I got a set of plans for the fowler flaps from Model airplane news. They work flawless, I just did a quick search and here is a thread showing what they look like.

That's what I was thinking. The APC props on your 90s are perfect pitch vs RPM for that performance, BUT the motors will be over their rated power. Will they do it....probably. Will the motors be happy....maybe. Will the motors be happy behind spinners with no direct cooling air....doubtful
Nominal voltages, and 85-90% efficiency, higher in the air, lower on the ground would be
22.2 volts times 325KV = 7215
7215 times .9 (efficiency losses) =6493. That's roughly 70 MPH prop speed at 13 pitch
This is just my opinion, but if we go by the ratings, I think your motors are a little small at 123 watts per pound, to stay within rated Amps, spin big three blade props, and still have strong performance. Two blade electric props, should be fine. Large three blade props need the extra power
The APC props pull hard, they don't unload until the plane is really moving. It takes a good amount a power to spin them, but they pull the plane very hard
MA props are pretty inefficient and unload a lot. This can be helpful on IC engines get to into the RPM up where it needs to be to make power. On electric, they do the same thing, they let the RPM increase so the motors don't pull so many amps. I think this is what is going to work on your setup. G sonics are very nice props, but they have a very small camber, great electric sport prop, not a great speed prop. I would look at those as well, although they have a large blade profile that might not look right on a 80" plane
The Vario props can be purchased directly thru Ramoser. I'm not aware of a US dealer

Since we have a fair investment in eFlite 90's/Castle Ice 100's... I'd like to salvage as much as we can. I realize my son's Top Flite 60 Mustang and my VQ Lightning are two very different airframes. Would going from 6s to 8s make enough of a performance improvement so we wouldn't have to buy new motors?
Thank you for the guidance on the VarioProps!

That's great news Chris... thank you!
I was clinging to the 6s setup for two reasons. The first is we already have a few 6s batteries. The second and scarier for me is the 8s batts will add about a pound to my AUW.... which I was trying to avoid.
8s and VarioProps here we come! :-)

I received a reply from Christian/Varioprops. See two sections below... the first for my son's TF 60 Mustang. The second for my VQ Lightning.
So far, I have two comments. First on the lack of spinners. Will Tru Turns or others work with this hub? Second, the speed estimates seem low... as in we can expect weak performance. I'd appreciate your thoughts!

That sounds about right on the P-38. Notice the amps, RPM, and prop diameter he has listed. 65 amps per motor 194 watts per pound. MA 14x9 prop is $13. Your going to be north of a $100 for the 12C Varioprops
I think you need to look at this another way. How big an engine would you need to be able to spin a 16" 3 blade prop? How big to spin a 14"x9 3 blade prop. Understanding the plane only needs a pair or 46 two strokes, or a pair of 70 four strokes, you would need to put the correct prop on it for that engine. How big an engine would you need to spin the 16" three blade props you are looking at?
The example Chris referenced is using Zinger two blade props, you can do the same thing with your setup as is, and it will fly fine. Also look at the planes in that example, all slower, lightly loaded planes. A typical P-38 is not lightly loaded, nor slow. I know your invested in Eflite now. Maybe where you bought them will do an exchange with you. In my opinion, if set on larger props, I would address that before spending $$$ on variodrive props.
I'm not saying what you have won't work, just saying you are always going to be pulling near the rated limits. When the motors don't get any cooling air, that's not a good practice
Have you by chance picked up a 14 and 16" MA prop to see how they look? The 16s might look to big, and this issue will correct itself

Heres a couple VQ videos
First one is electric spinning 16x10 MA props turned down to 15". Props size looks pretty good. Motors he has listed are Epower 4130-400, running on 6S, has a 60 amp rating
The second one uses OS AX55s, also using MA three blades, but smaller
Both look like they fly very nicely.
For comparison on your setup. There are a bunch of props that will work. Compare amps vs speed. Notice what the lower RPM, higher pitch does for you
Plane is first video Epower 4130-400 6S 15x10 MA prop (16x10 cut down to 15) is roughly 74 MPH prop speed

I would suggest just going with APC props and gain some data and experience then go forth with a three blade. That way you will have a working set up and a basis to compare the 3 blade props whatever they may be.
Also, Zinger will make any 3 blade you want if you call them. Just dont bother until you have info, Iwouldn't bother with MA props they are very inefficient.

Prop speed/airspeed. Hmmm.
Ragtop, you said your Lightning got mushy around 40'ish mph. My wing loading will be similar. I'm not looking for extreme speed, but don't want to always be flying on the verge of stalling. I also don't want to have to always fly at full throttle either. I'd really like to find a 15" 3 blade, like in the first video, that would work on 8s. How do "Epower 4130-400, running on 6S" compare to eFlite 90's on 8s?
Chris, I'll take your advice on MA props. Hopefully I can find an APC that'll get me in the ballpark... then contact Zinger.
I really appreciate all of the information you've both provide! I apologize... as I feel I don't have a good enough understanding to fully use all of the information that you have provided.

Put a pair of these on it with the APC 15.75x13x3, and have a blast, the clearance ones are all sold out
http://www.scorpionsystem.com/catalo.../SII-4025-330/
The KV x voltage of your motors with the APC 13 pitch is a perfect setup. They are just rated at a pretty low amperage.
I agree with Chris, the MA are pretty inefficient, but that's what your setup is going to need to stay below that limit, and still spin the 15" 3 blade (16x10 cut down to 15).
I say put a couple APC E 2 blades on it and get some data, or switch motors

I just had a thought, not sure why I didn't think of this before...I must have filed it away as a "no go" in my head
I cut down a pair or APC three blades for my Scorpions, but my KV was 440 and they wouldn't unload enough as they were trying to rev to 8791. Yours might be okay as they try to rev to 6493.
I looked for the flight data for that flight, and I can't find it. I know those props don't unload very much in flight, so it might be worth a ground run to see what they pull at your RPMs. The smaller diameter will lower the amp draw, and you'll still the still have the RPM and 13 pitch you're looking for. I think they're around 14.5-14.9" now
If interested, I'll try to set something up to test them. I'll also look on the laptop I take to the field and see if I filed flight data in the wrong place
BTW, the 8S numbers you asked about are posted above. You can see you expend a lot of power spinning larger props at higher RPMs

These are the props we are talking about. APC 15.75x13x3, an APC cut down to 14, MA 16x10x3, G Sonic 16x12x3, and MA 14x9x3.
I'm not sure the relation between larger diameter, and RPM is making sense
Please review the spreadsheet, plug in your RPM in D-12, then plug in your pitch in D-11 to get the speed you want, then adjust the diameter of the prop in D-10, and you'll see how it affects the load (hp/watts) in F-15 and D-14. If you want to look a prop watts, plug in .9 in D-13 and read prop watts in D-15. divide by 746 to get prop HP.
The prop constant values are pretty important, but for comparisons sake, plug in 1.4 in D-9 for all.
Spending some time trying different combinations will give you a better understanding of how a given diameter, RPM, or pitch will effect performance, and loading

I'll give your spreadsheet a go today.

[QUOTE=sudstad;11872331]Our reasoning for the switch to go to 8s is we found eFlite 60's theoretically make a slight bit more power on 6s than eFlite 90's will. The left spreadsheet is for a 90, right for a 60. See below:

I'll give your spreadsheet a go today.[/QUOTE
It's not my spreadsheet, found it a while back, very helpfu to understand what is happening, and picking the right components. The Ecalc link I've posted a few times is also very helpful. Both of those will be very helpful, and allow you to try out different setups from your computor. In reality number are a little different, so it's not an exact, but a great tool to point you in the right direction.
Nothing is going to replace flying it to gather some flight data.
As far as APCs being to big on 8s. On 8s your are making more power per your chart, but the other side of that is you are trying to spin the prop faster. On 8s those motors we be trying to spin the same RPM as the high speed passes in the last video I posted. During those passes, my motors were pulling 2000 +/- 500 watts ( climb/ dive)
By the same token, between the 2-3 minute mark in the same video, the motors were spinning 5800 +/- 300 RPM, and the watts were in your range. Your motors on 6s will be tring to spin the props faster than that, so the watts/amps with be higher, probably in the 60 amp range.
My thinking is cutting the APC 15.75" down to 14-14.5 will likey put the amps right were they need to be for the RPM the motors want to spin using 6s. 8s will try to spin them faster, making amp way too high
Its worth the time to mess around With the spreadsheet and Ecalc
Sorry for typos.......

As I'd said before, I don't want to fly at full throttle just to keep it in the air. What did you mean by "cut down apc's too much on 8s"?

Here are the 6s vs 8s charts that I did. Both are for the eFlite 90's.
EDIT: eFlite says these motors are good for 13lb scale and 10lb 3D. At 18lbs, my hope is that I can use full throttle for takeoffs, then throttle-back for scale cruise.
I think I'll both of your advice and start with APC props. Start-out with a few size 2 blades to get a baseline, then try a few sizes of cut down 3 blade 15.75x13-3's.
A watt meter, tach and thermal gun are also on the list.
I have time... as I have one project ahead of the 38.

My Feedback: (3)
Just throwing this info into the mix...
The 60 motor has a higher KV but its physically smaller as well.
An out runner motor makes its power to do the work in two ways; diameter and magnet length. Both design features contribute to torque while KV is for RPM.
You can get a lot of power and high revs but only from very specific design features which these motors dont have so there are significant compromises.
Anyways, your best bet for the APC prop to work efficiently is to use 8S and your 90 motors. Use your data logging function in the ESC's and start a logbook of your progress so you can look back and compare. The data your projecting already confirms what we said a while back and jives with APC's RPM recommendations.
Also, its getting colder, at least here, so keep in mind as we get into winter that you need to preheat your packs to 90-100F before you fly. It saves you flight time otherwise the packs build up temp and deliver less power until they reach optimal operating temps. This can damage your packs as well so warm them up before you flog them in flight.

So I have this foolish idea I need to be talked out of before my wife finds out. I have a couple sets of plans and I was thinking of using them to draw up a foamie P-38 in the 90" range. That would be big enough to put in retracts and flaps. If that works out, I have a balsa framed foam covered 3d plane and my thought is that with formers, I could use a thin foam to skin it.
SO...comments/criticisms and suggestion(polite) are welcome.

question,......... is it possible to MAKE a p-38 from the foam ones ? as in make a set of patterns ? Molds I guess ? I want to buy one but none of them can promise to get spare parts. THIS is very aggravating to me.
