Warbird colors arrived today! I will be getting ready for paint very soon, question though what paint should I use for a primer/base. I normally just prime and paint with automotive primer. I have seen a lot done lately using a silver base. I don't plan on doing much chipped paint down to bare metal, just light weathering and windstreaking using a spray and wipe method with some oil staining. So would I be better off just doing the auto primer base or go with a silver base?

If your not going to do any chipping, or very light chipping, I would skip the silver base. For any paint chips, you can just use a very fine tipped paint brush and silver paint.

Thats what I was thinking of doing. I will just do that, for the effect I want to achieve I think auto primer will be better plus I already have it on hand.

Been back on the 190 tonight. Working on the drop tank and pylon I glued some hardwood blocks and light ply for the resin piece to mount to. Then I glued light ply in the rear as this will screw to a reinforced spot on the fuse behind the wing. Then I glued ply and hardwood to the very front of the pylon and drilled two holes through each side as these house two screws that bolt the front to each wing half. Nuts are easily accessible through the landing gear bays.
Thanks to Evan Q. for his build thread on his website. This is where I got the idea for the mounting as this was the easiest one I found.

Here is the pylon attached to the 190. I still have to trim the Resin piece as it keeps the pylon from sitting nice and flush. I will do this later this weekend. I wanted to just get it mounted for now and see how it fits.

I also still need to decide on a release mechanism for the tank. I saw an air release a while back that I liked but may be too big and bulky for this project. Will probably work in a servo release mechanism. For now rubber bands is all I have. I want to work in a strap as well like the original tank.

It is starting to come together nicely!

Looking good. Can't wait to see some color on it. Looking at your cowl, I wish I would of extended the interior of my cowl ring more to give it that duct effect, oh well..

I think with the extension I got it turned out pretty good, kinda wish the fan was forward slightly more, oh well.... I had a weekend like yours Thomas. The ignition in my smaller 190 fried, and I managed to smoke 1 wing servo in it minutes later. Then tonight I thought I could get the forward landing gear reinforcing ply bent and glued in the wheel wells of the SisT. I was wrong, snapped both of them! So I'm going to have to make something up. Took me an hour just to get the pylon shaped right to fit the wing! I'm done for a few days, I can't seem to get anything right lately. The only thing that went smoothly was getting the primer coat on my flaps![:@]

That end of the world prediction must of had some small truth to it, b/c it definitely made the weekend a hellacious one for things going wrong. I never did like the idea of bending ply for the gear well reinforcement. How thick of ply do they use, 1/16"? I always planned to replace that with G-10 if I got my hands on a sist, as it would be much easier to bend i think.

Ahhhh, good idea, I didn't even think about that. I have just the right thickness of G10 for that, that will remain flexable. I will try it when I get over my frusteration, thanks Thomas!

That's quite an impressive airplane you're building.

There was some debate on whether this plane was overdone in the scale details and that the tin canning effect was overdone at the first of the build thread. I just wanted to post this picture that was taken recently to show how worn and weathered the skin of a warbird can get. I still stand by what I said earlier that I think the SisT 190 is an excellent scale representation of the real thing! Granted the picture is a Zero and not a FW-190 but you get the idea.

Thanks Thomas I'll do that. I still have to remove it to paint and attach steering so that will be a great time to do a leak down test on it. Hopefully it was not made on friday.

I can't quite remember when Doug bought them. I think they are a couple of years old. I haven't had a problem with any of my Sierra's yet, but If I do, I will take care of them. I would like to convert them to electric just for the slow scale cycling. But I am in this bird enough and will be for sure when its done so it will stay on air for now.

I was going to start spraying primer on some parts today, I don't like spraying in my garage and it was the normal windy spring day today so I didn't get a chance to do anything. After the weekend it is probably best anyway.

Oh i understand completely! I just checked my system. 14 hours with the gear up and it didn't leak any air at all. But i only get 2 complete cycles before the gear wont make its way up anymore.

Figured I would post it since I can't afford another one right now but there is a SisT FW-190 D9 for sale here on RCU at the moment. There seems to be a high demand for them and none available till later in the year at the earliest. It is a plane that I cannot recommend enough!

I saw it as well. I have bought a few things from him. Transactions all went well, and he was very quick to keep me updated on the progress of things.

I will support what Thomas has said. I have bought quite a bit of stuff from him and found that he is honest and reliable.

Not much to report on the 190. I did cut out new formers for the forward area of the wheel wells out of G10 that was flexible enough as per Invertmast(Thomas's) recommendation. Then threw out the ply formers!!!! Spot CA glued the formers in place to hold in place. Then followed up with a thorough treatment of Hysol for a permanent hold. Turned out great, forward wing structure is very strong now! I can now grab the wing from the front without worry.

Haven't been able to paint anything as I have had 20-30 MPH winds for 3 days straight now.[:@]

Still waiting for decent weather to paint. Another weekend with 20 MPH winds all day long[:@] I did get some pics of her all together though outside. Still a lot of little things to do still in the mean time but it is getting close to completion now. Still have to do final fitting of gear doors. Design a cowl mount. Work up a sliding canopy actuator. Install cockpit. Then finally install all radio gear. Plus paint, and I think that is about it, oh ya except for the drop tank release mechanism. Still trying to decide the best way I want to do that too. But here are some pics of how she looks as of today.
