RE: Starter boxes
because this hobby isnt cheap
i think because of their simplicity of starting an engine with it and that they last a long time, and when something goes bad on it you can always replace the part for cheap.

RE: Starter boxes
What is the advantage of a starter box? I can see the weight savings by removing the pull starter, but it seems like a big inconvenience. Is this more for racing?

RE: Starter boxes
There are a few advantages and disadvantages.
First they're easier to use than a pull starter
More Reliable
Time saving
Extrenally powered
Hassle free
No extra weight placed on the vehicle
Start your vehicle faster and more efficentally
And there are some more that im forgetting
Some of the disadvantages are
Expensive
They have to be lugged around.
Batteries = More cost
Charger for the batteries = more cost (if you dont have a charger)
If something goes wrong, its not that easy to fix
Kinda heavy
Have too carry 1 more item to a track (When its walking distance it matters)
And some more that im missing out on.
Tho these are pretty much the main advantages and disadvantages.

RE: Starter boxes
i used to always be against bump starters, but now i've gotten used to using it, i much rather it over a pull or hand held electric, it took me a while to get my box set up properly but once i did it's well worth it.
and a 12 volt gel cell is only around 12 volts, is much more powerful then two tick packs (even though stick packs supply 14 volts, they don't have the amps) and still fit in the box, and usually you can just use a car battery.

RE: Starter boxes
Starter boxes might be expensive, but they are worth it, especially if you race. You can use a back plate on the engine which is not added drag or weight from a one way bearing, making it faster and simpler. I do, however, love pull starters, no matter what anyone says. They are very convenient to have when you are bashing for example, but they often break, and fixing them is a pain in the a**. It is your choice as to what you get, but like I said, they are worth it, especially if you can find one for under $50.
