Model Tech P-47 engine?

I was thinking about putting a Super Tigre G-90 2 stroke on my Model Tech P-47 but I keep hearing about having to add as much as 10 oz of weight to the nose?? So what about the Super Tigre G2300 engine or is this way too much engine for this plane?

Well, if that's true, the G2300 would add that 10 oz.
Supposing you did that, substitute the 1.4 cubic inch displacement engine for the recommended 0.9 cubic inch two-stroke, and suppose you do get it to fit such that the appearance is acceptable to you (regarding engine sticking out the bottom, etc.) Would you be comfortable with having that much extra power? Are you accustomed to flying hot taildraggers?
Another good choice would be to substitute that 1.20 fourstroke option. Pull a big prop, a little slower RPM. The muffler's smaller, too, less stuff appearing out the side.
It's your call. My opinion, stick a fourstroke 1.20 in it, move the battery up to the front if necessary to balance, don't cut any more from the cowl than absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the advice Dave! Thats why I asked in here. I have never seen the G2300 engine except in the catalog. I se alot of messages about this is a 120 size plane not 60 and it needs alot of weight up front to balance out that is when I got the idea about the bigger engine. I have the G-90 on my 66" VF 300S and I love that engine! I like the sound of the four stroke. I think I can get a Magnum 120 for about the same price as a Saito 100 four stroke. Do you think it would be better to go with the Saito 100 Vs the 120 Magnum? From what I hear the Saito is alot better engine but would the Saito 100 four stroke pull it as well as the Magnum 120? I am not speed crazy I wanted this plane to look scale with enough engine hid under the cowl to pull it nice. At first I was going to go with the Magnum 91 four stroke but after hearing that this is more of a 120 size plane I got scared.

I have this plane and it is powered with a Saito .91fs. It required a fair bit of nose weight. Not exactly sure, probably around 8-9oz. I would need to remove the cowl to see for sure. However, with the .91, this plane performs very well.

Thanks for the info on the 91. If the 91 is enough engine for this plane then it would make me happy and the wife
. To go from 91 to 120 is like $100 price jump. I had to add alot of weight to my Extra 300 nose then I made a 3/4" spacer between the firewall and the engine mount and I am down to a little over 1 oz of lead on the firewall so if there is enough room in the cowl for the engine and the dummy radial and enough cowl maybe I can do the spacer.

Here is a photo of my Model Tech P-47 with an inverted Saito 91 and Slimline Pitts muffler. The inverted engine/muffler enables the cowl to be installed without cutting it up for the muffler to come out of the side. This also gives you more area for the nose art...

Looks good Jake! Well it looks like more people are running the 91 four stroke then I thought. I like the idea of not cutting up the cowl any more then I have to.

Thanks guys I will check out the Higley hub. I like the pitts muffler so I don't have to chop the cowl up but if I havent seen a pitts muffler for the Magnum 91 four stroke only the Saiko and OS engines.

You will be very happy with the Model Tech P-47! With an inverted Saito 91 and a Slimline Pitts muffler,mine flies great and the sound is awsome! Take a little extra time and install a Robart retractable tailwheel to help the look on those low fly-bys...

I have three Saito 100's and love all of them. They run inverted as well as when they are upright. They come with a 3 year warranty. You pay for what you get. I would recommend the Saito over the magnum.

Thanks Hellcat I have a Magnum 61 that runs great and also a OS 70 that runs great (after i got it adjusted) but have never owned a Saito and I want the engine that I put in this P-47 to be reliable so if the Saito is that much better and it runs good inverted then i will be happy to pay the extra $

the stg90 is at least as powerful as the saito 100. plus the g90 idles low easier- unless you are willing to use 30% fuel in the saito. they both take breakin. they both need good cooling air. the st carb is much easier to adjust. with a bisson pitts muffler the g90 runs really well, at least with an apc 14-6 prop (forget the master airscrew props).
so as you can probaby guess i recommend the g90 if you are deciding between it and the saito 100. but if you want stronger performance then try a bigger 2 stroke. maybe a 2 stroke 1.20 or something like that, or even a moki 1.35 if they still make it. that p-47 would fly awesome with a strong 1.20 2 stroke. but i wouldn't advise the st2300 without running it myself.
i have run both the stg90- i have 6 or 7 of them, and the saito 100. i took the saito out of my hangar 9 mustang and put a g90 in it and never looked back. the g90 clearly outperforms the saito in a warbird. if you had an aerobat the saito has good torque/thrust but for a warbird th g90 is the ticket.

Did you have any clearance problems with the engine muffler combination. I just purchased another saito 120 for my p-47. I am not sure about the slimline muffler having the clearance at the bulkhead. It is hard to get any definate info from slimline.

I also like the ST G90 I have one in my VF 66" Extra 300S that engine is nice! I wanted the four stroke sound for the war bird but to save cash I already have the G90 then i hear about all the weight to balance it out in the nose so I go back to thinking in terms of the 100 four strokes. Man I need another hobby or hit the lotto!

I had no problems at all installing the Saito 91 inverted in the Jug with the Slimline inverted Pitts muffler. With a 120...I don't know if there would be a problem or not. The onboard glow driver keeps me from having to start the engine with a ni-starter, which can sometimes be a chore on an inverted engine. One other thing that I did was to mount a fuel dot between the exhaust stacks of the muffler where it is out of sight.
As far as the debate about a 2 stroke or 4 stroke for this airplane, it just depends on your style of flying. If you want a lot of speed, you might want to go with a 2c or larger 4c. I Like to fly a scale airplane in a scale fashion, which is why I used the Saito 91. Most of the time I fly my Jug and 1/2 throttle and it does just fine. The Slimline inverted Pitts muffler kept the installation clean and as an added bonus, the sound it puts out is much more scale-like than the factory muffler.
I am sure that you will enjoy your P-47 with whatever engine that you choose. They just fly great!

Do you know the dimension from your prop flange to the rear part of the muffler. With the 120 Slimline says it will be 6 3/8 which exceeds the required dimension. I would rather go with this muffler or similar over stock.

one thing to consider- the saito 100 with original muffler weighs almost exactly the same as the st g90 with a bisson pitts style muffler. the cg stayed at exactly the same place, as close as i could measure.
as far as the sound the bisson pitts gives a more mellow tone to the g90 as it has a fairly large chamber on it- much larger than the mini chamber on the slimline pitts.

Is anyone running a saito 120 with the inverted 4-stroke slimline muffler on the modeltech p-47? If so, I would be interested in the fit and if modifications had to be done. There is a difference between this muffler and the inverted pitts.
