Default Gears

I'm doing research on how gears actually work and figured it would be good for those of us who don't actually know. These articles describe the various components of our beloved gearboxes.

I'm still looking for an article explaining the benefits of mixing gear materials.

Hopefully someone finds interest in this topic.

If you are referring to using a nylon gear and metal gears, I believe the main idea is to quiet the unit down as much as possible. Other than that I can't see any reason to mix them.

also they sometimes use different materal gears as a failsafe. use a weaker materal so that if the transmission or what ever is subject to excessive stress the cheaper easy to replace gear gets eaten up and thet the more expencive harder to replace ones dont.

The nice thing about nylon is that it is so quiet. I am going to try a home conversion of a nylon gear box to 3:1 and see what happens.
