The latest RX18 have a new small board over the Fet's, devoted to drive them.

Earlier version sometimes did burn due to improper driving from the older circuits.

Thats good to know, I will have to get my hands on one and try it out - the Rx-14P's aren't cutting it in my heavier tanks that's for sure.

mart with the chokes fitted to the motors the RX18 whine is near non existent hoping to get the dbcr2 in and the elv board hooked up
and do some further tests hopefully for the swindon meet

Right now I'll settle for some tanks I can battle with - the Jagdpanzer IV was decidedly underwhelming at Danville on the hard clay there (didn't help that the barrel flash LED blew out the flash circuit on the DBC so I couldn't battle it anyway) and really struggled in the soft dirt at Jim's place. And we all saw the Sturmpanzer struggle to pull the skin off a rice pudding at Swindon last year [:@]

I would have to agree. The 18 is by far the best esc on the market aside from another brand that I won't mention so as to not upset a certain crowd.
I have used the 18 with and without the DBC and really have no complaints. As you said it is all in the gearing. A good low speed high torque motor is a must in any situation. That i think is the first mod people should do whether they have the 3:1's in or not. You can actually get nearly the same results just with the proper motor and pinion gear selection with out drop down gear boxes, but i would still recommend gear boxes but with a good torque motor.

Hello Gents,

I can attest to the RX18 v7's capability to run heavies. My modded M1A2 now clocks around 10 kg (22 lb), and still running. 1.5 set of Pershing Metal tracks, met sprocks, Std Met gbox, 4 x 2000 mAh batt, set of Pb weights and 2 x 6v bat (for wireless cam).

the stock HLpanther G from HL don't ride good in grass, it has metal gearbox standard and metaltracks my tamiya's are at home as the panther still try to move through the grass everyone expierenced that to

Yes it is all about the gear ratio. Has nothing much to do with the RX 18. I have an RX 18 powering a Tamiya Sherman Gearbox, and it has no issues.

Hi YHR and Karel,

My HE/HL M1A2 only does have SS gbox, coz I reckoned having a brass 3:1 gbox would make this really crawl. At ~9.7 kg, it still runs and pivots on grass. The only downside though is that it can only reach a top speed of 25 +/- 2 kph (back calculated true speed). Too slow for a gas turbine powered beast.

Any ideas guys, aside from El Mod migration to allow for higher voltage and/or better motors without shedding off weight?

I have the same issue with my HE/HL Leo. I imagine a higer speed motor would be one way.

hi dan still not figured the size of the ones fitted
but i have managed to get a set of 2.2 micro henry chokes and will test those ASAP
another option would be to get some ferrite beads and install as close to the motors as poss?

Thanks for posting the video of this tank. I have been wondering about how this Tiger ran. Looked fine to me. other option was the Antisam hull with metal drive wheels and suspension. This may be a better deal. Nice tank.

Have to disagree here the difference between my panther running the rx18 and the tamiya dmd t-03 is huge. Now im not sure if this is due to using the HL tx or whether the using a dbc would improve things.

Well, for a start the low speed running is far better with the tamiya dmd, speed transitions are far smoother. Also as Ive said before I can do spot turns locking one track with the tamiya where as the rx-18 wont let me. Again this could be down to the shoddy HL controller. Would be interesting to see how this would change with a proper hobby grade radio!

another bad point for HL is my panther hangs sometimes when you make quick movement, you have to restart him then, ist annouying

Thanks for posting video on this tank. first time I have seen one. I was wanting to see how this compres to the Antesian hull. It looks good and is nice to know that the r-18 can handle it.

With the 3:1 gears I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in control. Of course I have DBC with HL radio's and DBCRC 2 with hobby radios in all my tanks. I don't think I have one stock HL tank. I suppose the momentum feature on the DBC is what is the contibuting factor to the smooth operation. All in all just goes to show what a great piece of electrical hardware the DBC is.

So probably you are correct. A bare bones RX18 with HL controller is not as sensitive as a Tamiya ESC. However I have got pretty good slow speed performance out of a stock set up, but it does require a very light touch on the sticks. Throw a DBC in and turn on momentum though and the difference will disappear. Remember we are talking about a $25 ESC so I would hope their would be some subtle differences between it and a $150 ESC.

The point of this post was never to compare and RX18 to a Tamiya ESC. It was to demonstrate that an RX 18 can handle the weight of an all metal tank if the gear selection is right.
