Required Servo Torque
 

I have searched through various forums trying to find out if there
is any information on required servo torque for 1/8 truggies. I am buying a
kit soon (haven't decided which one) and I wanted to figure what I need.

What is reasaonable amount of torque for a throttle servo?

Airtronics recommends a servo with 200 oz/in.

What is reasaonable amount of torque for a steering servo?

Airtronics recommends a servo with 85 oz/in.

Here are my thoughts. Please throw in your $.02

I would think that the steering servo needs to be stronger than the throttle servo.


Is there such a thing as too much torque? I would think excess torque might hard on the
steering components.

How important is servo speed?

Digital, while very nice, would seem to present a greater advantage for aircraft. There's a
great explanation in the aircraft forums.

I used a z590 for the steering once and it worked better then I thought it would, it has 85in/oz but now I use that as my throttle and the Airtonices 94359 for steering its got 200 in/oz of torque. but most people use a servo with 333+ in/oz like the JR9000T, Hobbico CS-170, JR 9100T, Hitech 5955, and theres another Hitech thats got 333 in/oz but can't remeber the name.

What i run in my matrix is a high speed throttle and a high torqe for my steering. Over 250oz is over kill for the steering. Are you going to be racing?

I don't think there is a limit on how much torque is too much when it comes to steering a truggy. The most powerful servos on the market have more than enough torque for steering. I would say no more than 200oz/in for throttle, more might cause damage, and it will make the radio tray flex. So anyway...150oz/in and up for steering, and really any reasonable amount of torque for throttle. I run a futaba S3305 servo for throttle, and it has plenty of torque (120oz/in) for brakes, and good enough speed (.20).

Im running a airtronics 94358 for steering and JR DS8550 for throttle on the st-r. Theres no need for such torque for throttle like what my servo has (188 oz ft torque) 100-150 is all thats needed. Steering is where you want the money to go for the servos if not both, I would say go buy a nice servo with no less the 200. I had the 94358 in my CRT once and it steered it with no problem.

200oz in or more for steering and your looking for speed on the gas/brake side. Fastest ones are in the .06 range. Metal gears for the steering servo too.

im using a servo in my jammin that has 333 oz. of torque with 6v. its from hobbico. its pretty nice.

remember to usualy the more force a servo has the more draw it has on the battery. probably 150oz steering and 75oz brake/throttle will be good for a buggy, add 50oz/ea for a truggy (bigger wheels, harder to turn and slow down). i have an ace 1013 in my buggy at 173oz and it is stronger than the servo saver, so over 300oz of steering doesn't make sense to me, unless you lock down the servo saver i guess. get the best servos you can afford cause if they go, your day is over, and don't be afraid to have some cheep spares too, maybe blue birds just in case.

I run blue birds in my maxx and buggy, if you have a radio with EPA then they're great servos for the money, but if your radio dosen't have EPA then they might burm up.

the Spektrum/JR Z590M is a good cheap servo, you can get two spektrum 590 for $25 on ebay new.

Stay clear of the Spektrum servos. I had one on my hyper 8 and one of the teeth for the throttle/brake broke and caused the buggy to be stuck in the full throttle position.My hyper 8 rb c5bb took off, as in gone, till it hit a 4x4 post. Bent the chassis, busted the tank and PMO.
On the bright side, it was a fast buggy.

Lol. I think it'd be a worthy sacrifice to throw yourself in front of that buggy.

I did that before with a 1/10th car that was running away and I will never do that again. and doing it for a 1/8th car? that will take a person to the hospitol.

Throw yourself on top of it?

You'd probably kill the spur gear, or whole clutch assembly, or even the engine, but it'd still be better than fixing the whole car. Lol.

I've ran Blue birds BMS-620 and 660, Spektrum 590, Airtronics 94359, and some stock rtr servos. and the only problem I've had, is on the blue birds, once because I was using a radio with out EPA so that was my falt, then on the other one the case broke (where the screws that hold the servo together and hold it in the car) but blue bird replace that for free. so I'm plaesed with them, for $24 and get 144oz and .10 or .13sec speed that pretty good. the 590 and the 94359 have only been ran for 2/3 of a gallon but no problems yet.

im runnin a airtronics 94758 for my throttle at 122 onces i think at .06 and a jr 9100t for my steering at 370 ounces.

why is it whenever there is a throttle problem or servo, or carb stuck or battery fell out, its always at wot? come to think of it its never happened to me where a servo dies or battery fell out in the middle of braking. well, once my reciever died after a jump and the buggy just sat there, so ok, 1 time, but all the others it was WOT!! things that make you go hmmm...

My Truggy steering servo has 403 oz of torque at 6V [>:] JR 8711 $140.00
Wheels turn and stay turned until I say different! :D
Just dunno if I should go with the JR9000S or the 8717 for the throttle/brake

I use spektrum Z590 servo for throttle and a JR650 servo 140oz or Hitec 645 ultra torque 140oz. for steering on all of my truggies with no problems at all.

Im using the JR 9000T 320 oz. of torque and had was having problems with the aluminum servo arm bending every time I raced. At first, I thought it was t-boned by another car on the track so I installed the plastic side guards to protect the arm. I raced it and once again, the arm was twisted. It turns out the the servo saver was too tight and the torque of the servo was bending the arm if I landed a jump crooked on the front wheels. I'm impressed that a years worth of beating that servo and it hasn't stripped out the gears. You really do get what you pay for.
