pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

I bought a HL snow leopard a month ago and so far I have glued up the slipper clutches with epoxy resin (plastic gear boxes) and removed the side skirts and front fenders.
I am thinking of putting in the El Mod gear, but at the moment finances prevent this.
this tank has a rx 14 board in it so it will be easier to fit the El mod gear (no soldering)

a picture showing the tank without the side skirts and fenders the second picture is one of the slipper clutch glued up

Great job on your initial effort there. Nice to see someone modifying the standard nylon gearbox. Looking forward to further updates to your build.

What are you going to do next?

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

the next thing is to install the Elmod gear to run with the HL boards, as finances permit, I cannot see the point of throwing away a transmitter when it works OK and adding the expense of getting another one and the receiver as well

You can run El Mod with stock HL electronics and radio. I do with my Tiger. Even proved the concept of using 480 motors with the Afterburner through HL electronics.

Are you going to keep the airsoft gun? If not, you may want to consider lengthening the gun barrel by 30~33mm. It'll make the Pershing looks MUCH nicer...

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

Calvino, I am keeping the airsoft gun, because I do not want to disfigure the tank with the IR receiver on the turret, also because I have no one near where I live that I know of to have a IR battle with. I am going to modify the elevation spiral in the turret because I don't think the main gun depresses enough

Can't the airsoft function be retained if the barrel is corrected to scale length? I thought this had been done before by using a pipe cutter to only cut through the plastic, adding a section of plastic tubing for the barrel sleeve and gluing the piece in (with sanding and putty to blend the seams in). The newly extended barrel would have a short section near the muzzle where the BB is not supported by the actual barrel.

I figured this would not hamper the shooting and the BB should make it out of the barrel just fine.... (?)

Are there other considerations that might inhibit the airsoft gun?

yes it can be retained if the both the inner and outer barrels are lengthened at the same time or if you do not lengthen the inner barrel you have to bore out the muzzle brake to enable the BB's to shoot out of the barrel normally

Brel found one of Pattoncommanders Pershings this is his M45 and clearly shows the skirts lifted for use as storage

Bill hope you don't mind me pinching your picture[:o][:o]

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

thanks Rob, how come it has a shorter gun barrel than normal

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

The M45 had a 105mm howitzer (like the Tamiya Sherman). If you search around, Bill (Pattoncommander) has posted a fair amount of info on it.

I have a Pershing here that I need to get on with converting - thanks for posting that FV432, I feel a burst of motivation comming on! :D

No probs guys glad to get the glue flowing LOL

Pattoncommander sorry again for nicking your pic from the gallery[sm=red_smile.gif] ;):D

just ordered the metal track upgrade set from blueslateman on the evil bay.

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

you gonna upgrade the springs to PZIII ones to make them stiffer?

brel 08-06-2008 03:49 AM

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

I did not know that the springs wanted upgrading, please can you tell me where I can get some from

fv432 08-06-2008 04:11 AM

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

if you get the replacement PzIII springs from the blueslatesman
They are a direct swap out for the pershing springs and stop you getting a saggy butt when you put the metal tracks on
the procedure is the same as my bulldog

but check your pershing first though as one of mine had thicker stronger springs on the four corners so it might not be needed;):D

they are real easy to spot as the coils look thicker;);):D:D

I have took the Elmod booster and TLS units out of the tiger and fitted them to the Pershing putting the booster where the smoker was and the TLS under the rear deck next to the turret motor on the RH side
I will replace the plastic gear boxes after they have broken whilst running with the metal tracks that I am expecting shortly

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

I got the tracks this afternoon and have just fitted them and the metal drive sprockets, the metal track look a lot better than the plastic ones. oh why oh why do the makers insist that the drive sprockets are a nice and shiny silver colour when the rest of the road/return wheels and idlers are painted green like the rest of the tank, got to get some paint to paint the drive sprockets to match the rest of the tank.

Harquebus 08-07-2008 01:05 PM

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

Well, that one's a no-brainer; it is because it's just bare metal. I wouldn't want them to paint it green. It's better that I do it meself so I get the shade right.

A better question would be why are the plastic OEM sprockets painted silver (leading one to think they are made of metal)?

brel 08-07-2008 01:16 PM

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

yes they are bare metal and a nice silver as well, why can't they treat them with what ever they used to dull the colour on the tracks, would the vinegar trick work on the sprockets like some folk have used on their tracks

Harquebus 08-07-2008 01:30 PM

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

Don't know why they didn't so that is a good question. The vinegar trick should work but in the interest of haste, I'd be wanting to coat it with a good metal primer and take it from there.

I wish this metal they used would rust. Wouldn't that be nice?

Never seen pictures of a tank with rust on it in service, all the rusty tank had been shot up during combat or target practice or were in the process of being cut up of at a metal breakers (scrap yard)
the only rusty bit on a tank would be the exhaust system(muffler)

RE: pershing M26 (hl Snow leopard)

The Pershing doesn't need upgraded springs. The BullDog does. The Pershing has the 6th pair of road wheels and HL used the thicker springs on the first pair and last 2 sets of road wheels.

Besides, I haven't found a way to remove the Pershing's shocks as the top mount is underneath the return roller bracket.
