Tamiya Pershing in progress...

1 Attachment(s)
Guys, I decided to repaint the Pershing in the correct colors...and while I'm at it, might as well do it right. I am trying to replicate the "Fireball" from WW2 and t's coming along.I have never tried some of these techniques, but they seem to be working well for a first time. Thanks to all the guys who have posted their methods here and all who are helping me along with the build. I am enjoying this very much..

LOL, thank you very much. Man, I just finished the last of the welds and stood up and got a micro drill bit through my foot....OUCH!!!
As for teh pain, yes I looked at it and looked at it and then had enough. I wanted to model an actual tank for a change.

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

:DLooking GOOD!
Did you use tamiya paint on it?
Reason why i am asking tamiya pains always look to glossy?

yellowshaker 02-15-2010 09:43 PM

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

It really doesn't look glossy at all, but for some reason the camera makes it appear that way...Probably my uncanny ability to scvrew photos up!
But yes, I used Tamiya paints...I do plan to do some light weathering and probably a coat of window frosting to give it more of a dusty appearance.

shenlonco 02-15-2010 10:43 PM

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

I knew it I don't like the tamiya paints that much they are to glossy I use the testors water type paints they work great and they are very flat looking... I usally give the tank a hit of field drab around the bottom and tracks and fenders and mist the whole hull It gives it that dirty dusty used look.

Hey This is Steve from the NJ Fun run we had by me.

Nice work,

I like the vallejo line of paints, great stuff

Yellow maybe your shutter speed is too quick, either that or your finger was going a mile a minute when you stepped on the drill bit:D

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

Yea..seems something isn't quite right with the pics...the tank is actually very dull...idk, I'll have to get some help from a friend with the pics...</p>

shenlonco 02-16-2010 09:28 AM

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

Hi I used the tamiya paints you think they are dull but when you use others like the water type testors model master paints you then realise that the tamiya paints are much more glossy.

I'm honestly not sure as I have used Tamiya paints with all three of my tanks and the others look anything but glossy. I am plannign to get an airbrush soon, so i will try different types of paints and see what works best.

Your model looks awesome Yellowshaker. Please share your materials and technique for the roughened stipple effect, particularly on the turret. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Birt

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

Vollenc, I did a search on the forums and found some very interesting build for the Sherman and the Pershing tanks. There were a few diferent ways that I've seen to make the cast appearance look convincing. I went with a paint called Mr.Surfacer 500. All you do is take a brush and just dab it on and keep doing it in small areas at a time. This stuff dries really quick and the tapping motion of the brush gives the effect. I only used 1 coat on the turret and then did the front hull and a section of the rear hull. It looks quite convincing inperson...again my camera skills are limited to pushing the little button and hoping for the best.

Excellent tank Joe, very cool story behind this tank as well! I never knew that story, its cool to learn the history of their combat experience, and something on the Allied side for a change!

Thanks Blitz! Here's the latest photos. Still not finished...but getting there. Only one picture is close to the actual color...I am planning to buy a new camera. lol
I am working on fitting the brackets for the turret dust cover and installed the periscopes from eto. It's still coming along.

Yellowshaker,
You have come quit away since joining not too long ago. I envy your tanks. Where did you find that paint " mr surfacer". It does an outstanding job of simulating cast parts. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful repaint. I am doing the same tank, and have finished the construction and painting.
I did spring for the pewter A/M periscope guards, after deciding my handmade ones weren't as good.
What RC rig do you use? I have an older Futuba 4 ch,which uses a dedicated nicad pack for receiver power.
There isn't enough room in my hull for this set up.

Thanks alot 1Sgt. I am trying my best to learn as I go with each tank. If not for this site and the good folks here, I'd be lost.
Tankcarl, the Mr surfacer was purchased on ebay. Was not expensive and a little goes a long way. It is easy to work with and being that it is applied with a brush, ou have alot of control over where it goes.
As for the rc system I am running the Spectrum DX5E bought from rctankwars.com w/BR6000 receiver. It's a nice setup and I have no problems with it.
Do you have a diret link to the pic you were trying to post?

Your tank looks really good too! I'm working on a test fit for the dust cover and will try to post pictures if I get it together this evening. I'm also looking to install the Turnigy chip this weekend.

Thanks,
Don' t forget to drill a hole through the engine lifting hoist mounts on the loader's side of the turret.
And add a loop on the square pad above the side rack on the TC'c side of the tank.

I got the dust cover on, but not thrilled with it.I am going to look for a better material to use where I can get it to conform a bit better. it will do for now though.

Your Pershing looks good! If you ever find a suitable fabric for the dust cover, please share. :)

Thanks Googly...I will see what I can do with that.
As for the cover...yea, I used a plastic bag which is not exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to try it though. I saw a build on another forum and the guy said he used cling material of some sort...I am not sure what he meant though. The material has to be paint friendly and platic bags are not. Next shot will be with material from an old bandana.
I started on the weathering and accessories...

TankCarl 02-21-2010 11:12 AM

RE: Tamiya Pershing in progress...

@Googlydoogly.
Exactly. Those mounts were for a jib crane attachment,so engines and such could be self extracted. I am thinking a good material for the mantlet cover could be a fine weave cloth. Cnavas does look " coarse,so at 1/16th it would fill the bill. The only downside it would be stiffer,as the cloth is 1:1,and the scale of the tank is smaller.
I also added some tie down loops on the top of the rack,on the side of the turret.
