I've been reading this thread for ages now, finally got my Mustang back in Jan and have just finished it!

Some pictures attached (if it worked?)

...for more pics click [link=http://www.flickr.com/photos/dabevan/sets/72157601084288729/]here[/link]

Weight 21.5lbs
DA50
Robart Retracts
22x12 Mejzlik prop

...total cost = approx £1800 ($3600) - but don't tell my wife who thinks it cost £150!

...if I can figure out how to fit it in the car Ill be taking her (the plane) to the flying field for some vibration tests/range tests, then im going to give it all a final inspect and tighten up everything that vibrated loose and test fly her!

Has anyone used the Lado motorized retracts for this plane? http://www.lado-tech.com/ If so, what did you do for the tailwheel?

I have not used them but I saw them at the Toledo show in April. I thought they were the cats meow. About $300 for the retrofit. Don't remember if he had the tail wheel or not. I flew my P-51 for the 1st time last night. Except for the Take off everything was text book. At half throttle I almost didn't have enough rudder to over come the engine torque. Before the next flight I'll have more right rudder available. Other than that all it needed was a little down trim at that was it. If its still in one piece at the end of the flying season I think I might retro fit my landing gears. If you do the retrofit keep us all posted.

Nice looking plane. I like the canopy detail. You'll like the way it flies. What is the F-80 all about?

KO, thanks for the compliment. This actually is not the arf version but kit. The F80 is poweered by a ram 750 and is yet to fly.....dont wannt to drive the miles to find an airport......, but it was my idea of what if the war went a coupla yrs longer ....the Tuskegee airmen mighta been flying this plane. It is a Byron kit and the conversion was elatively easy. One day it will fly. The mustang is modelled after my friend and Tuskegee airman Lt.Col. Chuck Lane. He was the youngest Tuskegee Airman of the war. Its funny, I grew up right down the street from his residence and didnt know his until i got into the hobby. This is a tribute to him and all the other airmen who served...no matter their race, color or sense of humor.....

I'm with you on the tribute. To bad there was so much supression against those who fought so honorably. Its time they get the honor and respect they deserved. One of the clubs near Detroit had a Tuskegee Airman speak at one of their functions. I wish I could have made it.
I have a 3W-55i with the Keleo exhaust on my P-51. Plenty of power and the exhaust it neat but loud. Wish it had a more throaty sound if you know what I mean. I have one flight on it so far. Everything went text book, how ever I caution you to be ready for a lot of right rudder to over come the torque on take off. Ease the power in slowly. On my 1st attempt I hit a flight station and did some damage only because I wasn't ready for big torque effect. Both take offs were at half throttle and never went much above that on the 1st flight. Next flight I'll be a little more agressive. Landing was a breeze with 1/2 flap setting. Good luck on your's and keep us posted.

I really don't know,,, Sorry can't help much.
John Braun built a verson of what you are talking about..
Many British and American airplanes found there way to the famus KG 200, and used for black operation sorties! (acording to MA magazine)

All I have is the pict of it...
I was thinking about modifying a ARF p-51 kit into that....... Great winter project!!

Default RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I just wanted to add some knowledge that I have taken in over the last year.
Many of you this is your first large scale Plane, and probly the first time you have put in Large pin/Robart syle hinges in ....

I included some photos of what a hing shood look like, especially on the flaps on this plane....
Although this is a aileron of a aerobatic aircraft, it is the same concept...
I am aware that there is a video of how to install Robart hinges, with GOrilla Glue... This is informative but does not really show how a hing should look and be seated to get max throw w/o pulling the surface away from the LE of the Wing!

I used Polyurathane Glue (Elmers ultimat, half the price of Gorilla @ home Depot right now, works the same)
I have found the best way to cut open the hinges is to use a #11 blade first, and then put the soldering iron on the edge to seal it up... Otherwise you end up with the melted covering in the hinge and that has to then be duog out, becuase it doea not allow you to cut your divit on each side.

1.. Hinge pin is seeted deep in the aileron
2. cut out a recese on both sides of the hole so it looks like the photo.... (I used the Dremel with a grinding wheel )
3. use glue or Epoxy... Even though I know that the GOrilla glue expands a whole lot when you put too much glue and water in the holes, I still end up with lots of wipe up.... from the foaming out out the holes...

You could probly get by with a Drop of gorilla glue in each side of the hing, becuase it expands soo much and holds like concreate.... But that would be too easy!....
Just remember you don't need much of it...

Hope this helps, I am aware that the manual does show a drawing of the pin hing placement in the aileron, but a picture is a , well you get the idea...

Here are some pics from what I did on mine,, I used Bob Violets hinges and cylinders for the mains and sonic tronic hinges for the tail wheel. You will have to divise a seperate actuater for the tail gear doors and use a air micro switch to keep them open when the gear is down. asumming your going to want the typical gear door operation. Jomar makes an electronic gear door sequencer that works ok. so the inner main doors can close when the gear is down and locked. One suggestion I can make that I feel is very important. Use a high volume air tank and maybe even two if you can fit them in. The more volume you have in the system the less the pressure drops with each cycle of the gear. I also used a seperate air system for the canopy operation.

Default RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly Thread

I finished mine a few weeks bad and have been waiting for good weather, the weather is finally here so the test flight is penciled in for tomorrow - Ill post the video no matter how it flys!

My CoG (dry) is about 0.25" in front of the recommended pos (even with a couple of lead strips under tail), but then some people have commented that at the recommended pos it can feel a bit twitchy? - im aware I might run out of elevator travel on the flair, but i'll test out the low speed and if needed switch to high rates to land.

...Im using a DA50 so im a bit surprised that it came out a little nose heavy as most people seem to be adding nose weight?

...One question I do have is what kind of trim changes should I expect for flaps down? - plus im assuming gear up/down doesnt change trim much?

Anything else I should be aware of?

Wish me luck!

Dave,
Here is the Best advice that I can Give anyone that is flying a plane, especially a Giant scale gas plane is this.............
Keep the airplane High in the air, and keep it going fast!

I have found out the Hard way, that No matter which engine you have in your plane, (It doesn't matter who the manufacture is) the worste thing that can happen to the plane is having the engine quit while you are going slow and doing a fly by in a land pattern to check out the landing speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\
Do all of that stuff way up in the air! Engines tend to quit when they are at a slow speed and then are gassed high thottle to bring the airplane back around for another landing sequence.........

As lang as you are a good pilot and your plane has been built properly and balanced properly and you take my prevy advice, you should be just fine, and ready to be able to cost the plane in, if the engine quits suddenly!...

I read that the percentage of first flight failures was higher due to improper balanced plane, and flying error were some of the highest............
Engine failure or engine issues was lower on the list............In my experience, engine outs, or flame outs caused like 90% of all of my crashed planes...............
JMHO
Good luck Dave......

Justin

Very nice terry!
It looks good to see someone correct the radiotor and the landing gear doors cut to proper length and the nice attachment to the wing by making it all rather than placing the unfitting plastic piece....

Here is a interesting photo of the Big Beautiful Doll Plane........
Looks like the top of the Fuse before the canapy is black not olive color........... But in later photos is does?
Perhaps it was changed at some point??/ Or it may be the way the sund was reflecting???

If you can get your hands on a book called: "On Special Missions - the Luftwaffe's Research and Experimental Squadrons 1923-1945" You'll find plenty of information on this subject. It's a great book. There is a website on the back www.classic-books.co.uk but I'm not sure if that is the publisher or distributor.

It has more than just Mustangs, it covers captured spitfires, a typhoon, p-38 lightnings, a mosquito, thunderbolts, most with good color side views.

I think thats better to use an airsylinder for the slideing canopy, Robart (Part # 165L)
have some who will do the work. http://www.robart.com/air_systems/aircyl.aspx [sm=thumbup.gif]

Being that I was going to paint the top of the fuse ( I removed the olive drab due to wrinkles) and disliked the way the Monokote was shrinking so I put Shiny Oricote metal down... and then was going to pain it olive color.... but I actually like the dark black w small about of green in it... in this photo better than the olive drab that came on the plane....

I installed some customed built main struts from Century Jet. With my first attempted to start my DA-50, the gear cracked the wood mounts. So now I went ahead and ordered the Robart main struts thinking the metal plates were designed to prevent what happed to me and you. I suppose I wasted my money and will have to beef-up the wood. Has this happened to many of the TF P-51 ARF?
