Default New Hangar 9 .60 size P-40E ARF

H9 is coming out with a new .60 size P-40E Warhawk ARF in Flying Tiger camouflage. Check it out: [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByCategory/Product/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN2850]H9 P-40E[/link]

It's due in early March. I hope this plane doesn't have any firewall problems like their previous planes.

The ad says "Durable preinstalled metal retracts rotate 90 degrees". Durable eh?

Yea Richard is there such a thing? P-40 is cool but rotating retracts are a sore subject for me. By the way Richard how are the CJ holding up in your Hellcat? I have the same one but put Robarts in which were a big mistake. Won't buy that one again. If H9 uses the same ones that are in the Corsair they can just leave them out and knock off the $5 they are worth. Thanks for the look though it looks nice.

They say that they are metal retracts which are different than the ones in the Corsair wonder if they finally listened.

CJ retracts are holding up fine in my Hellcat. The pop rivets in the scissor links loosened up a bit, so I will replace all of them with bolts and low profile lock nuts.

The first thing I'll do to the H9 P-40 is replace the stock retracts with a set of air retracts. The second thing is reinforce the firewall, of course.

Sierra,s retracts are the best I have ever seen,It would be a great fit,
if the strut length is correct.

Aren't the prices of 'air' retracts getting a bit out of hand? TF's new Arrow II sells for ~$230, retracts cost $304!

Beauty must be in the eye of the beholder on this one. The mustangs and the corsair looked good but personally I think that thing is fugly. Maybe if it's stripped and done in another scheme, it just looks like a toy. Where's that post with the cox circle jerker ?

Sorry......

Also, this thing looks too shiny since it's covered in UltraCote. Hopefully the CMP version will look better.

A got an update from Raiden tech on the CMP p40 and I was somewhat disappointed . No pictures but they said it would be silver ????? I question why not olive drap or cameo but I got silver ???? We can only hope that it has scale lines and outline .

Personally I think the H9 looks great , but I tweek every arf I get anyway . You can lighty sand the cameo , add rivits and panel lines and flat spray the plane . If your really brave split flaps are not that difficult compared to the H9 corsair . Unfortunitly I have a weak spot for the P40 , so here gose another one !!!

[8D] Why is everyone concerned with the firewall on these planes? I have built four P-51's and have seen no firewall problems! The first one I sold , the next one was a Miss "A" and I forgot to plug in the aileron servo wires, which resulted in hard contact with the ground . The third is converted to a "B" model still going strong with a Saito 100 under the cowl. The fourth is another Miss "A" and I see no problem with this one. The only thing I do is add some thin Ca to the wood where the firewall and sides meet, yes there is a week spot in the nose and one could add some doublers to the inside of the fuselage. Fly them like a real P-51 and not like a 3D Extra or Cap and you will not have any problems. And land soft and slow!

bearcatf8,

You don't range check your radio before flying?! How did you miss not hooking up your aileron connection? Forget the loss of the plane, Bud, we're talking safety here!

Okay, I'm off my soapbox. The firewall thing was an occurance on some of the early P-51's but continues to be a hazard on the H-9 Corsairs. Seems as though a number of them are coming loose from the fuselage and, in some cases, parting company with the aircraft altogether. Imagine jazzing your throttle in the pit area after starting your engine and the firewall comes out with a prop turning many thousands of RPM's. THAT, my friends, is why we check and adjust our engines from BEHIND the propeller.

Let's just hope the gear is better on the P-40 than their previous offerings. The spaghetti they called gear legs on my Mustang was embarrassing as the plane waddled like a duck on the runway. I swore that was my last ARF. But, hey, that's just me.

What engine size for the CMP P40? There has been one sold "downunder" for a few months now by CM-PRO, which is the name CMP go by down here.
It's for a .70 4 stroke, .46 2 stroke.
All silver (but with shark mouth decals) and FIXED undercarriage. Wonder if it's the same model you guys are talking about?

If you read the ad (from the link in the original post), it states that it is finished like Rudy Frasca's (spelling?), which is a current flying restored full scale. Like many current flying restored full scales, it is finished with glossy paint, rather than flat. Probably easier to maintain. Also, Rudy's is a later model ("C" or later), having the larger radiator/ chin than the "B" models which were used predominately in the China/ Flying Tigers campaign. Thus, since the Hanger 9 version is modeled after Rudy's, it is in fact pretty authentic.
And I'm not even a P-40 fanantic. I have seen Rudy's full scale several times at air shows, usually Oshkosh.
As for all the compalining about this aircraft befeore anyone has even seen it: LOOK AT THE PRICE! What do you expect for $260: perfection? Retracts as good as CJs'?

I'm not complaining about the price, I just don't like it. It's probably a nicely built plane, just not my cup of tea old chap......

It's probably cos I'm not much of a P-40 fan, I like my Ziroli but I got the kit w/glass fuse, sachs 4.2 and full robarts for $600. Can't turn that down.It does fly nice !

I did mine without teeth, so many of em' have it......

BTW, my nose art is not incorrect, the profile is, a photo of the real plane shows the character's suit to match the spinner which is red with black hat and outline. The biggets trouble I had was the character's face. You cannot make it out nor are there any further photos. I decided to take my own initiative and made the chap a skeleton. Kinda fitting for plane from a bygone time.

Woody , the p40 that your talking was discontinued in the states .It was the smaller silver version .I spoke to CMP about a month ago and they siad that after the Chinese new year they would get back on execution of the new 72"p40 and a 45 size version .They stated it would be closer to scale like there other ww2 .
