Default TF P-40E in Action

I finally got my buddy to recode some videos of my TF P-40E today with me on the stick.

Some specs:

* Wingspan: 64 inches
* Dry Weight: 12 lbs 0.4 oz
* Engine: YS 110FZ four stroke
* Fuel: Powermaster YS 20/20
* Prop: Master Airscrew K-Series 15x8 @ 9500 rpm
* Retracts: Robart 615's with 3/8" Robart RoboStruts (yes, Robart 615's)
* Wheels: Robart 4" Diamond Tread

Flying Conditions:

* Ambient Temperature: 36°F
* Wind: negligible

Here are the videos (crank up the volume):

Edit: added two more videos

Thanks. I just uploaded the second take off, which turned out to be better than the first one. I also updated the high speed pass. The movies were recorded with Sony Digital8 camcorder onto a mini tape. I then plugged the audio/video cable from the camcorder to a video capture board in my computer, played back the movies on the camcorder, and the capture board recorded the movies onto the hard drive.

Ahhh! That warms the heart good. Great composition on those videos. Is it balanced per plans? I will be doing a maiden on one probably in spring for a former student. His is fixed gear and weighs in about 11.5 lbs. Running a saito 120.

Edwin, the plane is balanced per plans. Even with the YS 110 and aluminum motor mounts, I still had to add 2 oz of lead to the nose to get the plane to balance. I have my fuel tank just slightly ahead of the CG and not way up front behind the firewall. This allows the model stay trimmed through the entire flight as fuel is being consumed. The plane is a sweet flyer and lands like a p-cat. By the way, the plane has authentic recessed panel lines and hundreds of both raised and flushed rivets.

Thanks. This is my YS 110 #5. The ambient temperature was only a few degrees above freezing, so I ran it way rich, as evident by the smoke trail in the videos. However, it performed flawlessly without a single hiccup. Gotta love a YS in a warbird.

So as per plans, with wheels down?

Always balance the plane with the wheels up. Otherwise, the plane will be tail heavy when the wheels are brought back into the wheel wells. Warbirds do not really like to be tail heavy.

I knew that, it's just the instructions say with wheels down (that's not meant to sound rude or aggressive). I read in another topic that someone balanced with wheels up and it was very very nose heavy and crashed. I'm about to build one myself and this plane certainly is an inspiration along with Peter_oz's P-40 (rip). Anyone got any good shots of theirs?

My CG is exactly at 3-1/4" when the wheels are up. The plane feels much better in the air when balanced with the wheels up than with the wheels down. Keep in mind that my fuel tank is on or very close to the CG. I suppose if you have your fuel tank way up front, then it might be better to balance the plane with the wheels down.

Hi Richard

Great video's very scale take off's and Landings. I don't know what it is but landing a plane has always been my favorite part of fling. I was watching the landing video and I notice that when the wheels touched down the tail seem to raise up did you put down elevator into it to make the wheels stick and to produce roll out? Also congrats! on becoming the RCwarbird arf moderator. Doug

Doug, I usually let the tail settle down by itself. Sometimes I gradually feed in up elevator to keep the tail down right after the mains touch down.

Hey Peter, you were complaining about me taxiing with the flaps down on my VQ P-40 landings, so I pulled up the flaps before I taxied the plane back just for you

Richard,
I've been dying to build this P40, but I keep getting discouraged when reading horror stories about it's takeoff and landing capabilities. Watching your video gives me some courage to try it! I love P-40's, and even though the other TF kits may be easier to handle I'm still thinking about trying it. My local HS has one on the shelf just waiting for me to take it home, and I have an OS 120 w/pump without a home!

Maybe I'll just keep replaying your vids until I work up the courage!

Steve

Steve, I think you will do just fine. This P-40 is one of the easy warbirds to take off and land. The OS 120 pumper will fit completely inside the cowl. In fact, the cowl is big and long enough to house a 25cc gas engine. The most important thing about taking off is letting the tail up and let the plane reaches flying speed before attempting to lift it off the ground. I would suggest getting a flight simulator if you don't already have one and practice practice practice.

Thanks for the encouragement Richard. I've flown the P-40 on the flight simulators and I've had no problems. I've got a GP GEE BEE arf, and i've flown it a few times with only one bad landing, but that didn't do any damage. I've read the threads on Warbirds.com, and the P-40 is pretty much considered the toughest of the TF planes to take off and land. I guess I'll just have to judge for myself!

Thanks, Steve

Steve, perhaps you should try the new H9 P-40E when it comes out in the Spring first before attempting to tackle the TF P-40E. The H9 P-40E is roughly the same size as the TF, but with much lighter wing loading.

Do you ever have trouble with your warbird noising over when taking off on grass?

I rarely have trouble with my warbirds nosing over when taking off on grass. It did happen once or twice in the past, but I don't make a habit out of it. It's all about throttle/elevator/rudder management.

Here are some examples of my take off on grass:

Steve, actually, the VQ P-40 might provide you with better practice since it's not too light and has split flaps.

The videos are either in MPEG or WMV format, so you will need either QuickTime or Windows Media Player to play them.
