pscartozzi,
I e-mailed you offline about helping get you a set of those wheels, did you get my e-mail? If interested please e-mail me back. Failing that, if you choose to go with plastic disk inserts, you could always get Grant Line bolts of the right size and glue them on. Definitely would be trying to cut them out. Check out their augmentables section at:

Very nice. Great spot for the on off switch. I will probably have my charging jack at this location as well. I have the Resin casting all sanded and fitted to the hull. Nothing special or different then what you have already done. I am leaving the front fenders on my version though.

Streetsquid, I did get your e-mail and thanks for the very generous offer. I still might have to take you up on it. I haven't cast parts before and I'm not sure I want to start with a 'needed' wheel.:D So I might try this quickly, that way, if it turns out decent there will be a technique that a bunch of us could use. We'll see.
Thanks again for the offer,
Perry

Here's what my wheel work has yielded. Not a perfect match but it's pretty easy and realitively free. First wheel took a night but now I have a template for the disc and I think I can make one in about an hour. I think the quality will improve as I go. In the pic's the center cap is not pressed in all the way yet, just mocked up till the wheel is mounted.

First I ground off all the support ribs with a dremel. Took a while at first but you develop a technique pretty quickly. Had to do this to get the disc to have the correct amount of set-back. Cut the disc form out of .015" Styrene. CA'd it and had to use a little Tam putty on the gap. Bought some styrene hex rod and shaved off 8 bolt heads. CA'd them on. Painted it Russian Armor Green. A little weathering will clean up some of the imperfections nicely.
I'm pretty happy with it.

In case you want to try it here is the template I used. It should print to scale, cut it out and try it!

Thats excelent.Thanks for sharing.
I would think CA (I'm assuming thats superglue?) would do it.Be interesting to see how you go about the grills.
Keep us updated.

I got the grills in. As you can see I totally F'ed it up. [sm=drowning.gif][sm=drowning.gif][sm=drowning.gif][sm=drowning.gif]The CA - cyanoacrylate (super glue) wicked into all the wrong places. I offer this ugly pic in humility to show the newbies we all make mistakes as we try to expand our capabilities. Never be ashamed of your work, just never make the same mistakes twice.

I'll have to pull a Turtle (obscure reference) and stare at it a while and figure out how to fix it now:D

OK, paid my penance. Tried a bunck of weathering but it just looked wrong so I peeled off all the grills and scraped off the hardened glue to bring back the original profile. Then I used thick CA and made a picture frame of glue with none in the center. Glued on new grills and they turned out way better. Used some black then rust, then flat earth washes. Phew.

Well I think I am done! At least for now. I need to develop the gun but I will save that for another day. I finished off all the wheels and painted the lower hull Soviet armor green. Made up a cable and added all the little bit's and pieces. Made a stencil and airbrushed on the identification number. That's all for markings. Some tanks are really overdone in my opinion. First time I used my airbrush. Also taught myself how to apply the washes last night. This is the first model I have ever painted and weathered so I'm pretty happy with it.

Nice looking SU, considering the amount of tanks and tank vs tank battles you'd think we would see more russian armour.

Perry,
Just curious did you ever get beyond just mocking up the gun? I'm finally back working on the SU-85 (WSN/Trumpeter?Tamiya) build, and I'm curious if you added elevation and traverse ( for lack of a better term, actually about 10 degree of left to right movement) and recoil. If you did would you mind posting how you did yours. Imperial Modelbau instructions don't exactly give you a clear picture, and I don't read German. Quite honestly I'm not even sure my instructions are complete, how Many pages did the SU-100 kit come with?

Thanks a million!

Craig

RE: SU-100 Build Thread

Just an FYI, the SU-100 and T-34/85 shared both types of wheels. Obviously the ones Perry has on his are more common for the SU-100 and the stock wheels that came on the WSN T-34/85 are more popular, but both have been photographed with each using the 2 types of wheels.

So the answer to jonasvem question is yes to the T-34/85 using that type of wheel too.

BTW, looks great Perry!
