SU-122 in progress

1 Attachment(s)
Next 1/16 project, a SU-122 converted from Trumpeter/WSN with scratchbuilt fighting compartment and Tamiya guts. Plan is to have it done for Tamiyacon 2007. I am using a Tamiya 1/35 version as a template and it will have Pershing guts. Can anyone say white wash?

Check out www.desertarmor.com for the latest on this project.

More work done on glassis and gun mount. Fighting compartment attached to upper hull. Started work on recouperator housing and the gun itself. Eventually the vehicle will need Pershing guts.

Looking good so far. What are you doing with the T-34/76 turret? I'll take it if you don't want it.

More work on gun mount and the gun itself. I am getting close to the point of needing that Pershing.

I am really impressed with this so far.
Looking forward to more.SU-122 is a great looking tank, looks powerful.

Are you planning on buying a complete pershing and just using the electronics,or are you going to buy them seperately?

Good luck with the rest of the project.

Cheers.

RE: SU-122 in progress

I have plans for the spare 76mm turret, maybe a gunboat or an armored train.

I will buy a complete Pershing in order ot have all the parts I need and start another project later.

There is a 10% chance of rain for Saturday's battle day, most likely gone by late morning. 30% chance of rain Friday but we could use some rain to help clean up our terrain. It will be brisk out there so bring a coat or two.

Several cosmetic additions to my scratchbuilt conversion. I added the battle system reciever mount to the the upper hull and added the main hatch. The hinges are not exact but they should be beefy enough to avoid repetitive breaking. My recoil and elevation units are here and my next big step is the gun mount pivot.

A few more details added so I took so more shots. For some reason all the pics on this post are dark. Sorry about that.

That looks pretty awesome. I was wondering what you mean by 'ready for Tamiyacon' though.. since all the Tamiyacon entrants have to be Tamiya kits?.. unless you just mean to use it for the R/C demo? Anyways, Tamiyacon has been moved to Fall, so you have plenty of time.

bhop73,

You nailed it with running it on the armor demo field. Technically, while the "Demo" is going on, all the tanks need to be close to stock Tamiya products. The offical demos last about 1/2 - 1 hour each day. The rest of the time its "run what you got". That means highly modified Tamiyas, Bandai's, WSN's, and scratch builts.

Ethan / doubleaz has put together a great video on the DAK website. His site also has a lot of great photos.

(it takes a while to load but is worth it - broad band only)

If you want some more TAMIYCON shots, check out our website so you can see how the tank battles have grown over the last three years.

Interior work almost complete. I figured out the gun pivot and elevation. Wiring almost done, you wouldn't believe how much room there is.

Ethan,

That looks awesome! I noticed you're using a Futaba receiver, so no DX6 for this one?

Will we see it on the 25th?
The AEC III will be there with live ammo this time. (if all goes well)

Futaba receiver is a loaner from my T34/76. I have a BR6000 on order. Right now the SU-122 is running and will be ready to fight.

Here are some progress shots....

Probably the best compliment for it.. it looks like it came like that, not that you fabricated most of it. Awesome work mate!

Very Nice Mod.

My second T-34 arrived last week, and I have ordered the SU-100 conversion from BYA. This conversion was of great interest to me, and you did a great job.

Thanks for sharing.

PS

Where did you get the photo etched grill from?

We are painted! I plan to add markings and white wash the tank eventually. I will run it as is for SCAT's battleday next week to iron out any technical issues before the final detailing.
