I.R. Emitter socket

A bunch of new guys are adding new systems to their tanks, so I thought it might be time to share an idea I have used on all my IR battle tanks.

This was brought about by the need to easily experiment with different IR LEDs without having to solder them up. Also if you ever have an IR LED fail on the field on a tank that you have mounted the emitter in the mantlet you can lose some valuable battle time as you have to remove the old one and run a new one. This socket idea means you can change an IR LED in seconds.

The first picture shows a filed down 2 wire socket that has been mounted in the mantlet. The second picture shows an LED is pressed into the socket and a shroud is installed over the LED to make it legal.

Two things
  • This make LED replacement very simple.
  • The LED is removed when not in battle just like the TBU so your model has better display qualities..

I don't that because gunner's sight is reserved for a camera in my develop road map:)

RichJohnson 03-15-2015 06:37 AM

Ive been putting the IR right in front of the barrel flash unit in my barrels that they will fit in. Mantle sight is a fall back.
Neat idea Dan. Thanks

That's is an excellent idea.

I like the aesthetic look of it.

Max-U52 03-15-2015 07:35 AM

That looks really good. I like the plug and play aspect.

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not raggin' on ya, but I have a lot of trouble using your website. It's hard to find particular items and then get prices. Just a little feedback from one of the more intellectually challenged users. If you want to dumb it down a bit I'd have much more success there. :)

I like that you have a plan in mind. You've been doing a great job so far, too. I only suggest that the boards be made more robust? Thank you!

???? You just slide the cursor over the product Tab and click on it. It takes you to the product page with pictures and prices. How would you suggest to make it easier?

Max-U52 03-15-2015 01:32 PM

OK, now I got it. Every time I move my cursor over the products page icon it gives a drop down that shows tank shop and that drops down to mato stug and tanks for sale. I thought those were my only two options, and I didn't know I could just ignore the drop down and click on products page. But I'm the kind of idjit that uses this stuff so maybe if the drop down had an "all products" option I'd have gotten it sooner. I guess I've gotten spoiled by the search box, which is usually how I find stuff. If your site has one I couldn't find it.

Does the IR sensor mount come with the white 5 pin insert or do I have to provide that? If it does come with the insert, what's on the other side of that?

Hey Gary here is a picute of the IR Sensor mount that i got from Dan at Battle Armor the red marker on both ends represent the positive pin. hookup seems pretty straight forward. I just haven't gotten to that point yet. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2081723

I'll add a drop down that will do the same as clicking on to the products page. I doubt you are the only guy that has happened to, as I get a lot of requests for pricing which has always baffled me as everything is on the web page.

I can add the cable to the sensor. The Clark board has an orientation socket, and it is 180 degrees different so I have to know ahead of time you are adding it to a Clark so I can change the pins..

Cheers

My first clark is airsoft but if I put an IR tank on clark I might try one of those out. My IR tank is almost exactly like Angelo's Taigen Full Metal Tiger One, IBU2 for electronics, except his is a late and mine's an early. That base looks like it should slip right into the Taigen metal Tiger One Early turret. Have you had many customers install it in one of those? I know the IBU supports the Tamiya apple, but I'll have to email for the info on the plug. I have a wide assortment of JST plugs, so I should be covered and swapping pins is no biggie. Kevin taught me that stuff a while ago. And it gives me an excuse to get a better crimper. And I've been thinking about routing from the turret. I need enough spare wire to change batteries, but I can always make up a 5 pin "extension cord". I've been thinking about kinda sistering a daughterboard next to the existing daughter board that holds the 8 pin and running a five pin from the IBU to the daughter board right alongside the 8 pin that goes from mother to daughter. then from 5 pin daughter to the turret, and if I get really ambitious I might try a slip ring. That's too many wires to even think about until I get a lot more serious about it, but they have zillions of different slip rings available for cheap.

I like your idea of a daughter board. i actually have one on the way From Karl at Radio Control Custom Tanks. Here is a link to products page and the daughter board. Iwas gettting it because I could just plug in everything individually instead of soldering a bunch of wires to one thing. Or having several wires run off of one contection. It replaces the 8 pin and then addes more connection points for stuff like the lights and machine gun.

The cable I supply plugs right into the Clark Board.

And the IBU2?

YHR 03-15-2015 07:29 PM

I remember there being something different about the IBU 2. The wiring harness for the LED lights and the IR sensor are separated.. I think you would have to split the cables and run two wires two different ports. Because the IBU2 has the ring of lights to add to the Heng Long TBU they did it a little different then the BARC, Clark or Tamiya.. Page 11 on your IBU2 manual explains it.( Although this manual is from the Old IBU2, and I am not sure what updates they have done to it, so page numbers might not be the same.

My manual may be different because it says the IBU2 supports the Tamiya apple but that's all. No installation instructions or wiring diagrams, but all I have to do is email Ian (my supplier) and he'll send whatever info I need to make the hook up. The important thing is that I know the board is set up for it so the rest is just a case of getting it installed. When the time comes I'll investigate further and if it looks like the best option I may try out the IR emitter socket and the Tamiya base from Battle Armor. I also got some new IR emitters from digikey that Kevin recommended, and they're supposed to be the best thing going at the moment (we all know how fast that can change!).

But ... the new Clark Package is supposed to be here today so guess where my mind is right now! :)

olegnA 03-17-2015 06:11 AM

Wait a minute....Why did I miss this?

I can use this mod to make my dream tank: airsoft and IR in one tank. The main gun will be airsoft with barrel recoil (coming soon from Taigen) and your mod is the for IR battling. Both modes will be with IBU2.

I don't have to wait then for the Grant/Lee from Mato.
