Looks really good. I have that same one but i will wait till i get back from Iraq. I dont want that big bird get'n dusty while i am gone.. Please keep updates going so i can see what i have in store for me.

Thanks for the comments. Hope you are safe and away from the bad guys. Tell your superiors that you need to get back home so can build your P-47! hehe.
I started working main wing tonight. One of the trailing edge balsa parts bacame warped but locking it into the ribs seemed to straighten it out. I had other die cut parts become warped once I removed them out of the box. I has not been that humid here in San Jose. I don't know what happened. Anyway I will keep posting pictures all the way to the end.

I have the 60 Size jug and some of the part became so warped I had to call Top Flight to get new ones " for free". I have looked over my giant jug and it all looks good so far so maybe here in Texas it wont warp much .

I too am building the Giant 47 from Topflite and am also using the g62. Did you use a cup mount for the engine or did you just use blocks to move it out. Did you take out the side thrust or did you leave it in as the kit was designed? Did you use the spring starter and lastly, will the carb be completely enclosed within the cowl?

I used a cup mount and I also built up a laminated 1" plywood block to bring the engine out far enough for the (Slimline) wrap around muffler to clear the firewall square. I also purchased the adaptor that enables you to hook up the linkage directly to the carb. The adaptor basically rotates the carb 90 degrees. It looks like the carb is going to clear the cowl however the muffler is barely going to make it by about a 1/4". Hopefully it doesn't melt the plastic. I was going to eventually get a fiberglass cowl if I don't crash the plane on the first flight. hehe
I left the side thrust in. One guy made it 0 degrees and said it flew with no problems. Most guys have left the side thrust in as far as I can tell. It looks funny though.
I do not have the spring starter. But I was considering getting an on board electric starter. This is my first gasser and my first retract plane. Hopefully the engine starts easily with flipping.
I will post more pictures of the engine during hookup and cowl construction.

I just got the wings framed up. Number 2 - 4 ribs were not perfect, so they had to be trued up. Also make sure that the notches in all the ribs allow the upper and lower spars to fit flush or you might have some trouble later.
The forward and aft plywood braces must be correctly installed so that they are flush with the first rib or the rest of the parts won't fit without adjustment. Step 12 on page 32 mentions that you should remove any excess epoxy so that the spar joiner will fit. This is an understatement. Make sure that you take extra time to clean the epoxy well. I also had to sand the joiner brace quite a bit as well to get it to fit. Make sure that you retain the dihedral in the joiner as well.
I just got threw sheeting the forward section of the wings. More pictures to come. When sheeting you must support the center front area of the LE underneath or you will get a small dip when the glue dries. I used shot bags to weight the sheeting down while the glue dried.

I also started building this kit in May this year but unfortunately I stopped in the end of august.

well i'm glad too see so many people building this plane. I'm 16 and when my 3-WEEK christmas vacation starts i'm going to start building, my christmas gifts will be the retracts and the retract support system for the plane. I am also considering the g-62 for this plane. are any of you planning to fiberglass your plane. I highly recomend the fiberglass cowling from stans fibertech. his glasswork is of outstanding quaality. I have already picked out my trim scheme as lt. Don Strait "jersey Jerk" it's a razorback version, olive drab top and the grey bottom.

well i went ahead and started the tail feathers today, i got both done without all the sheeting, Their drying right now 2morrow i hope to get them finished. I got my main retracts friday and have been playing with them ever since their so cool. I hope to hear some progress of your build soon.

More work done on the top sheeting process. I had to take a straight edge and cut the trailing edge where the flap inner trailing edge piece goes. Plus I accidentally glued the the 1x20" plywood strips to 3/32 balsa instead of 1/16 balsa a per instructions. Had to do a ton of sanding to make it thin enough to be flush with the top sheeting. After all this the work came out ok. I also drilled the hole for the wing mount bolts.

Here are some more pictures. Make sure to really get the beveled edge of the trailing edges of the flap and aileron balsa correct so that they will fit with the bottom pieces later. Draw the line on the flaps and ailerons as shown on the plans then sand to the line. The very back trailing edges get pretty thin. But it comes out ok. I went ahead and painted the wheel wells as per instructions. Here is one retract. The new 622's really go up high in the wing. I had to use a 4" wheel. I'm going to try moving up to a 4.5" later. I love working on the hardware parts of these projects. I purchased the cam upgrade from Sierra as from the advice of others on RCU.

ADSala Before you seet that wing area go to the retract wing ribs and reenforce the ribs both infront and beind the spar. Trust me you will wish you did this before you sheet the wing. If you have a rough landing this is the first thing that will come out of the wing. And I only hit a ground squrill hole in our field.

Thanks, and I don't take your advice lightly. I was planning on beefing up the landing gear supports. However, it seems that a ground squirl hole would probably take out a landing gear no matter how good the support! hehe I'm very lucky to have a paved runway. But I pay for it. My club dues are $100 a year. Then the AMA is $58 this year. Ouch!

I think I'm going to glass it. Mainly because I don't want dents and that I've have covered plenty of planes over time. I may use the polyurethane technique. Once glassed I will paint it some aluminum scheme. I plan on giving it some detail but not too crazy. I am going to install nav lights though and I got the cockpit kit. What are you going to do? This kit is a real undertaking. I'm surprised that a kid your age is taking it on. Keep me posted with your progress.

I spent a few nights getting the final things done before sheeting the bottom. Air hoses, servo wires and nav light wire, hinge blocks. I used a hot glue gun to attach the wires and air hoses to the ribs.
I strengthened up the landing gear supports with triangle stock and fillets made with epoxy mixed with milled fiberglass. I also installed the block for the fake guns to mount into. I put together the wing jigs and lined them with felt.
Now on to the task of aligning the wing skins and gluing them on. Hopefully we can get to some more interesting stuff soon.
