Bob, look for a Wild Hare Hellcat. They are said to be just larger versions of the cmp and esm kits. They ae smaller than the zirolli an byron kits. They come up forsale in the market place every so often

I made one up out of scrap 2 x 4's and some pine. Works great and very sturdy. Here are some pics.
Thanks,
Fred

The way i do my big planes is use two pieces of 1/8" plywood approximately 5" X 10" tape them to the bottom of the wing, near the wing tips. Make a line on each one, when taping in place make sure the line is where the CG is supposed to be located. Get a helper (my wife in my case) and gently lift the plane and set into flying position, (tail off of the floor for a taildragger) this will indicate whether it is nose heavy, tail heavy or in the proper range.

I broke down and tried the Vanessa cg machine..... It seemed to work pretty well after I got the hang of it. I need to make a few modifications to it so it works more efficiently. I used a steel rod instead of wood because my birds are pretty heavy and the wood could snap. Also Im going to use a few pulleys similar to a block and tackle to help gain a mechanical advantage while lifting and lowering the plane. It's quite a task doing it without it. I like the fact you can raise and lower your plane from your stand. With other cg machines you'll need to sit the plane on the cg machine an risk it slipping off in the process.....

That sounds like a good approach. I have considered making a Vanessa rig but just never have taken the time.

Hey sign me up. I love the Hellcat, it is my favorite aircraft. I have been out of the hobby for a couple years and was wanting to build and detail another H9 Hellcat to replace the ones I had but they are no longer in production. Anyone know of a sutable replacement. The H9 was the right size for transport, inexpensive, flew very well and were a pefect canvas to go crazy with details.

Here are a couple that I built.

Welcome to the Brotherhood.
Great looking Hellcat's.
I kick myself a lot for not picking up a H9 when they were available.

Hello Hellcat Brotherhood,

Could you please sign me up? Attached are a few pictures of a 1/6th scale Hellcat low budget project that I scratch built a few months ago. I have still to take pictures of the model standing on her wheels with the wings attached and with a dummy radial engine with its dummy 3 bladed Hamilton Standard propeller....The design is not mine but from an enlarged Brian Taylor Hellcat plan (1/8th scale I think) with simple flaps and a cowl and cockpit from Don Smith.

P.S.: the pilot is a USAAF officer in an interservice exchange with the US Navy....

Top deck added and rough sanded. The canopy rails are in, now just have to decide if i will leave them as open by hand or add some sort of servo to open and close the canopy. I did find a linear servo but it is $70, seems a bit pricey for the return. Any thoughts on that are appreciated.

Hi Steve, great work on your Hellcat. I think that it good to open the canopy by hand. It is good and looks smart if you open it by some servo, but in my opinion it is not necessary. In this case you can use some servo for drop bomb system.

Thanks Prekin, i tend to agree with you. My wife wants me to use a linear servo, so we will see how it works out.
I still proudly display your work in my shop.
