Esm p-39
Hi Jeff,
I remember you have said you've used the e-fite 160 in several of your birds. What props have you used? I have a ESM 3 blade spinner and can't find a ESM 2 blade spinner for the P-39. As I remember you used a 17/10 2 blade on 12S. Have you ever tried 3 blade props on your set up? I know they are not as efficient as 2 blade props. I was looking at the Master Airscrew 16/10 3 blade, but the Mfg says the largest hole in the prop hub is 10mm and my Tacon 160 has a 12mm drive shaft. Looking at other 3 blades, the price goes way up. My set up will be the Tacon 160 (equiv. to the e-flite 160) 12s and 120 amp esc. b Any experience you have had would be helpful.

Wayne: the 160s do well on 12S with a 17x8 prop. I used an MAS wood scimitar on mine. (Turnigy G 160) I get about 75mph, 20# plus thrust, and 7 or 8 minutes mixed on a pair of 6S 5800 Zippys in series. I got a 5" Airacobra spinner from a guy in Australia. It was about $160 including postage.

Hi Wayne as Mustang Fever points out the E-flite 160 has no issues with 12 S. I have a Turnigy knock off of the 160 on my T-28, I have put the MAS 16X10 on it and it works fine. I missed the memo on the 10mm max and reamed mine to 12, no issues so far. What I have seen is with the 3 blade initial acceleration is better, high speed end is worse, it has a lot of prop noise, it really does snarl, but as you pointed out the efficiency is not great. With the 12 blade and controlled use of throttle I can get 8 minute flights on 5800 or 6000 mah Hobby King packs. My ill fated P-39 came in at a portly 28 pounds and the 12S setup on the 160 with a 17X10 hauled it around fine, well until the elevator went away..... I say drill the MAS to 12 mm and put it on and try it.
Cheers

Rick,
Thanks for the info on the MS 16/10. I can see the shaft dia. restriction, if the prop was used on a gas motor. Since it will be electric, much less vibration and power pulse's. I'm getting a better feeling that the 3 blade MS 16/10 will work ok. I'm still looking for a 2 blade spinner as a back up. The custom one from Australia is a little pricey for me.
