The "search" feature is your friend. Look in this and other tank forums, you'll find hundreds of photos and "how to" guides.

Zimmerit was a cement-like paste applied to German armor in WW II for protection against magnetic mines. Any reference books on German Panzers will show it on many tanks, mostly Pz IV, Panther and Tiger family. There are a couple sites in Germany and England that sell the zimmert kits that you can glue on to the tank. Otherwise you can use modelling paste and smear it an yourself, then use a screwdriver blade and make the marks. I just got one of the stick-on kits in the mail yesterday and it looks nice, but haven't had time to put it on yet. Here's a couple photos of a 1;35 Tiger 1 model with paste and screwdriver work.

Here is a picture of my Tiger. I used Tamiya putty and a comb. The putty is a solvent and softens the plastic and the comb scores the zimmeritt pattern. Most like their zimm to be more obvious or "stand-outish" than this though.

Welcome to the boards. Most guys here expect you to do a basic search before asking questions like this. Some topics have been covered ad nauseum.

Keep in mind that not all German tanks wore Zimmerit, so it's worth doing some research on the particular tank you plan to model after.

"Search" is your best friend. "Research" is your second best friend.

Not meaning to toot my own horn, but I've just gone through the process. I did the following:

1. read a TON and I mean a bunch, I wanted it as accurate as I can for now and it still is not there (cupola etc)
2. searched on here looked at what everyone else is doing done etc....
3. I also searched google for tips on applying.
4. found 2 books to be very helpful, both ordered on Amazon, Tiger1: on the western front Tiger1: on the eastern front, there are other good books as well. These are PACKED with photos on a per unit basis.

I've outlined how I did mine in the following thread, not the only way, maybe not even the best way but found it to work well.
