1/6 Scale Hetzer Project

I didn't want to say anything until the deal was sealed, but I just sent the money so it's time to start the thread.

I will be building a Blitzkrieg Armor 1/6 Hetzer, photos below. This is an unassembled, still in the box kit. A Gent in California bought it way back when and never put it together and now he's getting out of 1/6 and into 1/16 due to space considerations, so I was able to buy this from him. I won't say what I paid, but I thought it was a very good deal on a kit that you just can't get anymore.

I'll post more photos when she arrives. I've already spoken to two of our very best 1/6 guys and they've both agreed to provide whatever advice and tips that they can. When Erik gets back from China I'll be turning to him for help with electronics and the FPV system. The plan for this tank is to make it fully functional, add sounds and smoke and a .50 caliber paintball cannon, and detail the outside to the best of my abilities. I won't do much with the interior but I'll detail any areas that can be easily seen from outside. This is gonna be a fun build and I can't wait to get started. As soon as it gets here the first decision will be whether we keep the stock motors or upgrade to something better.

The bad news is that the seller used a special shipping company and they won't even be able to pack the tank until next week so I'm probably looking at at least two or three weeks until I actually receive the tank. Of course I will post lots and lots of photos and videos as soon as it arrives and throughout the entire build.

Looks cool Gary!

Jeez, nothing sucks worse than going through all the prep you needed tp pull the trigger only to have the brakes slammed on it.

Looking forward to the process.

Is it just me, or does something look different around here? The site was down for a minute, then wham, everything looks different.

Roboticus_Prime 04-18-2017 02:53 PM

At least we can see the pics of your new beast!

Airbrushler 04-18-2017 06:13 PM

OOOOOH Nice

TheBennyB 04-18-2017 07:46 PM

Hey Gary, your gonna have to grab a sawzaw, rope, and pulleys to do a make shift dumb waiter from bench to basement bash area!

Markocaster 04-18-2017 10:24 PM

Congratulations Gary! Looks great!
And yea it does look a little different

Looking real good. I scratch built a 1/16 Hetzer. Mine is a baby next to yours. :):) PP

This is a very rare tank indeed Gary I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with this project.

Imex-Erik 04-26-2017 01:12 PM

Not fair. How about we trade?? I've got a bunch of tanks and can use a 1/6th Hetzer :) Congrats on the find!

The Hetzer will be here Monday. The box is 36 by 22 by 18 inches and weighs 81 pounds.

I was wondering about how light it is... Then I remember how small it is as well..

Hetzer vs Jagdpanther

Crius 04-28-2017 08:56 AM

Thank you, Jarlath, that's exactly the kind of photo I've been looking for to show size compared to other German tanks and tank destroyers.

The paintball system will add weight, maybe as much as 15 pounds, and all the other stuff like Electronics and motors and servos, so I'm curious myself to see what the final weight will be. I'm guessing under 100 lbs, but we'll have to see.

rivetcounter 04-28-2017 12:52 PM

The Hetzer was known as der Krampfpanzer (cramp tank) owing to its small size and cramped fighting compartment but still packed a hefty punch that was hard to spot.

Would you happen to know what the most common size gun they put in the hetzer was?

Green Amphibian 04-28-2017 02:47 PM

It was a 75mm.

Crius 04-28-2017 03:54 PM

Thanks, Herman. A .50 caliber paintball won't be too far off scale.

Hey Gary, just a suggestion for speed controller. I have this in my homemade T34 and it works like a dream, never had a single problem with it and supper easy to install. Dimension Engineering - Sabertooth 2 x 60 Dual Motor Speed Controller #SABERTOOTH2X60

You might remember this video of it I posted a while back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agcG41sjERQ
Have
fun with your build.

Greg

Old MSgt 04-30-2017 05:22 AM

Yeah, Dimension Engineering Sabertooth ESCs are GREAT!!!!

But how about a 2X25 for the drive motors and a 2X12 for elevation? They'd be lower in price and you could get both for the cost of a 2X60. Just a thought...

Very cool video, Greg. I have a sabertooth 2x12 already, and that's earmarked for elevation and traverse if I go motor control as opposed to servo, and I was thinking Mike is right about getting a 2x25, mainly because the Hetzer is a pretty small tank, even compared to a T34. How much does your T34 weigh? 12 or 24 volt system? It drives really smooth. I would absolutely love to see some photos of the inside and the paintball system. Did you do a build log? I like the photo Jarlath posted, as that gives a good size reference for the Hetzer and just how small it was. Parking a Hetzer next to a King Tiger is kinda like parking a Mustang next to a full sized Dodge 15 passenger van. Or maybe like parking a Mini next to a Range Rover? :)
