Stug III traverse-a question
Has anyone done a working traverse in a Stug III or IV?
If so can you tell about what you encountered? Can you share pics and/or technical info? If not, then lurk and see if anyone else has something to share. I have done several traverse set-ups in an Elefant, a Su-76-I, a Panzertroyer, and a SU-152. All had interesting challenges, opportunities and limitations. I will be reworking my Stug III in the near future and building a Stug IV so i appreciate any good input on this subject. I believe the Stugs had approx. 25 degrees of traverse movement. |
RE: Stug III traverse-a question
best method I have found is 2 HL stug motors - works with most control systems, tho I will admit that my metal work is a little 'Heath-Robinson' [:@], more skilled modellers will probably fare better...

RE: Stug III traverse-a question
nice but that's not a Stug. I was looking for Stugs specifically since every fighting compartment space and the mantlet match-up to the frontal armor is a bit different (in my experience).
But thanks for the input, and BTW your layout in the SU-152 is a lot better then mine. Another project that i will be revisiting. |
RE: Stug III traverse-a question
Thanks :D
For the record, I should have mounted the motor 5mm further back - the arm fouls the back of the bracket [:@] I have 2 profiline Stugs in the 'shop' at the moment, I'd do the same for the motorisation, but no firm plans for the gun mount yet [&:] A club mate of mine is working on a Stug IV with 2 HL mechs, I'll let you know if he gets it up and ruining |
RE: Stug III traverse-a question
If I rememerb correctly, BubbaJoe has done one recently. He used the Stug units for elevationa nd traverse as well.

RE: Stug III traverse-a question
I added the traverse to my Stug. I upgraded the elevation and added depression (something the stock HL stug III was sorely missing) to my HL Tamlong Stug It is FO Tamiya with the IR battle system. Here is a video of it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3Kfxw_JMvY You have good timing I just posted it.
I used two Tamiya elevation units. I don't have any pix available now since they are in my latptop that is out for service. I had to do a great deal of triming on the mantlet edges. I then added a screw to the fixed trunion from the top of the turret so that it would traverse. I did used the shorter gun barrel since the log was too heavy for the elevation without a recoil unit. |

Bubba's stuff is always interesting.

RE: Stug III traverse-a question
thanks those little details are helpful to me. love to see pics of both your friend's and yours.

RE: Stug III traverse-a question
Ken,
I've not done a Stug, but I've done a Jagdtiger and SU 85. Both times I fabbed a trunnion assembly and mounted servos to push and pull the trunnion. JT had tons of room. Su...not so much. I know you've got more experience than I on these turretless wonders. Pics are posted on the DAK website I'm guessing. Not very advanced, but bulletproof in the field. <br type="_moz"/> |

RE: Stug III traverse-a question
thanks Jeff. Yes i have experience but i am always willing to learn. I have one of Wechoe's traverse units that uses micro switches and gearhead mtors. It will ed of in my JT as that project comes up. Never tried to build one like that. Might be an approach.

Here are some pics of my stugIV which is in progress. It's the asiatam kit with Hen long elevation units used for traverse and elevation. Traverse was turned side ways. The metalwork is a little crude but works. The recoil is Tamiya Tiger I but if I did it again I would use the Panther unit, it's smaller. With the Asiatam gun mount there's only about 10 degrees of traverse which is close to the prototype's 12 if I remember correctly. Mike EOT |

Let me know how the up-side down recoil works for you? I had JP that had issues with the recoil unit being flipped over. The gears wouldn't stay engaged wit the main gear. I had to shim out the main gear to keep it in contact with the drive motor gears. YMMV??? If your Stugs fight as good as mine have for me, I'm sure you will be pleased in the end.

RE: Stug III traverse-a question
thanks. i believe it was plus/minus 12 for a total slew of 25 deg. but that may not be appropriate to all models. Thanks for the input. i like your work.

The Stug. lll and lV only has elevation, no traverse. It was the Jadgers - Jadgpanther/tiger Panzerjadger lV and the Hetzer with traverse. |
