Yak 3's practice day Vid Wanaka 2012
Hi again, another vid ,this time two Yak 3's on practice day.
Think the landing of the first Yak is pretty impresive as well.
Cheers steff.

Cheers or posting, the Yak 3 is certainly a beautiful aeroplane. I thought the Allison powered versions had an intake along the top deck, between the cowl and cockpit which was always the giveaway, but perhaps they've moved it elsewhere to keep the original looks.

I know nothing about the restored Yaks.. but to me, and I could be wrong, the engine notes sound smooth like a Merlin. To me, the Allison has a bit more of a pop note on the exhaust.. I am interested to find out either way!

Yummy yummy love the engine wind up in the dive.
How people can fly scale electric war birds beats me, i like a bit of noise at the sharp end.

Hi, pretty sure they are not restored Yak 3s, but new ones just off the production line. The commentator at the air show said something about how the original jigs were found in the Yak factory and they just started up production again. However there are no original engines available anymore, hence the Allisons.
I was also told that the blue tailed Yak 3 has just been finished and Warbirds of Wanaka 2012 was its first airshow????

Yak-3 is smaller and lighter than a P-51 or Spitfire, so an Allison will pull it along quite nicely.

Some pics from my collection, a P-51A and an A-36.
Bob Deford's full scale Spitfire replica with an Allison up front.

Very true but the Allison does a pretty fine job of pulling around Mustangs too, and even one Spitfire that I'm aware of. From what I've heard the Allison powered 'stang will actually run away from the Merlin powered models at low altitudes. Plus, the Allison P-51 is by far the sexiest version of the airplane! (That last part might just be my opinion though!)

Looks like you had the best seats in the house and with those mountains in the background those low passes are great.
Post away Steff.

If "the Allison does a pretty fine job of pulling around Mustangs", it must be more than enough for a smaller aircaft. Reading some Spitfire/Merlin literature, I've got the impression that performance higher up was a priority for many Merlin models. Different supercharger configurations seem to be one of the major differences between all the different Merlins.

While watching the video I found this one also from the same show Warbirds Over Wanaka. The sound in my surround sound shakes the walls:-) Love this music...

I think the Allison mustangs are one of the most underrated planes in history. History has a way of over-simplifying things (i.e. Allison mustangs bad, Merlin mustangs good). The fact of the matter is that it was one of the fastest propeller-driven planes below 10K throughout the entire war (despite the fact that it went active early, shortly after the battle of britain). I've read that lots of the RAF tactical recon pilots didn't want to "trade up" to spitfire mk. XIVs!
It was no escort fighter, but theres plenty of stuff to bust up below 10k (railroads, river traffic, convoys, and every once in a while a fighter or two!)

Any of the 3 days is a great day at Warbirds over Wanaka, you can't hear the commentator over the sound of the engines anyway!!!!!!
