I use 3n'1 oil. Stays on and doesn't harm plastics or even rubber. I wish I could answer your question about "lithium grease", though.[:@] The problem I've had with ceramic grease is that it dries out.

so your saying to use lite oil and not to use grease in gearbox

I use it on all Tamiya tank. I drive them hard and good ol' 3n1 works great!! Stays on doesn't dry up and disappear.

"3n1" is available, at least in the states, in any hardware store or grocery market. It's an American institution. Really effective and temperature resistant. There is a mild odor that's distinctly "3n1". It's like a stronger version of trumpet valve oil.

Petroleum Distillates? That can't be good for plastics, could it.

RE: TAMIYA OWNERS ONLY THREAD

I've used it to lubricate the gearboxes during the past two years. No problems so far. I woudn't use it to oil the wheels or anything like that (Pershing plastic and bearing oil issue).

I just wondered. I think some paints have p.d. in them, so it must not be that bad for them.

Thanks sownare i think I will look for it here, maybe I can use a brand of sewing machine oil locally here if I cannot find that oil.

Another good brand of oil and grease that is plastic safe is made by LABELLE.It can be found at your local hobby shop in the model rr section. Most if not all of their oils and greases are plastic safe.I have used them on plastic many times with no problems. They are also sold in some good sporting good stores as they are also marketed for lubing fishing reals. The 3 in 1 oil is not safe on all plastics.I have had it cause one type of plastic to crack after awhile. If I remember right it was styrene that did not get along with it.The cracks showed up after about 3 or 4 months after adding the oil.

RE: TAMIYA OWNERS ONLY THREAD

Hi all, newbie here from over the pond. I have a Tamiya King Tiger FO. I have a few tubes of silicon grease and have been thinking of using that on my gearboxes. Silicon grease is supposed to be inert isn't it, therefore shouldn't affect plastic or anything else for that matter. Any thoughts on the use of this lubricant or has anyone used it and had any problems?

Les.

Speaking of model railroads, I wonder if anyone dare put pearl drops tooth polish in the gearbox to break it in and burnish the gears?

Check sewing machine stores for 3in1 if you can't find it in local hardware stores.

Ron

I have read about using pearl drops tooth polish to break in gear boxes and burnish the gears a number of times in the rr magazines. A model train builder I have talked to here says he has done it and it does work.I cannot say as I have never tried it.I am happy with letting the gears break in the old fashioned way.Being as it is still talked about in the model rr circles I guess there is a good chance it does work.

Wayne,

I've seen it mentioned too, but never really tried it on the locomotive gears. When I built the Leopard, I actually used the half hour system( forward and backwards) on the gear box and both motors and greased it again before even installing it in the tank. Have no idea if it actually helped any. Couldn't have hurt tho'.

:Dgreetings tankduel some answer to some of questions i do not think that hl will take over tamiya just for the simple thought tamiya has been making 1/16 scale tank kits for a long time and mite i add very good quailty kits at that!. as to the new models to come i could not say but quailty takes some time and produce all parts components up to tamiya standards so that we as tankers will be very pleased at thier work on tank kits!:) DAN
