Want to hear a sad DT Tamiya Gepard Flakpanzer build story? First, DT's flakpanzer build solutions are fantastic.

About 3 months after finishing and setting up my DT custom one off Gepard Flakpanzer, I showed it to a local rc tank guy. He wanted to buy it then and there, just name the price he said.

I said NO. Six months later he asked again, still NO. Months later, he called and I gave him a price, a big go away number. The collector came back a week later with cash and my wife spent the money.

Sad story, told you.

Merry Christmas, John

Okay... been away for awhile so I am late getting here.

What was the "go away" price? :p

Looking good Ethan... nice light!

Ethan, Awesome light solution, thank you for the "how to". John

After some delay I have done some more work to get this kitty off the shelf. Replaced smoke launcher brush guards with steel wire. Did work on the specific commander's sight and wind sensor.

So I skipped ahead a bit and got the project running for battle (night) and fell into the trap. Everything was running fine, working like a charm and then I put a coat of paint on it…. Near disaster. Recoil bunched up and caused three shaded of hell in the turret. I got it all straightened out but the moral of the story…. give yourself tolerances for paint. Remember tamiya traverse likes a nice smooth surface.

I used Tamiya desert yellow as a base and painted the camo with Vallejo OD primer and Flat Black. I also had to change airbrushes mid stream and on the eve of battle it makes everything s l o w down.

So I got it on the field and it handles great. Paint is rough but workable but that searchlight is a trip. I meant bright! More detail to follow but enjoy for now.

I like the camo a lot!!! and you know how I am about Leopards and camo.

The light is cool too, but that camo...

the tamiya FO gearboxset of the leopard 2 are fitting withing the leopard 1a4 chassis , you just have to drill the four homes for fastening it
i have used tamiya fo sherman motorboxes for motorised one of my 3 leo 1a4
carson DKLM rc have also very good low motorboxes for it

I explored the Leo 2 setup but I stuck with basically a Jagdpanther setup as I was trying to keep this project affordable. I managed to get the kit with the metal tracks for $400 and the Tamiya MFU/DMD pair for around $200. Most of the sundries came out of my parts box.

It is essentially a show tank that I will run infrequently. I still battle mostly with my Jumbo and Easy Eight. I try to spread the wealth but one only has so much time at an event!

Put the kitty back on the bench for a paint touch up. Enjoy.

Nice looking tank

One tip for running external lights etc, is magnet wire. It is coated so it is insulated and of course it is very fine. You can run a twisted pair of wires and easily hide them in some small wire insulation so it looks like conduit, just like the prototype

I did this on my Crowmell to hide the wires to the LED in the searchlight. You have to just burn off the insulation with a match on the ends you want to solder.

Cheers

Thanks for the ideas. Everything on this project is more or less off the shelf. Bear with me if I cut some corners.

On the concept of resources becoming available AFTER a project comes to life.... Just found a link to this reference book..... DOH

"..It puts the lotion in the basket...."

A late model modification on these vehicles was a large external basket set for stowage and I couldn't resist the challenge. I found some screen repair patches for the mesh and good ol' evergreen angle stock. They are rough but will do the job. I had a hard time sizing them from reference photos so in the end I went with best guess. I also realized the need for different antenna brackets so in for a penny... in for a pound.
