JUMBO Build

1 Attachment(s)
Alright gang, I have put my vehicle decisions up to a vote before but this time I am taking matters in to my own hands and proceeding with my JUMBObuild whether you like it or not! As we gear up to more allied heavies (KV I and II) Iwill keep busy with the spare parts I have.

First step, make the armor for the hull and correct the back deck.

For my full build progress, tryhttp://web.mac.com/ethandunsford/DAK_PROJECTS/JUMBO.html

Oh no, not ANOTHER Sherman Ethan! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif How many will that make after completing this one? It's all good though, more green targets....especially for my Panther! (haven't started yet, waiting for parts). Have you decided which unit it will belong to? Great job so far! Can't wait to battle you. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif

Can't wait to see your D67403 Jumbo Turret!

You gonna model this one after "Cobra King"? She was first into Bastogne and recently discovered btw.

This build is like many of mine, a dream and a project. Ihave some spare Sherman parts from my many builds and I usually cobble them together into what I want to do next. My hybrid was like that in it was the sum of about three kits and left over electronics. I will probable steal the guts from my T-34/76 (waiting for KV-1 MFU DMD) and gearboxes from my El Elemain project.

For now I have attached the added armor and corrected the back plate to M4A3 style. After the plates were added to the rear I removed the radial engine deck to make room for my last BYA GAAEngine grilles.

Ihave an old tank workshop Jumbo as my reference, boy does that new one look nice! Ihave met Rob several times at IPMS events and I have tried to get him to dabble in 1/16 scale conversions. Maybe with the plethora of new Shermans out there he will feel the urge!

As per my build, Ibegan to build up the turret with all the left over two part epoxy putty I could find. I have some sculpy and bondo lined up. It takes time for the stuff to dry!

The easier portions of this build are the typical Sherman fixes common to Tamiya projects. The hatches, the handles, etc. On my hull I also began puttying the armor weld seams and replacing the engine deck.

This time around I opened the Driver/Bowgunner hatch with the thread technique. Results are really good!

Hatches now have handles. Engine deck in place.... with handles. Armor plate ground down with simulated weld detail (thanks squid for the help). Next step is the double thickness on the transmission cover. Iam laminating two of the Tamiya covers to simulate the pattern. The upper portion will require new bolt holes as the jumbo's thicker material had no lip like earlier version.

Back on this project after a few years.....

Junked the old BYA turret and used a surplus Mato and a load of Putty, CA, joint compound, and styrene to shape the new turret. This one will have a 75mm gun from my private stash. Metal sprockets, bogies, and duck billed track are on the horizon. I am now working on the Mantlet.

More to follow.

Dang that looks good! How did you build it? What did you use? Any chance of more photos of that grill?

RE: JUMBO Build

The engine deck is the old BYA resin with photo etch. I have actually replaced it with rod since. Working on my own resin solution as well.

I didnt go quite as far into proper detail on my Jumbo project, but I also made mine an up gunned version with the 30 cal in front of the TC's hatch with the 50 moved in front of the loaders hatch. i also have the 76 barrel(no muzzle break) as per Panther F. LOL.<div> Also have the aircraft 50 cal in the coax position.</div><div>http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/v...anJumbo024.jpg</div><div>http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/v...anJumbo022.jpg</div><div>http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/v...anJumbo019.jpg</div><div> I don't have the barrel yet as of time of these photos but it is in there now.</div>

Sorry for the delay in updates, our baby is due soon and guess who has 'honey due' lists that I never imagined. I have managed to squeeze tank time in and my excuse is 'clearing the bench' to make room! Tank now has MATO metal suspension, drive shafts to mate the MATO sprockets and Tamiya gearboxes. I modified a Mato trans cover to be the thicker version (still shaping) and the mantlet has been a brute force effort.

Pershing recoil unit, Pershing recoil stay, 75mm barrel is from the DAK private stock. Mantlet began as Mato with many layers of CA and Styrene. All sanded down repeatedly.

Elevation in simply the tamiya unit but this time it has standard RC arms from countless servo packs and no ball jounts. Metal elevation arm of course.

Believe you me that turret is a beatch. You are basically sculpting after a while. Mine still isn't right but its better than nothing! To back up a step I used the new mato metal bogies. First step was to cut off the mounting post evenly as I was attaching them to Tamiya's hull. You must also notch the plate that attaches the bogie to the hull. I then found some 4-40 bolts nuts and lock washers at the local ACE and tightened everything up.

I also tried the spring conversion on the bogie wheels. I even purchased a metal spring set from BOB/ETO. I confess I spent so much time on it I was forced to just bolt the other 5 on as is. I will get back to them later...

Looking good and I know all about sculpting. :D I started a turret and ran out of Tamiya Putty on a Tiff Williams turret. Never went back to it after starting "other" projects. Now after looking back I may just use the BYA turret. Who knows! :)

The little one (yes my first) is doing great and has adopted a fairly reasonable sleep schedule so daddy has actually been able to get back to the bench! (a few minutes at a time)

I had to buy another Pershing DMD and the usual dance begins with cutting the wires, adding dean's plugs and installing a customized charging system.

This time around I am priming and painting the hull black and then OD as a base coat.
