Default Question about P-40 found in the Sahara

When I brought up questions yesterday at the field about that P-40 discovered in the desert after 70 years, no one knew about the story.
Here's my question, it seems from the pictures that the plane had radial engine. Weren't those planes equipped with the Merlin engine?

I don't know what pictures you looked at but the P40 had an allison engine, not a radial.

The round looking section you see, is actually the reduction drive snapped off the engine, still in the aircraft.

Oops. Sorry. I looked again, and yes, it's no cylinders I was looking at.

Man we would love to have that plane in our barn, we have a rack full of parts that could be used to get it restored.
