Default Spektrum DX5E Self-Center Gimbles?/ Edit: Self Serviced!

Pulled my transmitter out of storage and makingpreparationsto order my first Tamiya. Where can I purchase a self centering gimble for the left side of my transmitter or is this necessary? Does the Tamiya elevation unit stay in a lowered or elevated state depending on the position of the control stick?

BiggTony Horizen Hobby's wont do the self centering on the DX5e and they wont sale you the parts you can do it your self with a couple small springs and a screw did mine last year work very well here is the thread I posted last year .The small springs came out of a HL non smoke and sound Tx .

Wow, that sucks that they won't do that. Thanks Jimmy for the response the mod looks simple enough! I'll run down to the hardware store tomorrow and find the appropriate springs or just wind my own. I take it that there must be a bit of tweaking to make sure the gimble lever stays center?

I was planning on the Sherman......but since I got the HL KV-1, I seriously considering the Tamiya KV-2. Kind of up in the air about it. I didn't think I'd like the looks of the KV-1 so much, but I'll be damned if this tank doesn't look mean!

LOL! I still have my tiger to bits (first tank) and my Kv-1 is on the prep table to be textured/corrected and welded. Nice to have more than one project going on....I think I burnt myself out on the Tiger cause I've been wanting to cut some serious corners. So hopefully by putting it on the back burner and perhaps get further with the KV, it'll re-motivate me into finishing the Tiger. I figured I'd better get the Tamiya soon, or I'll change my mind and get several more HL versus the one Tamiya! lol

Thanks alot Jimmy. I'll get this transmitter open later today and try the mod. At worst case should I fail, I'll see if the gimble from an HL transmitter could make for a swap.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out.

Was three springs necessary? I just got back from Acehardware with a slew of springs....(I needed some any ways for the HL KV-1 suspension) so I'm going to see if I can mod this with one spring, like the other self centering one. I'll post the results should I succeed or ask for assistance if needed!

Thanks!
Tony

Okay, got her done. 20 min modification and it actually works better than my factory self centering as far as tension is concerned. So, when I'm feeling a bit froggy later, I'll make that leap to replace the rest of the factory springs with tighter ones.
All I did was use one PC fan screw and nut with a mini extension spring cut to correct length.
Then I simply made the black centering arm that rests under thepotentiometerwith sheet styrene and viola! No need to beg Horizon Hobby for a new gimble or servicing it!

I contacted them before making this thread and asked if they could provide the part. They finally emailed me back and send they will modify it for me, I just have to send it in...............................after I've already altered it myself. Go figure.

Thanks Jimmy! I haven't had theopportunityto use the transmitter yet. I bought this before I got into tanks and was getting ready to dive into RC planes. I'm assuming thedigitaltrims don't have a memory setting once it's cut off? That's no good.

Ahh, that's right. Tamiya incorporates the trim for some functions. Is that the only thing? Can't that be used for the 5th channel?
Edit: I just read more info on other spektrums. I guess I'll just sell this one and get the DX6i. Even though it still has digi trims, you can program the switches or end point adjustment on the trim.

I thought you can program up to 10 vehicles with the Dx6i?
I can't even find a 2.4ghz skyport futaba radio being sold anywhere. Only FM......

Jimmy

Just add fire buttons. It makes the whole process easy.

How and where do you solder momentary switches so that this can be done? Any tutorials on this?

edit: Nevermind, found it.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9172844/tm.htm

Basicallyall themomentaryswitches added just make it moreconvenientin it's placement if I'm thinking correctly. This doesn't in anyway fool the "digital" trim into "thinking" it didn't move at all right? Nice mod, but I think I'll just sell the DX5e and get a DX6i. Not sure if horizon hobby would warranty the tx if they can see that the circuit board has been soldered on to or the case drilled.
