Default Muffler performance

Hello,

Has anyone out there done any testing on which muffler (for G-62) provides the best performance? Logic dictates the engine should have a'benchmark' rpm reading using the stock muffler with any given prop. If I switch to a B&B muffler - will the rpm's go up or down? I hate to spend 100 bucks on Bennett mufflers if the stock muffler provides better performance. Space is not an issue.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

No real gain, but loud.

Best muffler is by far a tuned pipe. Quiet and a substantial gain in performance.

Jerry,

There are pages and pages and pages of opinions on this subject in the gas engines forum.

That said, if your search yields little, then starting this thread over there will RAPIDLY result in pages and pages and pages of opinions, I'd bet!

Thanks Noah, I'll try that. I was hoping for hard data as opposed to opinions [8D], but I can do the testing myself. You know what they say about opinions.

I suggest checking out some motocross forums, specifically the 2-stroke gas engine sections. those
boys seem to know how to make some hp. not just at the peak rpm either. but everywhere under the
curve. which is what you want.

I gained 300 or so RPM going from stock to the B&B muffler on a G-62, also gained much noise! Switched to a Bisson muffler for an OS 1.60 two stroke and lost 100 or so, but picked up a far nicer tone. The 160 muffler has the same mounting hole dimensions and exhaust port size as the G-62. I cut the necked down ends off of the muffler pipes to reduce the backpressure since gas engines do not need back pressure to pressurize the tank.

The stock muffler is a dog. Sure, it keeps things quiet, but the engine's performance is crap. The B&B muffler will perform better, but don't expect a huge difference, and it will be louder.

I've got a G62 in my Yellow P47. A buddy of mine built an exhaust system which ran from the muffler through the firewall, exiting at the scale supercharger dump location on the lower side of the fuse. He used pipe that was just large enough to fit over the exhaust tubes of the muffler, and there were a couple of 90's and 45's in both stretches of exhaust. With all of this being said, I never thought my engine ran up the way it was supposed to. I'm running a 22X10 warbird prop. It ran good, just not great.

One day while flying, I realized that the engine was coming alive, as it was running better than ever before. The prop was actually starting to "bark". Upon landing, my buddy realized that the one exhaust pipe had come loose right at the muffler. Bingo! The engine, for once, was actually able to breath.

I've since rebuilt my exhaust. I went back with the same design, but I've gone to a much larger diameter pipe. I've not flown it since doing this, but I'm quite positive the result will be positive.

No matter which exhaust you use, if you want performance, and you're not worried about noise, go with large-volume system. An engine has to be able to breath in order to run at peak performance. If noise is an issue, the B&B style muffler is about as good as you're going to get.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Yard,

I will be putting two of these engines in an F7F Tigercat and I want any performance edge that I can get. Noise is not an issue where we fly, and the cowl is large enough to fit even the stock muffler.
I have never used the stock mufflers before, because I never had room to fit them in the cowl. I always used the B&B because they were so slim. I appreciate your lengthy response.

I haven't looked very close at a 62 muffler, but I had a similar situation where the stock muffler fit in the cowl and didn't want to spend big bucks on an aftermarket muffler.

Can you drill out the baffling or pipes inside? I had a G-20 muffler where the exhaust exit pipe on the inside was capped of at the top with just a small slit toward the top for the exhaust to exit through.

I drilled a hole in the pipe inside through the engine exhaust port side of the muffler. It made a big difference in power. It got alittle louder, but not as bad as a B&B
