Tamiya Pershing Function Test
Hey folks, I've been testing the lower hull of my Pershing and every thing seems to function as normal except.......

Unlike forward motion, if I center the stick it smoothly stops. When the same movement is tried with reverse, it stops as if it locked gears. The only way I have been able to prevent it, is to ever so slightly return the gimble to the centerposition. Do I have my transmitter set wrong? Is there a tweaking I can do in the control board? I do have a Turnigy chip installed, this hasn't helped anything but greatly reduce the halt of the forward and reverse...but the reverse still comes to ascreechinghalt.....just takes longer for it to happen. you don't need that Turnigy Chip anyway are you shore your receivers adjustments aren't removed normaly they are about in the middle

Yeah, the gimbels are all center. Although the left side isn't self center at this point, until I send it in for the modification. All tread movement functions are on the right side any way. If you mean my Spektrum reciever..it has no adjustments. Any how, every thing works as it should so far. Just that abrupt stop concerns me a bit. The Turnigy chip may not be needed, but I do like how it works. As been stated by a few other, it may not be practical in a battle, so if that day ever comes...I may remove it. |

I believe that most new Tamiya tanks do that (except my KV-1) until the gearboxes get broken/worn in....I built a Tamiya Tiger I recently (don't drive it much) and it does the samething you describe. I just go easy on the reverse until it's broken in (I don't just release the stick). Hope this helps.

Tony , i dont know what radio you have but the left stick self centering mod is very easy. It is just a spring and arm .For Futaba radios Karen at the AFF has them. she usually sends enough parts to do 2 sticks. so if you lose a peice you'll have an extra. again it is very easy to do.

Thanks fellas, I guess once it fully built and given the amount of time driving, hopefully it clears up. Hate to see the motors strip because of it. I'll be able to compare it to the KT once that's built to and maybe isolate the problem if there is indeed a problem.<div>

Easy, just pm me your address again and I'll send you the plastic part and spring that's needed to make it self center! lol
Once you open it up, and look in it while fiddling with the gimble...it's self explanatory. Don't worry about opening it up either, hobby radios are designed to be opened up from the rear so the user can adjust the tension of the springs that control self centering. |

My Tiger did the same thing with the Turnigy installed. It would coast to a stop when centering stick while moving forward. While moving in reverse, after centering the stick, it would sharply stop like in your video. When I had the pots set so it would coast to a stop in reverse, it would mess up the foward motion. I'd push the stick full forward from a stop and it would take 2 seconds before the tank would even BEGIN to move forward. This was unacceptalbe for battling so I removed the Turnigy.
Without the Turnigy (but with 3:1 gear downs installed), I notice the Tiger seems to put more of a load on the drive motors to run in reverse when compared to forward. The transition is smoother moving out from a stop in forwards than in reverse. The minimum foward speed is slower than the minimum reverse speed too. I can really creep going forward, but not as much so in reverse. I have to move the stick further in reverse before the tank starts moving than I do in forward. I've checked all my trim and other digital settings on my radio, calibrated the DMD unit several times over and that is just the way it wants to run. Like Pzjgr said, I just slowly return the stick to center, I don't rapidly move it to center and that helps a lot. |

Only way I've been able to take the dang tank out of idle mode and fire the weapons. that Turnigy Chip what's that all about its not standard for tamiya i geuss?
I use a graupner MC10 at 40mhz with channel 56T Fmsss for my sherman and my KT's i haven't this drawback not with mine's what kind of receiver you have tony |

I have the chip in my HL/Tamiya Tiger and it does not seem too have that issue. Maybe something to do with the digital trims on the Spectrum radios? My Futaba's have the old slider style trims what do the Spectrums have/

Guys...this happens with out the Turnigy chip installed as I've said several times. I put that in to see if it stops it. I was just wondering if this was how the gear box was either designed, or a problem with my transmitter (if theres a setting that tells the receiver to quickly forward which causes a hard brake) or what. Seems that this is a common problem with new Tamiya's out of the box or so I've been told. So I'll give it a while to see it it stops on it's own.

Never had it on any of mine, and at the moment there seems to be about a dozen Tams staring at me in the Tank Fabrik. I use ancient Futaba Skysports. Mayhap it is your radio? And don't worry about toasting your TU. Won't happen.

BigTony, As I said, I have the DX5E and to get all the functons to work I also had to program it at half stick. I do not have the issue with my Pershing that you are having though. I have a Turnigy chip for mine as well, but decided not to install it because I planned to put it in the Tiger 1 at some point.

Thanks Joe, I'll reprogram the transmitter. I know I did fiddle with it when I first got the transmitter, before ever getting a Tam.
Thanks Bob, the TU seems pretty robust, so your likely right. It is annoying though and this will bother the heck out of me until I figure out what the heck is wrong! on a side note.....already lost a dang part! I'm so peeved. Totally forgot I didn't glue the machine gun in place for painting purposes...now the barrels gone. Had to order another machine gun baggy from, aaftankmuseum.It'll likely turn up when I least expect it, but seeing how the wife justvacuumedtoday and I dug through thevacuumbag for it......I doubt it.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...used_smile.gif |

I cannot for the life of me isolate what I did to make the forward drive smooth and the reverse come to a halt like that....but one things for sure, I won't be finding out now! Man, I've just about had it with this transmitter!!! Should have know better than to get something that I practically know nothing about. I've read over the manual and it's absolutely alien language. Anyone looking for a DX6i, hit me up!!

I just set up the DMD by Tamiya sticking (with my Futaba 6EX) but do not mess with the radio programming at all! Works just like a Skysport that way.

After getting some info from Bob about the Turnigy chip I bought one straight away for my tiger. I loved it so much i got one for my panther also. Yes it does make it a little challenging for IR battles but what the heck. Thats half the fun plus it is much more realistic to hear those big Maybachs howl before the tanks start moving, just like in real life. I love that chip. Coolest little upgrade you can make IMO.

Eric, I wish the DX6i were that easy. I have the right stick set to control both throttle and turning and I have to set the throttle trim back a bit, if not it continues to rev the tank.....but, Jimmy's links will correct this I'm sure. |
