The Zero and the Focke Wulf D-9.... great flying models.... the P-47 is a great model also. You have to be good to not tip the Mustang on landing every 10th flight, or more often.... and I only care about models, not how many people died flying the full size...

Hmmmm not so fast... Don't think Orville ever said that. He wasn't a bumpkin that left the industry and retired to the pasture only to be awakened by the 'horror' of the A bomb. He was very active throughout his life heavily involved in military projects, he knew exactly what they were capable of. Although He had always hoped the airplane would be considered such a lethal weapon as to deter war. Much like the success modern nuclear weapons have had. (see Cold War)
For the record it was ''Little Boy and Fat Man''.

..... At the close of WWII the last of the living Wright brothers publically commented that had they known their invention was to be refined and used to deliver such a powerful weapon they would not have persued it.

edh13,
You are correct on the names of the two A bombs. I knew the correct names but a brain fart set in and I appreciate your correction. As far as my comment concerning the Wright brother's comment on the bomb, I have no proof that it is incorrect or possibly taken out of context but I will let it stand. I am always open to knowing and learning the truth about historic events and personalities. Many famous quotes are questionable throughout our early history. I do know that Orville's comment was not made publicly and can not be documented as factual.
I suppose, not knowing the actual statement, that it would be better to say that Orville's comment was more on the line that he was saddened that their invention of the aircraft was refined and used to deliver such a deadly and horrific weapon.

Awesome choice! I have modeled this fighter at 74" in 1/6th scale to Ellsworth Getchel's #105 Austrailian Royal Air Force full scale version. Howard Pardue's SeaFury is a work of art also, and then of course there is "September Fury". The SeaFury is a BIG fighter/bomber. Had it been introduced at the begining of the war I'm convinced it would hold a greater chapter in history comparable to the Spitfire.

That is a matter of personal opinion by both of us. We can agree to disagree....right? Do you play poker? If you do then you know it does not take the best hand to win!
I may not always be right but I do know how to win (and lose gracefully)!
"I thought I made a mistake once...... but I was wrong!"
Voting stats still say P-51 by a HUGE margain. Actually I love them all. I have always wondered, had I been lucky enough to fly a warbird in WWII, and not knowing my nationality, what would have been my steed, and would I have lived to talk about my experiences.
My neighbor that lives directly across the street was a lower ball turret gunner in a B-17. I can't imagine the visions he still has in his mind.

No other plane got more Rising Suns on the side that the F6F Hellcat. The very best of WWII, but not as purdy as a Corsair. I'm sure if the F4U could have joined the effort sooner it would have given the Hellcat a real run for her money. In Europe the Spit, Mustang, and later variants of the BF/ME 109 were pretty darn impressive.
The other one I don't see much mention of is the B-25. The Doolittle Raid was just what the US needed to get morale and enlistment up to par.

I can't believe that so many of you voted for the mustang without a capital m. They were far from the greatest WWII fighter. They are over rated and everyone has at least one. That is except me. I think they are ugly and everytime I turn around at the field there one is. Just one more dog in the sky. Sorry but thats just my opinion of the P-51!!!

I don't have a P-51 either, nor have the desire to own one. the USAAF didn't even need the Mustang, as the P-47 was more then
enough. most over rated aircraft however would be the P-51D.
anyways, pic below is the Greatest WarBird in all of history.

Well Barry,
You slam everyone else but do not give your personal pick. How can we slam you back without your pick? Give it up! What is your pick? I'm really suprised no one has mentioned any Russian fighters. Here's another one....the Douglas Skyraider also known as the "Flying Dump Truck". Carried the same ( if not more ) ordinance than the B-17. Probably one of the best ground support aircraft of WWII along side the F4U Corsair.
I read a story once about a lone P-47 pilot returning home with no ammunition when a Fw-190 pulled up behind him and completely unloaded his cash into the "Jug". The pilot said he could only huddle up behind his armour plate and hope for the best. The "Jug "pilot said the sound of the incoming fire was unreal and then it stopped. The Fw-190 pilot had emptied his ammo. The "Jug' pilot then watched as the Fw-190 pilot pulled up along side his plane and saluted him in a gesture of respect.

The Bf-109G does deserve a LOT of respect. Why were the German fighters comparatively smaller than all the other fighters? Hartman,Galland, all those great German Aces practically lived and slept in their planes. I know that many were so fatigued that they could instinctively fly their fighters while taking short naps.
Erich Hartmann....352 combat victories.........NEVER lost a Wingman
Adolf Galland......104 combat victories........705 combat missions
These men, although the enemy, deserve our greatest respect.
I hate war but I love the planes and the pilots. Truely amazing history.

" Erich Hartman....352 combat victories.........NEVER lost a Wingman "
out of all his acomplishments, never losing a wingman is what he was most proud of.
also he (Hartmann)was never shot down by an enemy aircraft.

For carnage by the ton, for a single engine aircraft, using non nuclear weapons, who dares to challenge the JU-87 Stuka ?
