RE: HobbyKing 1/5 50cc Spitfire Mk IX Group Build Tips/Mods
Just an update of sorts. I bought 4.5" 4-spoke spitfire tires from VQwarbirds. They came in the other day and look nice. They are made by Robart. You could probably also get some from Glennis at much higher cost and wait a couple months to get them(maybe longer, maybe less). While the Robart are nice and look better then "semi" scale, the Glennis are true scale. Anyhow....here's a pic of the wheels. Due to issues with RCU and images currently, Im uploading the pic to photobucket to make sure it can be viewed. Pic shows front and back. These wheels fit the axles of the Hobbyking retracts perfectly btw.

Sorry for the delay with your answer. I missed your post untill now.
I made a dam from 1/64 plywood and filled with lead shot, epoxy mix. I made the battery mount to brace the top of the engine box and hold 2 batteries. I made the muffler and prop extension so that the engine would be in the cowel for stream lining. I have 8 screws (4-40) holding the cowel on.

These pictures show how I have my Spitfie set up. My Spitfire flies with down trim. The up picture is my low rate and all I use when flying. The gear and flap picture shows my gear and flaps down. The gear up picture shows the aileron up also my low rate. My plane needs alot of aileron but very little elevator.

Servo481,
Thanks so much for the pictures and info!
That helps me a lot...
I really like your battery tray idea.

Yes they are flight paks and yes they are close to the engine. I ducted inlet air from the air intake and the scale cowel exhaust are drilled for exit air. I put a thin aluminum heat deflector shield between the batteries and engine and they are LiFe batteries.

Hi Guys,
I received my HK Spitfire recently and I am just starting to put it togethor.
I have subscribed to this thread as there seem to be quite a few good ideas being shared.
I did not receive a manual with my kit [] Does anyone know where I can get the manual? I sent an email to HK, but theyu said there was problem with their website sharing files...

There really isn't much in the manual that you couldn't ascertain by looking at the plane if you've built a few arfs before. The manual is only like 16 pages and has very basic information. You could get more info by just looking at the photos some of us have posted.

Another reason to stick with Top-Flite. They do not leave out the manual and can be dealt with locally. Waiting for there Spitfire in late May.

Really? You feel the need to be sarcastic? You've said your peace about YOU getting the Top Flite. Good for you. If you need a manual to assemble, fine. But this isn't a Top Flite thread so take your attitude elsewhere.
I know damn well anyone buying a 50cc size plane has enough experience building planes they wouldn't need the manual except for CG reference. So please....enough already.

All,
Yes, I have built quite a few airplanes in my day... No, I do not rely on the manual for construction. In fact I plan to make some changes to the way the linkage and setup of the airplane, to match my preferences.
Primarily, I wanted the manual for CG and control surface throws reference. And yes, I do know how to find the MAC, but would just like to use what the manufacturer recommends as a guage.
Any help withthe above information would be greatly appreciated.

Ugh, enough with the trolling through threads and answering a question with "Well you shouldn't have bought brand X, if you would have gotten brand Y this wouldn't happen". It's completely unhelpful and a serves no purpose other than wasting server space. The most frustrating part: Why is it when someone gets called out on this nonsense they get angry and call everyone a know-it-all?

We have gotten flight reports from a few that said 6 inches back from where the wing panels meet the fuse flies ok. Maybe just a smidge tail heavy....but controllable. I plan on putting mine at 5 3/4" for the first flight.
Control throws as listed in manual:
Aileron.....................................| Elevator.................................| Rudder.......................................| Flap
Low Rate: 11 degrees up/down...| Low Rate: 8 degrees up/down...| Low Rate: 16 degrees left/right.....| Half flap: 15 degrees
High Rate: 16 degrees up/down..| High Rate: 12 degrees up/down| High Rate: 22 degrees left/right.....| Full flap: 30 degrees
The real spitfire had 90 degree flaps and only that setting aside from stowed/none.
On mine, half flaps will be about 30 degrees and full flaps will be roughly75 degrees

The CG reference is not listed as measure so many mm back or so many inches. Wish it were, but the manual says ''measure back 25-28% of the whole wing root's length''.

It is good to know how to calculate CG though anyway. Knowledge is power! lol In all honesty, CG should never be an issue with your plane. It may be painful to get it to balance (lot's of added weight) but with an aircraft that has been tested by a manufacturer (hopefully) it is not impossible.
I will be interested to see one of these fly.

Well...we have proof already that this particular brand of Spitfire flies fine at 6" back for CG. There was a couple vids posted here or that other 50cc hobbyking warbird thread showing one flying on a da50 or 60
That being said...Fred is planning on bringing his out to the field this sunday. So hopefully we'll get to see it maiden. Mine shouldn't be too far behind. Hopefully by the end of May or early June.

Built? .......Or assembled?
Thes Chinese manuals? Seem to be the last place to look for CG info. Unless you need an excuse to use when the airplane crashes on it's maiden flight, which seems to be so prevelant with these Chinese Arfs.
