Led question.

So i wanted to sand down the headlight leds to make them more dull and smaller. Ive seen it done on other tanks. Anyways so i sanded them down, finished with 2000 grit. Put them back in and not they wont light up. I know its not the connection. I have other leds so tested that and it works fine.
Did i sand them down too much. Ill post a pic in a second

either you sanded them too much or the + and - are switched

rescue119 01-21-2017 08:53 PM

Ya i think i did but I've seen them sanded the same. Oh well. And trying to get thise lights apart to replace the led is a pain. Not sure what super glue hl used. Oh well. Im gonna order metal ones anyways now 😛

See. But the halves do not come apart that easily lol

yep like my buddy Badass force did a month before that one

rescue119 01-22-2017 07:00 AM

Well since i have an extra light now. Im gonna throw it in the oven and see if that looses the glue. Those how we get old rc tires off of rims to reuse the rims

rgburrill 01-22-2017 07:02 AM

Just a hunch but it seems you have installed the LED backwards when you reassembled it.

rescue119 01-22-2017 07:17 AM

Nah. I think the led circuits shorted. It happens. Im gonna practice with a spare led the sanding and see if that is what did it but i think the shorted led is better reason.

I agree with you that the stock headlights don't look very good. I was thinking about using a 3 millimeter LED and clear plastic for a lens. What do you think? Is there enough room in there to get a 3 millimeter LED inside and then just have a flat clear plastic headlight lens?

Crius 01-22-2017 08:35 AM

And where are you located? I have lots and lots of LEDs and I would be more than happy to throw a bunch in an envelope and send them to you to experiment with. And naturally there would be no expense for you. There are lots of guys here that will tell you that I don't mind picking up the cost of postage and stuff if I think we'll get some good info from the experiment.

Crius 01-22-2017 08:39 AM

Okay, belay that request for location, I was just looking at your Leo thread and saw that you're in Moose Jaw. Let me know if I can help with the LEDs and if I can you can send me a PM with your address and I'll get them in the mail.

I may have asked this before, but what's your name? My name is Gary and I'm also known as Max.

I appreciate that but I'm gonna need new housings anyways after I butchered one trying to get it apart lol. I have lots of leds from tamiya lighting kits for rc cars.

HL really glued the halves together. I tried the oven method but the plastic started melting so I stopped that lol.

I think I'm gonna dive into the turret today. See what's going on in there haha

If you need to unglue any Heng Long Product don't cut it instead use a debonder such as "ZAP7" which breaks down the glue,
Paint the item with lots of the debonder and then just keep on twisting and working it until the item separates
once it is done make sure you clean all the debonder off the item.
Shaun.

rescue119 01-22-2017 09:34 AM

Ok ill try that. Thanks

philipat 01-22-2017 10:45 AM

Gary, a 3-mm LED should fit. I think the HL LEDs are all 5-mm LEDs. You could also try some of small SMDs.

Crius 01-22-2017 10:56 AM

Yeah, I think the 3mm should work OK, and with the Abrams the bright white should be right, as opposed to the warm white LEDs I use in WWII tanks.

I agree about the de-bonder, and I use this stuff called "Uncure" that works real well (my LHS carries it). With any de-bonder I haven't used before I'll take one of the sprues that came with the accessories (yeah, I save that stuff, mainly to stretch it for antennae and what not) and test to see if it will hurt the plastic. Much better to melt an old scrap piece of sprue rather than a brush guard or something else that won't be easy to replace, can ya dig it?

Cory is much, much easier to type! Cool! :p

rescue119 01-22-2017 07:24 PM

I ordered a debonder. Should be here in 2 days. I practiced sanding a spare led and it was fine. So i must have shorted the 2 leds. The stock leds are 5mm. There are 2 smaller 3mm red ones in the back. Which are not correct for a leo 2.

Trying to feed 2 wires through the housing is very tight. I can see why HL only covered one rod of the led. If both are covered they dont fit through.
