETAIL .

Grab that beautiful upper hull and remove the center sprue and remove any burrs.

Next from Sprues A, (there are 5) remove all parts A3, A5, A6, and also from SPRUE C, remove parts C11 ,12, 17,18, for the exhaust, also parts C23,25 for the horn detail, and C19 for the vision port, C7 antenna, C16,22 and C15.
You will also need the Magnets from the small parts bag.

Now lay all the parts out so you can admire your gathering skills !!!

Dry fit all parts to ensure trouble free fit, then using your liquid cement/pro-weld of choice attach all hull support parts A3 , A5 C16,C22. Use medium CA on B10 incase you want to be able to remove it in the future or make it a functional hatch.

When using the CA glue to adhere the magets down be certain to glue the magnet with the black line facing DOWN!!!

Attach all other trim parts with Pro-weld/liquid cement. Don't want any parts to loosen in battle!

=STAND BACK AND ADMIRE your handy work!!!

Nice stuff. It is a brilliant detail touch that your work station looks like furniture found in Shizuoka, Japan. Kinda a surprise for Texas, thought you might be working atop a big stuffed longhorn or something. Plus, cool PR style photography. Looking forward to more.

That speaker box is pretty un-Tamiya like, at least the deck. Usually it's all plastic with a grill to protect the cone.

Still pretty slick though. Throttle hold huh? That's a great feature that I'm sure my T34 will like.

Nice build so far Tomas.

Next we assemble the machine gun with the optical fiber, Led, and plastic and metal parts. Also begin assembling the 3 storage boxes , and the gun cleaning rod case which mounts on the upper hull sides.
Note the rear transmission panel hatch is functional and will house the on/off switch. I mounted the round covers by "SPOT GLUING" with medium CA Glue so in the future I can always remove them if needed/wanted. also attached the tow cable ratchet hooks. for these one must drill a 2mm hole on the sides of the upper turret. Looking at the inside of the upper turret will reveal the marks of where to drill.
The other detail parts such as the PHOTO-ETCHED GRILLEs and headlight will not be added at this time.

PAGE 18 , step 25.

We move to the underside of the upperhull. Mounting of the Turret Rotation Unit. and turret rotation spacers/discs. Make certain these discs rotate freely. also make sure when attaching the transmission cover hatch that it is centered and secured with the magnets and then apply hinge covers parts D7,D8.

While we are at it we will skip ahead a bit and assemble the GUN BARREL with recoil arm,
and also begin to assemble the gun elevation unit on the TURRET BOTTOM. make sure you use the pro-weld on the roller stays. this will keep the rollers from coming out. make sure you don't put too much adhesive and end up gluing the rollers!

Lastly attach the machine gun detail pieces to the back of the TURRET Part F11. and join parts F4, F13 for the TURRET REAR BOTTOM.

Now we are moving along nicely!

Keep the pics coming Tomas, we all like them! Thanks for tolerating the side shows between them too![sm=tongue_smile.gif]

Colonel Klink, I mean John, I want to thank you for all your efforts in educating me about the finer points of the Armed Forces of Nazi Germany during World War II. I don't know what I'd do without you. I also want to thank you for clarifying my confusion about what a "peace symbol" looks like. I had not known the 12th Panzer division had used the "peace symbol", the same symbol that became so prevalent in the 1960s, on their tanks. Back in 1958, Gerald Holtom must have got the idea from looking at a wartime photograph of a 12th Panzer Divisional emblem. That makes perfect sense to me now. Speaking of the 12th Panzer division, your photograph reminded me of the "Kurland" cuff title I have sitting on my bookshelf. For a guy who stated he has no interest in the Eastern front or what went on there, I'm surprised to find not one, but two of your tanks to be modeled after ones that fought on the Eastern front! It is sort of fitting to the subject of this thread, that you posted a photo of a tank that belongs to a Panzer division that surrendered to the Russians.

Your efforts to broaden my knowledge base are admirable. But there is already another who has done quite a job at ensuring that my education in this area is never ending. My best friend, whom I have now known for almost 20 years, has been an intensive (that is probably an understatement) collector of Third Reich militaria for nearly 40 years now. In addition he was a History major in college and has been a History teacher for many years thereafter. In the past two decades I have been the recipient of enough information on Nazi uniforms, metals, badges, headgear, edged weapons, award documents, photographs, panzers, u-boats, aircraft, Heeres, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe, SS and Adolf Hitler himself to last me at least a couple lifetimes. I have even held Hermann Goring's Pilot Observer's badge with diamonds in my hands (the set that he was wearing and was taken from him when he was captured), among the many artifacts I've had thrust infront of me from that era.

Do I think I know absolutely everything that there is to know about Nazi Germany and their war efforts? No. Do I think you know everything that there is to know about Nazi Germany and their war efforts? No. Do I think my friend knows everything..sometimes it seems like he actually might.. The one person, I do know of personally, who could provide exceptional information in regards to Nazi and Russian tanks would be a man who actually fought in and along side them during the war. He fought in one of the more well-known Waffen SS Panzer divisions and happens to reside here in Arizona. My already mentioned best friend has known him since the 70s, and I have had the privilege of meeting him a few times over the years.

Anyway John, I don't care if your Tiger is of the 3rd SS Panzer Division and the commander keeps a picture of Theodore Eicke in his pocket to comfort him on cold Russian nights. Any time that we end up on the same battlefield, you go ahead and bring it on baby! I'll be more than happy to trade IR slugs with you! Oh, and as far as my "hippie mindset" goes, I want to give you a special, peaceful, and loving message, that is just for you, because you always give me that warm and fuzzy feeling inside with your responses to my posts.

Loving regards, vegetable rights and peace!

Steve

Default RE: TAMIYA KV-1 - TX ARMOR ONLINE ASSEMBLY

GENTS,

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT... PLease keep the responses to this thread ON TOPIC to the KV-1.

I appreciate your ENTHUSIASM, PASSION and energy/excitement... and thanks for letting me see you are all here and interested!

This is meant to be in regards to the ASSEMBLY OF A TAMIYA KV-1.
I know I have been working overtime and have not been able to post in several days.
Apologies for my absence, I must say that today I took the KV-1 to our battleday and showed off the running lower hull and the bits of the upper hull and turret. So far everyone was IMPRESSED by the SIZE, QUALITY, and SOUND of the TAMIYA KV-1.
We at TEXAS ARMOR ASSOCIATION all run everything from WSN, HL, MATO , FOV conversions etc...
We are not picky as to kits, ready to runs... all that matters is that they are COMPATIBLE for COMBAT.

This is one SLICK TANK! MORE TO COME THIS NEXT WEEKEND!

-CHEERS!

TOMAS
