RE: JS-3 conversion kit for the KV-1
looks super. thanks for sharing this, hope to see some build pics of bothe the is and su.

RE: JS-3 conversion kit for the KV-1
I have almost finished a Stug IV: after that I think I will begin with the SU-152, while thinkering about the JS-3 turret mechanics.
Sure will post some pics along the road. |
RE: JS-3 conversion kit for the KV-1
So the IS-3 'kit' is undersize to fit the HL KV-1 hull?
|
RE: JS-3 conversion kit for the KV-1
It didn't need to be undersized, that's the trick! The resin hull is in scale.
|
RE: JS-3 conversion kit for the KV-1
Well how did they mate it to the hull? I'd be interested to see that. I know that the JS-3 was based off a JS hull, which is narrower than the KV hull.
|
RE: JS-3 conversion kit for the KV-1
Maaaaan... that looks really great! http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/micons/m6.gif And so does the 152 as well.
I just love the front glacis angles and the low profile of their turret designs. No matter if the tank was junk or not, it's a very cool kit. And I want one! :D ~ Jeff |

It's time to update this thread with some pictures and few words. I have almost completed painting, therefore enjoy some pics from the past build steps:

...build pics galore...but quite self-explainatory. Smoke pipes, elevation and turret details.

Hull and turret details (many self-constructed like the working barrel support). The Dshk MG was assembled using spare parts, forex, brass, etc.

Airbrush painting: first pic is model after the 3 shades of Russian green, second one is after airbrushing all the colors and stenciling the numbers and stars.
That's were I am now. Next steps will be detailing by brush and then final assembling. Control electronics will be supplied by the new IBU2-full option by Scooter. Feel free to put questions about any of the above steps. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915766 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915767 |
Very Nice. This is going to be a very awesome tank. I like your craftmanship. The barrel support is really cool.
|
Thank you.
That choice deserves a bit of explanation: I wanted the turrret to be able to perform a full 360+ degree turning. Not an infinite turning ability but maybe a couple of turns each way. That's why I drilled a limited hole (a couple of cms in diameter) on the bottom plate of the turret: all 14 wires will run through it, about along the rotation axis. That should avoid the cable getting stuck against items when turning the turret. But at the same time this choice left a very limited space for barrel elevation (the turret itself has a very low profile and thick walls), therefore I had to trim the elevation mechanics to obtain a fit. Good is that with the new IBU2 it is possible to achieve bi-directional elevation even with a stock HL elevation unit. |

Very nice...a bit narrow for a JS-III bit looks great. It was a mechanical nightmare and most never got out of the motor pool...like our M-60A2s....but it was a mean looking tank. It would be a good IDF capture and may be worth the cost.
|
I took a moment to look it up, and according to the book "Patton" by R.P. Hunnicutt, "Although eventually issued to the troops in 1974 and deployed to Europe the following year, the M60A2 was never popular tank. Its complexity and the need for a skilled maintenance and operation earned it the nickname "Starship" With the shift of interest away from missile armament to high performance kinetic energy weapons, the M60A2 was retired from service." Finished assembling the turret interiors, connecting all the wires, gathering them into plugs and running them through the turret floor: 18 connections in all!
Tested that everything is working so far and tuned the barrel recoil. This machine begins to look mean! http://i72.servimg.com/u/f72/15/16/85/12/assemb10.jpg |
looking very nice can't wait to see it done

Tank completed!
After the last assembling of the hulls and plugs, I have switched it on and tested all the functions of the new IBU2 Full Option which controls it, as well as the custom soundset I have assembled myself for the JS-3. Everything runs perfectly! Enjoy some indoor pics for now, outdoor pics and a video will follow asap. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1917284http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1917285http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1917286http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1917287 |
Great looking build! Have always loved the frying pan turret and pike glacis. Any chance of a turret interior pic of the trunion/recoil workings? Would be a big help to future builders.
|
The recoil is done through a simple mini-servo with a rod (since the IBU2 board supports servo recoil), but unfortunately I missed to take pics of it :(
|
wow man, that some pritty good modelling , Paint looks awsome to. Now I'm all in for a video :-)
|
very good i like
good job |
Looks really good and a video would be the icing on the cake.

"Icing on the cake": funny, in Italian it's similar but we say the equivalent of "The small cherry on the cake" ("La ciliegina sulla torta").
Anyway I am editing the captions, a demo video is incoming... |
|
thanks for video and is very good

smooth.

I like.....very cool.....It would be nice to have a working soviet king tiger. http://www.digitalso.com/hu9h.jpg |

Great looking tank, awesome job.
|
nice job.....pics of inside of turret?
|
I took just those already published in past pages, sry
|
Hello, it's so hard take a screwdriver for unmounting the turret and let us see the recoil and elevation mod?
I noticed in the video that the recoil it's not very smooth, may be someone can help you with the mod |

Anyway I'm not going to dismount the turret just to take one more picture of the inside (with 14 wires going through a ~30mm hole it's not quick nor easy), but i will certainly do that the first time I'll have to do some servicing :) |
Hey,
Just been looking through as I've just started work on this kit conversion and found these pages and your pictures really helpful so far. You don't happen to have any more information and/or guidance of putting this kit together - it'd be really appreciated. Cheers, Rothy. |
Building is simple but instructions are not always clear, just some care if you want to build workable hinges off the resin ones, and I had to lower the external tank mounts to allow full turret rotation.
|
That's great. Something I really wanted to ask was about the metal barrel. Is that hand made or a bought upgrade for another tank?
|
The barrel was a spare from the Tamiya IS-2 model I found on Axel's Modellbau site. It was easy to fit the resin muzzle brake on it.
|
Cheers. Actually did some google sifting and found this. Might help anyone else later on http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.co...-3barrels.html.
You don't mind if I hit you up with questions as I work through this? First time doing a conversion kit  |
Nope, just collect some questions and put them together to avoid sending one reply each.
