I'm Lucky my control horn broke
in the car,,
I took my p-47 and Kingfisher out to display at a Boy Scouts Jamboree yesterday and while I was assembling the planes I see the Elevator horn was broke?? I'm thinking what the heck? I didn't bang the plane drop it or anything..
The only thing I can figure is I must have rushed the push rod install because it doesn't line up with the horn perfectly now,, the sideways pressure must have been enough over time to bend and finally break the horn. It's a solid 4-40 rod and a Robart Scale type horn only about 2 years old..
Got lucky it didn't happen in flight,, I'll be more careful to bend the wire more precisely in the future.

I think all models should be subject to a pre-flight inspection like real planes. After all, ours would take only one minute.
Lucky you that you can fly on Boy Scouts Jamboree. Here at Markam Park in Sunrise FL, the airfield closes when they have jamborees.

Hey,
don't go breaking things before you get out here! Just so you know. Today the wind is calm and the temp at 10:00 was 69! Couldn't make the pond myself with prior commitments but quite a few from the club have been there since 8:30 this morning. If we have the same kind of weather on the 27th you better bring enough fuel! LOL

We had a static display only,, no room to fly at the fairgrounds safely,, the kids liked the Aero-fly Sim though

Scale,
that would have me spooked on all the rest, I'm happy it happened on the ground for you... I used them same horns for years on many planes and never had a problem, did the side load on yours feel like it was that bad?

First time for me too,,
I must have just missed it when I put the push rod on,, didn't seam bad at the time, but you can see from the pics how the alignment is off and the horn is bent that direction,, that could only happen over time, not from an impact.
I'll make sure these's are dead on in the future.

I would not use those Robart control horns. They are very brittle and break rather easily. I had it happen several times, sometimes just bumping it with my hand getting the plane out of the truck So, I quit using them. Better option in that size range is the steel Sullivan horns.

Hey Tom, Did you finish that Barton P51B?
I would use a G10 or carbon horn, you can make them yourself or buy them pre-made, sometimes I pickup a Dubro glass filled servo horn set and modify them. Make a slot on the control surface same thickness as the horn and glue them on. Pretty much permanent and strong, I keep them short enough as I don't need that much movement and it keeps them from grabbing objects that can break them off.
In Jeff's case he needs metal ones for safety measure that go with his 1/3 scale warbird

I've had those same type horns on the ailerons of my kinfisher for 15 years,,
Not yet Vic,,
you know how it is,, got started then side tracked,, I need to Fab a fin/rudder, it seams I lost the cores for that.
After that it's ready to assemble
Did Scottdog tell you I picked up that p-40 from him? Where do I get a canopy?

It may have been bumped, but you can see it warped,, I'm sure that contributed to it breaking,, I'm going to put the broken off piece in a vice and see how much force it takes to break it
Thanks,
Thanks,,, I'll just do it up by scratch,, Aeroloft is way to proud $$$ of it's products
