Default Top-Flite giant Corsair - how to fix the non scale wingfoil of stab and fin?

Just starting out my build that I want to do as near scale as possible with the Top-Flite kit. To my horror I see that the horisontal stabilizer and the fin are built nearly flat, only with a sanded profile to the leading edge. On the real plane all airfoils are curved. I was really surprised to see this as I've built a Top-Flite 1/8 Thunderbolt earlier where it's tail was built up with curved surfaces as on the real one.

Has anyone described a fix to this, or even better: done a build thread where this error is corrected?

Happy kit building!

Henning

Pretty simple fix. Just add some thin ribs to the sheeting and sheet that creating the airfoil. FYI there's not much of an airfoil.

From what I found if you scale it it can just be sanded into the stab and fin. you have to make a coupla of temps to get both sides the same.

Sheet it with LIGHT 1/8" balsa on both sides, mark the high point of the airfoil and then sand down from there to the leading edge and trailing edge. LIke BobH said, there is very little airfoil when scaled down. His suggestion works great as well. Ribs on top of the framework, then sheet as normal.

I have plans available and can laser cut a kit as well.

Chad. Great stuff, just what I was looking for. What airfoil have you based your plans on? And what do you charge for sending either just the plans or the plans and laser cut parts to me in Norway?

Hi Henning,

I used Paul Matt's scale drawings as a basis for the design of the tail including the airfoil. I will gladly email you the plans in PDF format at no charge if you would like to cut your own parts. I can also supply a CAD file of the parts if you know of somebody that can laser cut them for you there in Norway. If you would like me to provide the laser cut parts then please contact me at the email address below and we can discuss it.

Thanks!
Chad Veich
