RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
I just could not wait any longer and was itching to hear the Saito 100 with the Keleo exhaust.
Eventhough it was a bit on the cool side today at +2c, it was not too bad.
The first tuning of the Saito FA100 went well and I had no problems getting it to start.
I had purchased it used and it must have had a few flights under it's belt.
Unfortunately I had moved the low idle setting when I installed the engine and
thought it was the screw that held the control arm in place.
That's why I had to start from scratch.
Question I have is cooling.
Is the hole for the rocker covers on the bottom front of the cowl enough,
or should I make a hole in the back underside of the cowling so that the
air can flow through?
Any advise would be much appreciated as
this is my first 4 stroke and closed cowl setup.
Thanks in advance.
Now I am really getting anxious for that maiden.

From what I have tried in the past, I have found the following formula for cooling holes. I was told years ago you need a ratio of 1 to 2. So if you have 1 square inch of area for the intake, you need 2 square inches of exit area. Dont know if thats correct but its always worked for me. One thing about glo fuel, seems it runs way cooler than gasoline. As long as you dont get it too lean.
My opinion but open to other pov's

Andreas ,
WBG is right!! I have use that formula for years and it work for me too!!!!! You want as much air going over the engine as you can get. I had the same setup like you have in your H9 Spit, before I had what people call the 2.4 gig brown out. The plane was a total lost and the engine need $180.00 worth of parts to repair. The plane went in nose first in a pile of rocks!!![&o] One thing you need in your flight box is a Flash Point Infrared Temp Gage by Duratrax. This gage have save me a lot of headache on my 90 size nitro helicopters. What I like to do is to tie the plane down and run the engine with the cowling in place for one tank of fuel and take a reading right after the prop stop. I than use that number as a base when I go and fly the model. If the flight temp is higher than the ground temp, that can tell you two things, the engine is running lean in the air and or the engine is not getting enough air to cool it!!! One thing you will love if you run 15% heli-mix, to see the trail of smoke going down the side of the fuse and over the tail as you do a low high speed pass.
I hope this info help and I am sorry I don't have any pictures to show you how I did my cowling!!

Looks like a spitfire to me good work on it and I dont see any "mistakes" Just call it field repairs and we all know those are just supposed to keep them flying so they can shoot down more 109's lol.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
I continue with details and now I think that must make again. Some reason i put marks 2-4" too tail and now it doesnt looks good....
Even I look orginal plane I make that mistakes. Painting must correct about white border lines. Tape which I use make this lines was bad. This is so difficult because like to make good looking all details. I try to remember that planes belongs to sky and it is only one part that small details.
thanks to all about comments.

The first rule in modeling scale warbirds is, you never finish detailing and changing. You can work on it from now till the end of time and you will always find some detail that just doesnt look correct. Keep up the great work Keep posting pictures. We love pictures

Jao68;
I agree with WBG!!! One of my club member is a scale nut!! Every time I go to his workshop, he will have one of his war bird strip down because he did not like something!!! You are doing a great job and please keep the pictures coming!! Any small mistake do not show up in the air where the Spit belong!!

Thanks for the links!!! Lots of good info!!! I still think the wings of the Spitfire came from the shape of the Sea Gull. When these bird are in the wind and not flapping, the wings look just like the wings on the spit!!!
Thanks, again for the links!!

Hi Brothers
Here are a few up date pictures of my TF Spitfire build!!! Just finish putting the glass cloth on the bottom of the wings. Now to let the wings cure over night so I can do the top tomorrow!! What I did on the bottom wings was to lay the cloth in section. First section, I laid the cloth from where the wing join the center section to where the aileron meet the flaps. After that has been resin, I over lay the cloth where I stop before, all the way to the tips. I did both wings that way and then go to the center section. I make sure I over lap the cloth where the wings join the center section.
Will post pictures of the top part of the wings tomorrow after they are done. Look at the fuselage, that will be fun!!!!

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Hi Sonny,
looking good sofar. I guess the fuselage is going to be tricky with all the curves and angles.
One never knows what to expect. That's the fun of it.
I had a look on youtube how other modelers fiberglass their planes. Pretty interesting stuff.
I will have to try it on my next project, should it be a kit and not an ARF.
Keep us updated.
Andreas
Happy building and flying.
P.S.
Couldn't find anything new on the "New" Topflite Spit either.

Our oldest dog is not happy because his knees (both) made operations and he must be no running and jumping. Other two dogs run and play outside and also some big machine took too much attention.

Hi Brothers,
More up dates on the Spit wings The tops are done!!! I am glad I did add the cloth. Now to let them cure overnight and seal the edges tomorrow. Like I said before, the fuse is going to be fun!!! One good tip if you use Pacer Z-Poxy finishing resin and you want to save your brushers for next time, put the brushers in isopropyl alcohol 91% and leave them in the alcohol over night. The next day just remove them than dry them off and you are ready to use them again!!
