Gabreski P-47 reference material
I'm putting together my documentation package for this project. Not finding very many color photos of Gabreski's P-47. Just bits and pieces. Anybody have any info that might save some time? Google searching is taking a long time. Need this before I get too far ahead of myself on construction.

RE: Gabreski P-47 reference material
Edwin,
Warpaint special No 1 covers the P-47. Inside it shows Gabreskis paint scheme. Only from the port side though. Nice thing it does have is the kill mark panel which shows the aircraft type above the kill mark. This book is published in the UK by Hill Park Books LTD. The vertical stripes on the fuse only show the white. Not sure if this is correct. I have an old b&w photo that looks like the black vertical stripes are there. WP #1 also shows an incorrect prop. The photo I have clearly shows a Hamilton Std prop. The photo also shows the wheels had covers and there were no wing pylons.
Hope this helps

you could look in his autobiography - it's called "Gabby- a fighter pilot's life". i have a copy. it has color plates in the back which show several of his planes. do you have a particular one that you are modeling? these plates show 5 different p-47s that he flew, 4 razorbacks and one bubble canopy. he also flew spitfires and of course later on he flew f-86s.

I'm doing the bubble top. Almost every P-47 I've seen in this area was done as a razorback. Dont want to do that again. I like the 56th FG scheme cause it was the only camo bubble tops in the European front. Really like the looks. I've seen those pictures. I'm looking for pictures of the real aircraft, not models, paintings or drawings. This will be for my documentation package for the judges. Will try to hit the bookstore today to see if there is anything there. I was trying to find something online right now so I wouldnt be held up when I get to the details.

Edwin, I would advise against using color photographs for your Docs. Typically they lead to lower static scores. What you do need is the 3 view outlines and then pictures or B&W Photos showing the markings and paint along with a description of the colors. Then you can use FTE's color chips or those from the FS 595 as proof of color. You don't need original color photos (which were usually poor) to demonstrate your scheme. Hope this helps.BobH.

Bob,
Thats actually good to hear. This will be my first contest entry so I plan on doing sport scale to get a feel for the process. Should be fun from what I've observed. I have Tiano's color chip book and have used it in the past. This simplifies things quite a bit. I have enough 3-views and color drawings to work from and a few b&w photos which sounds like it ought to do it. At this point I've stopped work on the Thunderbolt to finish a BT corsair I got at a swapmeet. Needed a lot of work to bring up to my stds. Should be able to maiden in Sept or so.
Next time I'll use Bryan Taylor, Don Smith, or Ziroli plans to build from. Its getting to be a bit of work to fix the outlines in the tail feathers on this TF kit. Should I bother with a detailed cockpit?

Edwin, you can detail the cockpit if you like and you'll get a lot of satisfaction from it but it's not judged at all. You get no points for interiors but they can influence the judges over all impressions if you understand my meaning. TF kits are scale to a point but not 100% accurate. Since you have picked out the plane you intend to model make sure that your plane matches that plane as best you can; that includes the outline. The Kalamazoo air museum has their P-47 Bubble finished in Gabby's scheme. If you wanted you may look for some examples of that plane and pattern yours after that one since it's still flying. I can't speak to the authenticity of their paint colors but I did match the plane colors to the FS 595 chips. They were OD and Grey, the standard USAA colors used in the ETO during the war. Some of the units used British colors to repaint their planes and as such the colors would be matched to the RAF colors of the day. Just make sure your Docs state the colors used and you have the correct examples. Hope that helps.
