hey guys,i enjoy looking at all the finely detailed armor here,and i know it takes alot of hours to do.i was looking for a simple german camo pattern that would look good on my king tiger tank.i am currently in the procces of stripping this tank for the third time.i am using a badger a.b. (external mix)and compressor with reg. & moisture trap.,and tamiya acrylics.is this possible or should i upgrade my airbrush before i try again.any help here would be great.thanks

thanks wackywheelz,that's a nice poster.would different angles of these also be avaible,also i noticed that the tamiya red brown seems to not be red enough compared to others tanks& pictures.is there a way to correct this(add some red)or would you use something different altogether?thanks for the help.

I tend to like the model master paints better than tamiya they flow better for me and dry dull as tamiya dries to glossy.... I use the water clean up model master series.

are those enamel based,also what parts ratio do you mix those at for the psi your useing ,thanks.

Hi they are water base paints and a good rule of thumb on airbrushing your paints should be thinned to be as thin as a milk for a good start. .... you can thin it like milk or a little thinner and airbrush from 20PSI to 50PSI lower PSI = thinner paint for fine detail less over spray.

thanks,do use a "blackwash"to bring out fine details,&if so what methods have left you with the best results?do you haze the entire model with you base color after completing the camo pattern to tone the colors down?i've read about this practice but have never tried it.thanks for taking tme to answer my questions.

Hi I use feild drab and mist it very lightly and heveier in certain arias to make it look dusty with dirt.....and hit the road wheels heavy with it...theres a lot you can do you just have to play around with it.

thanks again,i think i may do some fine detailing work until i aquire the funds for a better airbrush.just one more question,if i use model putty to apply a zimmerit coating would this be hard to remove if i decide i don't like it later on(after it has dried)?thanks again for you time.

never used it but i think once you use that stuff it will be almost impossible to get it all off.

Hi Wacky or anybody that may know I was looking at the paint Schemes it shows a King Tiger in . Afrika Mustard or the yellow base color was there a real king Tiger that was that color any body know the number of it if it was in service where. It must be 507 but not sure is that it?

There was 1 KT with a Porsche turret that was in dunkelgelb (RAL 7028) only, that was the first one. All the rest were camouflaged in various patterns.

There were several units that had plain Dunkelgelb non-zimmerited production turret Kötis by the end of the war, Schwere Panzer Abteilungen 503, 507 and 509 had them, and there is a well known Panzer Lehr (Porsche turret) zimmerited Köti, turret number 02, that fought in France.

I use mainly tamiya acrylics, for the reason that Tamiya provides the largest range of detail colors and the cheapest dollar per volume paint.
Of course, there are several good brands out there for your selection and experiment.

still has the tracks and some tools to paint up and the final weathering.
By the way, this KT is all hand painted......because I can't afford an airbrush :(

Thanks guys thought I would like to have my King Tiger Dunkelgelb. I learn something ever day on here never knew Dunkelgelb was the base color. Mine is not a Porsche turret but still going make it into the 02 tank.

very nice,very realistic.i don't think i would ever be able to match that.i was looking for a well cared for appearance.there are so many patterns to chose from!doe's anyone know where i can find more german camo info?thanks.

I didn't know there was more then 1 non-zimmerited or even un-camouflaged KTs, never seen pictures of them. Interesting, though most of my research has been confined to North Afrikan and Initial Production Tiger H1s.

Dunkelgelb was not the only base color. There are several websites that explain when Olive Green (RAL 6003) was to be used as the base and a time before that where the red oxide primer shown through as a replacement for RAL 8017. A quick google using these RAL numbers will light the way.

I do not agree that Tamiya has the best selection of acrylic military paints. I think Xtracrylix and Polly Scale do. I used Polly Scale, Tamiya and Model Master since I was a kid and when I re-entered the hobby. Now I prefer Xtracrylix and Polly Scale as they don't smell, thin great with distilled water and have a large selection of colors available. Another thing is that they're not Tamiya acrylics! Too many tanks look the same because they all use the same paint. They're not spot on matches either. You see a lot of mixing to match historic color swatches whereas some other brands are even closer.

my local hobby shop stocks the tam. acrylics,and i've gotten somewhat used to air brushing them,so thats what i will use.has anyone added a little red(xf-7) to the red brown(xf-64) to make it look more accurate?if so what ratio gave the best results?also has anyone made scratch-built track hangers?thanks for the help guys.

Do you have reference pics of those King Tigers that had no camo color near the end of the war? Even the first five King Tigers ever built (your color plate for instance) that were assigned to the Pz. Kop. 316 had some sort of crew-applied camouflage.

I don't there there ever was a non-camouflaged King Tiger. With constant air threats, camo is kind of a necessity.

Well, in my research I've learned not to exclusively rely on plates as many of them have been found to be innacurate. I couldn't find the above tank but my brain is a bit groggy and wracked by this never-ending flu!
