Update!

I was finally able to cut the end of the slightly oversized aluminum plate I acquired for the bed for the SSYMS flatbed rail car.

In order to give the model of the flatbed rail car enough strength to support a 13 lb. tank I bonded the Aluminum plate to the bed framework using two methods the first method was CA adhesive because the plate was smooth and perfectly flat I was able to lay the plastic bed on the plate and using several heavy weights to maintain pressure on the bed and the natural capillary action of the thin CA adhesive, I was able to run a liberal bead along all the beams and points of contact with the Aluminum plate.

Because the bed was so large I did this in three stages, after aligning the plate with the framework and starting at one end, I made sure the weight was positioned so it would hold it all in place no matter how far the CA ran down the beam.

After completing all three sections I waited a full 24 hours for it all to cure before applying the second bonding method. The CA adhesive seemed to have worked quite well and made the rail car very strong, as I knew it would. I probably could have settled with just using that method, but engineering wise anything worth doing is worth doing to extreme.

The material chosen for the second method of bonding was Liquid Nails.
I ran a continuous bead along all of the joining surfaces, much like a weld bead. After that had set for a day I placed a couple of RC tanks on board (about 20 Lbs.) for testing and it does not flex at all.

I am satisfied that there will be no issues with the rail car supporting the weight of a tank or two, or possibly a 1/16th scale V2 rocket.

At this point all that was left was bonding the framework for the planking to the aluminum plate’s upper surface and cutting the wooden planks themselves.

For this I decide to do a similar method to attach the plank framing. First I bonded the three sections together with Plastruct Bondene as I wanted to be sure the frames were all aligned properly then I used a small amount of CA to fix them in place.

Next I used a silicone based adhesive to adhere the upper framework in a semi-permanent fashion.
The reason to make the bonding semi-permanent was so that if a section of it got damaged by the tank’s metal tracks I could replace it by simply printing another framework and replacing the damaged framework with a newly printed section.

Next I had to cut the required hardwood planks to the correct dimension to get them to fit into the raised edges of the printed framework.

In the 1/35th scale Sabre SSYMS kit I had purchased as a guide for my build they have 56 planks on the top of the flat bed rail car plus two thinner planks and a gap, originally I was going to use ½” wide hardwood strips for the planks which is closer to scale of the actual planks size used, but I did not have enough of them to complete the job. Maybe on the second one.

Instead I used standard ¾” wide hardwood strips as that was what I had on hand. They look pretty good and have some nice flaws in the woodgrain.

The dimension of the planks was almost exactly 200 mm. In order to speed up the cutting process I strapped several of the 24” long pieces together and cut them with a crosscut saw and a miter box leaving them a bit long in order to achieve a tight fit using my disk/belt sander I got at Harbor Freight to adjust their length.

There are still some small details left to add like decals which I will have to make up myself, scaling up the 1/35th scale decals that came with the SSYMS Sabre kit I purchased.

Also painting is soon to be addressed, I had planned on painting everything black but I read these rail cars were sometimes red or gray. I am undecided, I may paint the bed black and the bogies dark gray. I have not considered red as an option, as in wartime I am betting they would not have stayed red for long as it is not a very good camouflage color.

I am planning on staining the planks for the rail car as I believe they will look better because it will show the variation in the wood and hold up better with them stained rather than painted.

The next big step is to complete the railway, I believe I have printed enough of the hold down plates for the track it is just a matter of cutting the ties/sleepers and bonding them to the plates

As you can see everything will be attached for display on a four foot long board/shelf that will be portable for me to take to shows and my tank club meets. I still may print some more ties and hold down plates I only have about 22 and I need about 26 more to finish it up.

The photos taken are from an event this past weekend, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association First Florida Chapter invited my local Tank Club “Bay Area Blitzkrieg” to give a demonstration for the attendees. It was well attended and I think we caught the imagination of many of our audience especially as some of them were unaware that these Radio Controlled armored vehicles were available, we handed out club business cards and let many of the children (young and old) drive some of our tanks.

Thats one amazing piece of work , well done.

I was just thinking about this the other day. So great to see an update!

Shark27 11-17-2021 08:14 AM

Panther,
Yeah it is almost done, then I have to finish the second one for Danville, it is not too far behind this one.
I think that, that one will be for static display as the "G" scale track is very narrow and it may be too unstable to run on their circuit especially loaded. It could be used as a goal for a battle where one team has to get to it and drive one tank on board to win kind of a capture the flag type scenario.
But they can use it in whatever way they wish.
Were you able to get to Danville this past weekend?
Steve

ronnie42,
Thanks!

Shark27 11-18-2021 08:57 PM

RC Bob,
Thanks!
The Panther F just fits.
Unfortunately I do not have transport tracks for either my Tiger 1 or my King Tiger, but I will still display them on board, the Germans did not always remove the battle tracks when transporting those tanks, unless it was necessary because of narrow tunnels, bridges or other rail traffic.

Will,
If you plan on doing one in the future you might verify the curves on the garden railway you already have are not too small a radius for this car. Taking in to account that this scale is somewhat larger than "G" scale 1/16th vs 1/20th,1/22.5, 1/24th "G" scale (pick one) and due to the length of the bogies and the fact they are nestled under the bed frame they have a somewhat limited travel and cannot negotiate tight turns.
I haven't done the math or laid it out on a large enough area to see how tight a radius it can actually negotiate. I looked up "G" scale turn radius and it looks like 24" to 44" is the range offered, the larger should work fine, not sure about the smaller.

I have picked up some "G" scale track for testing, I'll let you know what I find out when I layout some curve sections.

One other thing if you were to run one of these on your Garden railway, make your coupler hook out of brass or some other metal, as it will have all the stress on it once the car is loaded with a 10 to 20 lb. RC Tank, the mount should probably be OK.

Update!

I have finally finished the SSYMS 80 ton Plattformwagen, more or less. That is unless I decide to add some more detail parts to it (maybe the air couplers (printed) or steps on the sides, which I probably won’t print I would likely make them out of brass for durability).
I was able to stain the wooden planks, the plan was to use a dark brown stain and then a lighter gray stain over that to simulate what real wood does over time, just like the deck on the back of the house I live in does.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...09ad5ad1ff.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...ac418b915c.jpg
The brown stain was a little dark, but it was what I had on hand. I think it turned out okay. The gray stain added a nice grayish tint to the brown.

Afterwards I decide to switch my idea of painting colors for the main components, I decided to paint the bed dark gray and the bogies in semi-gloss black, at some point I will probably weather the bogies with some rust from the rail dust.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d79246df56.jpg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...dc52565df1.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...21cca2e950.jpgBefore painting I decided to add a little more detail to the sides of the bed, since it is pretty devoid of any detail.
Originally I had decided not to add these, but there are some levers surrounded by a raised edge on both sides of the real rail car. Mine are just a representation, if I made them exactly prototypical they would certainly get broken off during handling as they do stick out somewhat.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...0f68314845.jpg
Some of the 1/35th scale kits (Trumpeter) have them incorrectly located in the wrong position. The Sabre kit I purchased as a reference has them in the correct position as shown in pictures of the real wagon.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...2f139ff932.jpgOne other feature I added which I had previously mentioned was the secondary coupler that was on some of the SSYMS rail cars for their extra heavy loads. I have designed these and printed them out. It looks like they would have only had them on one end of the car, which is all they would have needed, as they were easily transferred from one end to the other.
While I was at it I modified the hook slightly and the dog bone connection arms that are part of the couplers. Which is why the couplers are missing from the bed photos. here are the new couplers separately.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...20645076f8.jpg
Probably the last detail I will add for sure is the decals, I have the original 1/35th scale decals I will need to scale up and print or have stencils made. All that is left is to assemble the track sections, mount them and the end stop to the board, I may decide to print more ties as I like the look of the woodgrain ones I have already printed.
I still have some detail painting to do on the SSYMS. Undecided on the color for the ramp either dark gray or black suggestions?

On to a related side project. I had to wait for the weather to cooperate in order to stain and paint the SSYMS rail car in the meantime I was working on this other project.

Since I last posted here I had purchased the Sabre 1/35th scale SSYS 50 ton Plattformwagen kit, this flatbed rail car was used to transport the German Panther tanks as well as Panzer II and Panzer IV tanks as well.

Because some of the parts were similar to the SSYMS wagon I though this rail car would go much faster. I was right, it did but I did have to design a new two axle bogie, using the kit parts as a guide and some pictures I found on line I was able to cobble one together.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...034543ff50.jpg

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...767fc2194a.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...0ee9f23ced.jpg

The bracing system of the SSYS bogie is quite different than the SSYMS bogie, but I was able to use one of the braces (reworked to length of course). I was also able to reuse the axle boxes and rework the leaf springs. The axles and wheels are all the same as on the SSYMS.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...1a15f9f94f.jpg

The bed parts are all new built from scratch using the Sabre kit as a guide, I made the parts similar to the kit parts but not exact. For example the cross beams underneath the bed are the same thickness as the “I” Beams in the kit but mine are solid pieces and the connection point to the bed is wider that the Sabre kit parts, I did this for strength for the weight of my RC tanks, even my Tamiya Panther weighs 13 lbs.

I did not plan to do a thread on the SSYS rail car, (it just kind of happened) as most things have been covered already, if anyone is interested I can start one and post the CAD pictures of the new components I created or just add them into this thread.

Let me know what you think.

Just in case there are any moderators watching, this is a perfect example of what I don't like about the new software upgrades. I used to be able to copy a quote and then go into that quote and remove all the photographs so that the people reading afterwards didn't have to scroll through all that other stuff just to see the text. Unfortunately, that function has disappeared and now when you make a quote you have to take it as it is and there are no changes. It would be really great if the IT people could figure out how to give us that function back so that when we make a quote we can edit out the unnecessary stuff and just keep the stuff that we want. Just a thought, sorry to hijack.

Thanks Will! I have looked at many of your 3D designs, I know you certainly appreciate the work involved in designing and printing functional 3D objects. I think the people that just design objects just for rendering for on line use have it easy they do not have to actually make their designs function, they just have to make them look good.

Crius,
I agree having all the content in a reply is so redundant, if we have already seen the picture why do we need them again?
I guess the workaround is to just cut and paste the text you want in the reply and put quotes around not as easy but it works.
You would think it is in their best interest to not have all the photos reposted due to the amount of storage required for all those redundant photos. Between all the forums here and all the reposted photos that has to add up to quite a bit.
Steve

Crius 02-25-2022 01:27 AM

| guess what adds insult to injury is that it used to be really easy to remove the photos. You would select a quote and it would come up as you entered your reply and the photos were very easy to identify and all you had to do was highlight and delete the photos, which was even easier when there were several in a row like that. It's just one more example of how "upgrades" just make things worse. I mean, just look at what they've done to our tank classified section. It used to be pretty good, now it's all but un-useable, thanks to an "upgrade". Don't get me wrong, the photos are great and your work is incredible, but having to scroll through everything you've already seen, just to hear someone say, "that's cool" would most likely even piss off the Pope!

Fortunately, in this case the photos are good enough that it's worth the aggravation. This really is a great project and I'm extremely impressed by your talent. Can't wait to see some more photos of it on display with the Panther.
