M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
Hello and thanks for looking at my post for a start. I own a fairly new M26 and this being my first tank I want to make it my own and add my own touch to it. I wanted to try and start with the M26 because of the conversion that can be made to make it into a T26E4. The frontal armor and the spaced armor in the front seem pretty basic from a modeling standpoint and I feel would make the tank quite different. I recently built a 1/35 T26E4 from Hobby Boss and will be using this tank to get all of my measurements and references which i hope to sucessfully convert from 1/35 to 1/16th. My issue is that i have the creative ability of my 8 yr old daughter and have never taken on this type of a project. Im looking to you folks for ideas and how toos that can help me along my trip. I have scurried the internet looking for other conversions like this and have only come across two of them. One named "Aarons T26E4 (cant find the link right now) and another one that someone inherited project(cant find that link either sorry :( ). In "Aarons" build he seemed to use some type of plastic sheet to make the panels and a green type of putty to simulate the welds. I have aquired some scrap aliminum metal from my shop which i think would work unless you guys think the plastic sheet is better in which case can i get it at a basic hobby shop?? Also what is the green putty?? I look fwd to your guys sugesstions and help as lord knows it im gonna need it.
Thx Nick |

Plastic is easy to work with and the putty was probably Squadron green putty.

Hi Nick, I converted one 2-3 yrs ago....sold it to Phil. Biggest work is replacing the oval loader's hatch with a finger chopper, getting a loooong gun tube and building the turret counterweight. Chassis add-ons not that bad. Need T-81 tracks though, to make it look right. I'd be happy to send some in progress build photos. PM me.

Aaron Arnt was a very talented modeler.
I know he used styrene on his tanks. ~ Jeff |

I love the "super-p" Hope you enjoy building one.
Most guys use styrene sheet for conversions but the aluminium you've got would be ok if you're happy working with it, plus it's free..bonus:D Here's a pic of mine, (she's not 100% accurate;)) http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/...sdad/001-7.jpg |

It looks great and I hope my is even close to your build. Im probably gonna make the barrel extention and the tracks the last thing I convert as those are more functional than just some cosmetic panels. Can I change the barrel if I have the airsoft internals?? ORIGINAL: fynsdad I love the "super-p" Hope you enjoy building one. We know HL tanks are cheaper than the metal track set, but... ... if you wanna run with the big dogs, jump off the porch. :D ~ Jeff |
RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
Mine are actually T-66 tracks, I think, but I got them cheap:D:D
As to the barrel I just extended it using a second HL barrel, you would have to extend the inner barrel as well to retain the BB funtion, oh and try not to have the join showing;) |
RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
I believe the only difference between T-66 and T-81 tracks are the guide horns.

RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
So i spent last night measuring and re-measureing and remeasuring and drawing and measuring and converting............zzzzzzz..........but i finally got the fontal and turret armor drafted up and am gonna do a rough cut for the metal work today. Pics or it didnt happen.
Here is the sheet of paper that got overly used for drafting. The top are the measurements from the 1/35 scale and the bottom is the 1/16 http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps09920c29.jpg The I did a rough draw on some scrap aliminum sheets and will cut it today. My only thougth so far is im gonna have to do double cuts to thicken the plates as the sheets are faily thin http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps8cd0c2d4.jpg If the cutouts turn out ok I plan on doing a rough fitting tonight and will try and get some progress pics for you guys. RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
Just for conversation purposes, how do you plan on assembling the metal pieces?
That will be the interesting part of the project, that and how to deal with the additional weight on the tanks suspension and then needing bearings all the way around. ~ Jeff |
RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
Ok so just went to the floor and did a quick weight check and I don't think the weight will be that big of an issue. an entire sheet of the aluminum only weight in at .45 lbs and im only using 1 complete sheet. Let me know if im wrong but adding only a pound afer all said and done shouldn't alter the tanks performance too much.

Ok,,,Status update....
Spent this morning working on the front armor. I have cut most of the metal to size via the conversion and suprisingly i only had to size up one or two peices due to me not being able to cut a straight line to save my life. So here they are. 1st Mount up of the first layer of armor. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psf37ca121.jpg 2nd Layer mocked up and sized http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psdc97b76f.jpg I still have to cut the top bar that goes across the main mantle and the xtra peice that goes over the front gunner but i went ahead and added some of the peices that were pulled off to mount this arrmor http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps3e6dc016.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps24eb5cba.jpg Questons and commments greatly appreciated and mind you this is my first ever "BIG" project like this |

Those front fenders are really throwing off "the look" of the glacis plate for the Super Pershing.
~ Jeff |
RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
they will be going soon enough...just need to figure out what tool i need to cut them off...not too steady with a dremel
|
RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
I cut mine off with a DREMEL and then thinned out the leading edge to look more scale. :D

RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
Update time....well spent the weekend fiddling around with my tank and made some good progress...I got the front upper and lower glacious cut and primered, also picked up a hand held mider saw and took care of the excess fenders...mind you that I plan on adding some "welding" to all mating parts and some more detailed parts
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps96b93364.jpg Next I cut and mounted the turret Armor....Again more "welding" and details will be added. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pscc2ac62c.jpg The barrel had the end cut off to fit the armor but that will allow me to legthen it without messing about with the airsoft functions. Im going to alide a slightly bigger tube over the pre existing system and mount sand and paint. Next I took some pointers on the hatch and got a great donation from a fellow RCU member to help me get started on it....Now i just need to make the extra door. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps81e2c11f.jpg So here is the final overall shot so far...so things that are left to complete are the barrel, counterweight, new hatch, sanding, and adding extra details. Again thanks for all the help and suggestions. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps539a3a80.jpg |

RE: M26 Pershing to T26E4 Super Pershing Conversion Help
More Update with pictures!!!! Had a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to legthen the barrel without interfering with the Airsoft portion and to allow it to still fit in my case cor it and to make the barrel have a more of an "updated" look...Solution...I added a smal pipe that now slides over the existing barrel and slides all the way down to the crease near the turret...Not perfect but turned out way better than expected.
Took these pictures thinking they looked good until I uploaded them so I will get some more but for now here they are.....Next will be to start looking into making this thin IR Battle readyhttp://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps3ad46556.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps6f512a8c.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps488fdd31.jpghttp://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psf4a87ae3.jpg |

Make the front of the tank sit lower like in the real thing, reflecting the added armor on the front glacis plates
